Shadwell Heads Day 1 Action at Goffs Autumn

A quartet of homebred yearlings offered by Shadwell Estate's Derrinstown Stud led the way during the initial session of the Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale in Kildare Paddocks Tuesday. Responsible for all four yearlings on Day 1 of the two-day sale to top the six-figure mark, Derrinstown's roster was led by Lot 370, a colt by Dark Angel (Ire), who realized a €180,000 online bid from Adam Driver. Bred by Shadwell Estate Co., the Jan. 25 foal is the first foal out of Moghamarah (GB) (Dawn Approach), who finished second or better in all three career starts at two, including an impressive win at Gowran Park. Out of 2008 Champion juvenile filly in Ireland Shimah (Storm Cat), a listed winner and Group 1 placed from only four career starts, Moghamarah, who is also represented by a filly foal by Blue Point (Ire) and is currently in foal to Tamayuz, will sell later this month at the Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale.

In addition to signing for the day's top priced offering, Driver went to €155,000 for lot 348, a filly by Dark Angel. Produced by GSW and MG1SP Maqaasid (GB) (Green Desert), the Shadwell-bred filly is from the family of G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation winner Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway). Maqaasid is also slated to sell at Goffs November.

Leading the fillies Tuesday, Lot 208 realized a €170,000 final bid from John Kilbride's Kilbride Equine. Also offered on behalf of Shadwell, the daughter of Shamardal is out of Elshaadin (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}), who is also responsible for MGSP Khaloosy (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). A half-sister to European champion 3-year-old (at 9.5-11f) Nathaniel (Ire) and Playful Act (Ire), 2004 English champion 2-year-old filly in addition to Group 1 winner Great Heavens, Elshaadin will be offered in foal to Too Darn Hot at the Tattersalls December Mares sale.

Rounding out Tuesday's top yearlings, lot 437, a colt by Teofilo (Ire), sold to Kerr & Co for €140,000. The Shadwell-bred is out of Group 3 scorer Rawaaq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who is also scheduled to sell in foal to Awtaad at Goffs November. This represents the extended family of European champion miler and sire Bahri.

At the conclusion of Day 1, turnover rose significantly to €3,151,500 with 213 sold (clearance rate 91%), well over 2020 figures when 102 head sold for €688,100 (clearance rate 61%) after the sale was conducted online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, average also rose to €14,796 from €6,746, while median increased to €8,000 from €4,200 in 2020.

The second and final session of the Goffs Autumn sale begins Wednesday at 10a.m. (local time).

‘Like A Lioness’: Defending Turf Champion Tarnawa Ready For ‘Bigger Challenge’ At Del Mar

Last year's Breeders' Cup Turf winner Tarnawa has long been penciled in for this year's edition of the 1 1/2-mile race at Del Mar, veteran Irish trainer Dermot Weld revealed during an NTRA media teleconference on Wednesday, shortly after pre-entries for this year's world championships were released. Weld believes the Aga Khan's 5-year-old daughter of Shamardal is up to the challenge, despite questions about how she might handle the firm ground “Where the Turf Meets the Surf.”

“I think this is what makes a really true champion, if they can go and defend their crown over different surfaces a year apart,” Weld said. “This will be a bigger challenge than last year for her, due to the firmer ground. Equally, she is a really, really good racemare who responds to each challenge she gets.”

Tarnawa is pre-entered in both the Turf and the Filly & Mare Turf, but Weld said she would most likely run against males to defend her title in the Turf.

In order to facilitate her return trip to the United States, Tarnawa had a later-than-normal start to her 2021 campaign. She commenced with a win in the Group 3 Ballyroan Stakes at Leopardstown on Aug. 5, and was subsequently beaten just three-quarters of a length by St. Mark's Basilica in the G1 Irish Champion Stakes on Sept. 11. In her third start this year, the mare put in a valiant effort to fall just shy of a win in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

“She fought like a lioness, and unfortunately we just came up short and the ground was extremely testing,” said Weld. “She's a very brave filly, very tough, very genuine. She gives 110 percent every time she runs. When she came back from Paris she was tired for about a week, so we just took it easy with her… I've been very happy with her work for the past week.”

Weld, the 21-time champion trainer in Ireland, knows what it takes to win races internationally. A qualified veterinarian, Weld took over his father's yard (Charlie Weld) at the age of 24 after gaining early experience on the backstretch of Belmont Park. He has since trained top-level winners on four continents, and he remains the only European trainer to win a leg of the American Triple Crown: the 1990 Belmont Stakes with the aptly-named Go And Go.

A year later, Weld sent raiders to Hong Kong and saddled Additional Risk to win the International Hong Kong Mile. In 1993, Weld became the first European trainer to send out a winner in Australia's Melbourne Cup when Vintage Crop captured the “race that stops a nation.” He won a second Melbourne Cup with Media Puzzle in 2002, and has won a total of 10 stakes races in the United States.

Now 73, Weld is excited to travel to Del Mar for this year's Breeders' Cup. Due to pandemic restrictions he was unable to attend the races at Keeneland in 2020, so Weld had to celebrate the first Breeders' Cup win of his career from afar. This year, Weld hopes to see Tarnawa rise to the challenge at Del Mar in person.

“I appreciate that she handled what we would call good to firm ground in Kentucky, whereas I am well aware that what we face is going to be a lot quicker and is a concern,” Weld said. “I actually think she could be a slightly better mare this year. She's developed every year, and she's actually training a couple of kilos heavier than last year… She's a very professional racehorse, with such a great constitution.”

Tarnawa will be ridden by Colin Keane in the Turf, reuniting her with the jockey who piloted her to victory at Keeneland. Keane rode Tarnawa for her first two starts this year, but Christophe Soumillon was up for the Arc. Weld explained that Soumillon is the Aga Khan's retained rider in France, whereas Keane rides most of the horses in Ireland.

“(Keane) did win on her last year, and he gave her a perfect ride in the Irish Champion Stakes,” Weld said.

Weld also revealed that 2021 will be Tarnawa's final season of racing. The mare is pre-entered in the Hong Kong International Races on Dec. 12, but whether or not she makes that trip will be dependent on how she runs in the Breeders' Cup.

Victor Ludorum Retired To Logis

Victor Ludorum (GB) (Shamardal-Antiquities {GB}, by Kaldounevees {Fr}), an unbeaten Group 1-winning 2-year-old who trained on to be a Classic winner at three for Godolphin, has been retired from racing and will stand at Haras du Logis in Normandy next year. A fee will be announced at a later date.

Sam Bullard, Darley's director of stallions, said, “Victor Ludorum was a great credit to the Godolphin team–a homebred Classic winner who was exceptional at two. We're delighted to be standing him in France, scene of all his races. He hails from a particularly exceptional stallion-making family and has every chance of being a great stallion son of Shamardal.”

Victor Ludorum started three times at two in the space of five weeks for trainer Andre Fabre and won all three outings culminating in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. He trained on to take the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains of 2020 and was third behind Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club. He picked up another pattern-race win over a mile this season when taking the G3 Prix Messidor at Chantilly, and was third behind the ascendant Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the G1 Prix du Moulin.

By Darley's own highly successful sire Shamardal, Victor Ludorum is inbred 3×3 to the excellent producer Helen Street (GB) (Troy {GB}), best known as the dam of Street Cry (Ire). Useful young sire Territories (Ire) also appears on the page.

Haras du Logis's Julian Ince said, “I'm thrilled that Darley is entrusting such a wonderful horse to the Haras du Logis. And, of course, it's tremendous for the French breeding community. Bred by Godolphin and masterfully trained by Andre Fabre, Victor Ludorum has been a wonderful horse to watch. We've all been so excited by him. A great looking colt, with a fantastic pedigree, and such a talent Unbeaten at two and brilliant in the Poule d'Essai–that's exactly what his sire Shamardal achieved, and we'll be hoping Victor Ludorum will be just as successful at stud.”

Tarnawa A ‘Definite Possibility’ To Defend Her Title In Breeders’ Cup Turf

Last year's Breeders' Cup Turf winner Tarnawa may return stateside to defend her title at Del Mar in November, reports the Racing Post. The 5-year-old Shamardal mare ran most recently in Sunday's Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, and was defeated just three-quarters of a length by 72-1 longshot Torquator Tasso over heavy ground at Longchamp.

In her other two starts this season, Tarnawa won the Group 3 Ballyroan Stakes and ran second to St Mark's Basilica in the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes.

Trainer Dermot Weld said there was a “definite possibility” Tarnawa will make her next start in the Breeders' Cup Turf, racing against males again.

“She tried hard and we've got no excuses but you saw the stamina of Tarnawa, not the speed, which was nullified on the testing ground,” Weld explained. “If we hadn't had so much rain on Saturday night, we'd have won.”
