MGSW and Classic Placed Shaman to Yeomanstown Stud

MGSW and Classic-placed Shaman (Ire) (Shamardal-Only Green {Ire} by Green Desert) will stand at Yeomanstown Stud in 2021. The Wertheimer et Frere homebred’s fee will be announced at a later date.

“He is a great looking son of the mighty Shamardal from one of the best pedigree’s around, add to that his impressive race record Shaman is a huge addition to us and should prove popular to breeders from both Ireland and abroad,” said Yeomanstown’s David O’Callaghan. “We are delighted to have Wertheimer Et Frère retain a share in Shaman and look forward to their support.”

Trained by Carlos Laffon-Parias, the debut winner was third in the G3 Prix des Chenes as a juvenile, before winning the Listed Prix Omnium II in his first start at three. Successful in the G3 Prix la Force, the chestnut ran second in the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains. Later that term he was also second in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois and ended his sophomore year with a third in the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein. At four the son of French MSW & GSP Only Green added the G2 Prix d’Harcourt to his win column and was also third in the G1 Prix Ganay. His record stands at 16-5-3-3 and $687,788 in earnings.

Shaman is a half-brother to French SW Green Sweet (Smart Strike), as well as the dam of Group 3 placed My Kurkum (GB) (Dariyan {Fr}). His dam is a half-sister to European highweight and MG1SW Occupandiste (Ire) (Kaldoun {Fr}), herself responsible for MGISW Mondialiste (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), GSW & MG1SP Impressionnante (GB) (Danehill) and the latter’s G1 Prix du Jockey Club-winning son and young sire Intello (Ger) (Galileo {Ire}). This is the extended family of Irish highweight and Classic winner Mehthaaf (Nureyev), as well as European highweights and Group 1 winners Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) and G1 July Cup hero Elnadim (Danzig). Shaman’s fourth dam is the high class blue hen Fall Aspen (Pretense).

Undefeated In 2020, Filly Tarnawa To Take On The Boys In Breeders’ Cup Turf

A winner of all three of her starts in 2020, 4-year-old Tarnawa is expected to join the field for next Saturday's Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland. According to racingpost.com, the Shamardal filly is generally rated the 3-1 co-second favorite behind Magical (5-2) for the 1 1/2-mile contest.

She could provide trainer Dermot Weld with his first Breeders' Cup victory in the Turf. Tarnawa is cross-entered in the Filly & Mare Turf, but Weld expects to run the dual Group 1 winner against males instead. Christophe Soumillon will have the mount.

“I think it's pretty certain she'll go for the Breeders' Cup Turf,” Weld told racingpost.com. “It's a tight, turning track with a short straight and the draw is very important in the Filly & Mare Turf, so if you're unlucky enough to get a bad draw it doesn't help your chances. You've got a better chance of overcoming that in the Breeders' Cup Turf.”

This season, Tarnawa has put together wins in the G3 Give Thanks Stakes on Aug. 8, the G1 Prix Vermeille on Sept. 13, and the G1 Prix de l'Opera on Oct. 4. A homebred for the Aga Khan, Tarnawa's career record stands at seven wins from 13 starts.

Other horses pre-entered in the Breeders' Cup Turf include: Arklow, Channel Maker, Donjah, Lord North, Magical, Mean Mary, Mehdaayih, Mogul, Red King, Tarnawa, and United.

Tarnawa on Song for Breeders’ Cup

MG1SW Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal) is in good form heading toward a start in the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland on Nov. 7. The 4-year-old filly who races in the colours of His Highness The Aga Khan is cross entered in both the GI Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf and the GI Maker’s Mark Filly & Mare Turf. Christophe Soumillon has the ride. The chestnut has won all three starts this year beginning in the G3 Give Thanks S. at Cork on Aug. 8. She later added the Sept. 13 G1 Qatar Prix Vermeille and the Oct. 4 G1 Prix de l’Opera Longines, both at ParisLongchamp.

“I’ve been delighted with Tarnawa,” said trainer Dermot Weld. “We purposefully planned an autumn campaign with her. She won the Prix Vermeille very nicely and went back and won the Prix de l’Opera and has progressed from those two Group 1 wins. We’ve kept her on the same training schedule. She’s a very straightforward filly to train. She did a nice bit of sharp work last week and I was very happy with the way she went.

“It’s pretty certain that she’ll go to the Turf. It’s a pretty tight track with a short straight and there will likely be a bigger field in the Filly & Mare race, so the chance of getting a bad draw increases. Christophe Soumillon will definitely ride her. I thought he gave her two perfect rides when she won her two Group 1s and you don’t break a winning combination.”

Earthlight Retired To Kildangan

Godolphin’s dual Group 1-winning juvenile Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal-Winters Moon {Ire}, by New Approach {Ire}) has been retired from racing and will stand at Kildangan Stud in 2021.

Bred by Godolphin out of its G1 Fillies’ Mile third Winters Moon-a half-sister to two Group 1 winners–Earthlight went unbeaten in five starts last year at two for trainer Andre Fabre. He took the G3 Prix de Cabourg at third asking before reeling off victories in the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S., the latter over subsequent G1 Commonwealth Cup victor Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire}) and was named France’s champion 2-year-old.

Earthlight won two of his four starts this year at three-the G3 Prix du Pin and Listed Prix Kistena over seven and six furlongs-and bows out after finishing second to One Master (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the G1 Prix de la Foret on Oct. 4.

Sam Bullard, Darley’s director of stallions, said, “We are delighted to be able to offer Earthlight to breeders in Ireland next year. During his unbeaten juvenile campaign, Earthlight’s victories in the G1 Darley Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park were truly outstanding and his champion status at the end of that year was very well deserved.

“The loss of Shamardal in April left a big hole in the roster, but we are confident that his sons, Earthlight and Blue Point, will continue his legacy admirably in Ireland.”
