Dark Angel’s Mostabshir A New TDN Rising Star

Shadwell already knew they had a special broodmare in Handassa (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) before Friday, but the dam of Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Mostahdaf (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) is looking like a genuine goldmine after her 3-year-old colt Mostabshir (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) seized his TDN Rising Star badge at York. Pitched tellingly by John and Thady Gosden into the G3 Craven S. off the back of an impressive debut win at Kempton in November, the grey had finished failed to light any fires when fifth in Newmarket's leading Guineas trial.

Duly sent back to novice company for this latest of Darley's boosted series, the homebred had a penalty and that may have been why he was abandoned by Jim Crowley in favour of the William Haggas-trained Kathab (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), runner-up in Newmarket's Wood Ditton that had gained extra gravitas after Thursday's Dante. Soon in front as William Buick revived his old Gosden link, the 3-1 second favourite was gradually worked over to the rail and kicked into the clear two out. At the line, there was a yawning five-length gap to the fellow Gosden runner Ziryab (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who denied Kathab the runner's-up spot by a short head.

“I'm impressed–he has a lovely nature and had pricked ears in front,” Buick said. “I loved the way he quickened and he hit the line strong. He probably needs decent ground–at the Craven meeting it was sticky.”

Given the failure to shape like a pattern-race performer in the Craven, John Gosden had contemplated the handicap route at Royal Ascot but could be in for a change of direction now. “He's like a lot of ours–the grass gallops were closed in Newmarket, so they had to train on the all-weather and then when they went to the races they ran in a bog and didn't like it,” he explained. “This was the first summer ground we've had this year and it's a different result. What was nice was that William said he quickened twice, and when they do that you've got to take note.”

“He was giving six pounds to the opposition, so it was a decent performance but we're in a complete muddle now as we don't know if we'll go to the Britannia or the handicapper will make it impossible–the other option is to go in at the deep end,” Gosden Sr added. “What he's shown today is that on genuine summer ground he's a decent horse.”

Shadwell's racing manager Angus Gold added, “I'm delighted to see him quicken like that, I didn't expect it. He looked a galloper when he won at Kempton and it didn't work out for him in the Craven for whatever reason–course, ground, needed the run, whatever. You'd love to run him in a listed race somewhere and if that went well then go St James's Palace, but there isn't the time to do it. We ran in the Craven to see if he was a Guineas horse, it fell in a hole so we thought we'd come back down to bring him back up. To do that with a penalty in that style–I was surprised to see the speed.”

 

Pedigree Note

Handassa, who proved a bargain 100,000gns purchase by Shadwell from Red House Stud at the 2009 Book 1 Sale, went on to be successful in the Listed Garnet S. over a mile having been tried in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas. Nazeef was her third foal and second runner, and while the homebred took a little while to build into a top-level performer, when she did so it came in style as she racked up a trio of big-race successes in the G2 Duke Of Cambridge S., G1 Falmouth S. and G1 Sun Chariot S. Handassa's fifth foal was Mostahdaf, who stayed further and has so far brought up a sequence of wins in the G3 September S., G3 Gordon Richards S. and G3 Darley S. in his native Britain and this year's G3 Altanfeethi Neom Turf Cup.

A half-sister to the GII San Gabriel S. winner and GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile-placed Desert Stone (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), Handassa is a granddaughter of Star (GB) (Most Welcome {GB}) who gained the rare distinction of producing a pair of group 1-winning sprinters in Pastoral Pursuits (GB) and Goodricke (GB) from matings with Bahamian Bounty (GB). Handassa's next offering is the 2-year-old colt Mutaawid (GB), a full-brother to Mostahdaf, while she also has a yearling colt by Kingman (GB).

Tylicki Dreaming Of Classic Glory For Fleetfoot Alongside Mentor Bolger

Freddy Tylicki, part-owner of the Jim Bolger-trained Fleetfoot (Ire), who advertised his Classic credentials with a gritty success at Leopardstown on Wednesday, has spoken glowingly about the Teofilo (Ire) colt's claims of major honours this season. 

Fleetfoot was placed on all three of his starts at two, bumping into some smart colts each time, including subsequent G1 National S. hero Al Riffa (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). 

But the Shadwell-bred colt made no mistake on his seasonal return, battling best to land the 1m maiden as a 7-4 favourite despite racing on unsuitable ground. 

That performance marked Fleetfoot down as a bright prospect, according to his part-owner Tylicki, who recalled how he has seen the potential in the horse ever since he was catalogued as part of the Shadwell dispersal at Goffs last year. 

Tylicki said, “I took notice of this horse once the catalogue was published for the Goffs February Sale last year. Two weeks beforehand, we had the February Sale at Tattersalls, where I saw two of his siblings. One of those was Mashaaer (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}), who placed in the G1 Pretty Polly S. for Henry Spiller, and the other was a weanling by Blue Point (Ire).

“When I saw this fella in the flesh I was very impressed by him and, to cut a long story short, went off to Goffs to try and buy him. Unfortunately, I was completely blown out of the water but was ever so delighted to see that Mr Bolger bought him because the rest is history.” 

Fleetfoot was knocked down to Boherguy Stud, which is managed by Bolger's granddaughter Clare Manning, for €135,000. Having started his career at Bolger's Coolcullen Stables, Tylicki had forged a long and fruitful relationship with the legendary trainer, something the former jockey turned bloodstock agent says is enhancing his experience with Fleetfoot. 

He explained, “Life can be so good at times and so bad as well, but I obviously started with Mr Bolger and spent over three-and-a-half years there. It was a very tough school but it made a man out of me and got me on the right road in life. I knew exactly what I wanted in racing and in life when I left Mr Bolger's. We all know what happened to me in my career but I am now very focussed on the bloodstock side of things and, when I saw this horse, I absolutely fell in love with him, and so did Mr Bolger. It's such a pleasure to be a small part of the team that looked after me so well once upon a time and got me on the right road in life. I don't know how to describe my feelings, I am just overwhelmed with emotions and it's a great feeling. I won't forget this day in a hurry, that's for sure.”

Tylicki added, “Fleetfoot probably wasn't in love with the ground but he went on it and that is the main thing because he showed his versatility on the ground as well as the trip because there is no doubt that he will stay further in time. He just has that willing attitude that most of those good Teofilos have. Look, if there's one man to train a Teofilo, Mr Bolger is the man.”

Fleetfoot will now be aimed towards the Classics but just where the strapping colt lines out next is a different conversation for a different day according to Tylicki.

“He is entered in the Irish Guineas and Irish Derby and I think he is in the French 2,000 Guineas as well but, at this moment in time, all I am going to do is enjoy this evening! I am not sure where we will go but I am looking forward to the discussions once we know he came out of the race okay. The world is his oyster.”

Baaeed, Minzaal Continue Reporting In-Foal Mares

Shadwell and Derrinstown Stud report that both Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), the highest-rated turf racehorse in the world for a decade, and Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), the highest-rated sprinter in Europe in 2022, have over 30 mares scanning in-foal as the stallions commence covering their first books.

Baaeed's in-foal mares include G1 Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares S. winner Eshaada (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}); Seeking Solace (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), dam of 2019 champion 3-year-old sprinter in Europe and joint champion 3-year-old colt in England & Ireland in 2019, Ten Sovereigns (Ire) (No Nay Never); Azafata (Spa) (Motivator {GB}), dam of Group 1-performers Fleeting (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and Jannah Flower (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}); and Darmoiselle (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), the stakes-placed full-sister to 2018 champion 2-year-old colt in Europe and 2019 champion 3-year-old miler in Europe Too Darn Hot (GB), as well as MG1SP Lah Ti Dar (GB) and GSW & G1SP So Mi Dar (GB), among others.

Minzaal's mares scanned in-foal include Shenoya (Fr) (Zoffany {Ire}), his first mare scanned in foal, a stakes placed half-sister to GSP Like A Charm (Fr) (Charm Spirit {Ire}), belonging to Minzaal's breeder Ringfort Stud; G1SP Sparkling Beam (Ire) (Nayef); GSW Distinctive (GB) (Tobougg {Ire}); and Street Kitty (Ire) (Tiger Hill {Ire}), dam of MG1SP Sir Busker (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}).

“We are thrilled with how both Baaeed and Minzaal have commenced their first books, with each horse consistently reporting in-foal mares on a daily basis. Shadwell’s Danyah Shocks The Al Quoz Sprint

Eighth to Godolphin's race favourite Al Suhail (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in a conditions event on Super Saturday earlier this month, Shadwell's Danyah (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) turned the tables with a game showing close home to take the $1.5-million G1 Al Quoz Sprint over six furlongs of the Meydan turf  on Saturday.

Australian raider The Astrologist (Aus) (Zoustar {Aus}) was a head back in second, just to the good of Al Suhail in third. The gelding, who is a homebred, is the 75th group winner, and 22nd Group 1 winner for his sire, who stands at the Irish National Stud. Trained by Musabbeh Al Mheiri and ridden by Dane O'Neill, the 6-year-old had gained his first stakes win in the Listed Business Bay Challenge over seven furlongs on Feb. 10.
