Another Newmarket Triumph For Invincible Spirit’s Mutasaabeq

Practically unbeatable on Newmarket's Rowley Mile, Shadwell's Mutasaabeq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) made all to annexe back-to-back renewals of the G2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Joel S. on Friday and gain a fifth success from six visits to his favourite venue.

Always happy on the front end with the bias firmly for front-runners, the Charlie Hills-trained homebred son of Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway) had to work late to deny two others who have likewise been around the block but remain just shy of the very top.

They are the Freemason Lodge favourite Regal Reality (GB) (Intello {Ger}), who for some time up the rising ground to the line threatened to ruin the party for the 11-4 favourite, and the imperturbable Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) but their combined doggedness and three-pound advantage over the penalised winner was not enough. By hard-fought head and half-length margins, Mutasaabeq saw them off to add to his Suffolk tally which also includes the rescheduled G2 Sandown Mile in May, a 2-year-old novice contest and conditions event the following season in which he gained TDN Rising Star status. The returning Maljoom (Ire) (Caravaggio) was never able to land a blow and finished fifth.

“This was right up there with his best,” jockey Jim Crowley said. “He loves it here, he likes to get rolling between the three and the two and where he has folded in the past, in fairness when they came to him he kept fighting and toughed it out well.”

Charlie Hills added, “It is a case of horses for courses and he has got a tremendous record at the Rowley Mile. I think when he wins he puts a lot into it and so he can't put too many races together, although he is a little bit older now and a bit stronger.”

“When he won here as a 3-year-old, he looked unbeatable and he was not far off favourite for the 2000 Guineas just off winning a conditions race. He has been pretty sound through his career, but he has not had too many chances at Group 1 level. I've always felt he is up to it and I'll speak to Angus [Gold] and Sheikha Hissa, but we could have a look at America for the [Breeders' Cup] Mile–that could be an option.

“What do you do with a horse that has won three Group 2s? He is a good miler and he likes fast ground. I'm sure he will handle the journey and he only needs to improve a couple of lengths with the travel and the conditions and you never quite know. A track like this tests his stamina, but a two-turn mile at Santa Anita will suit him ideally.”

Following on from Thursday's G3 Tattersalls S. win of his relative Alyanaabi (Ire) (Too Darn Hot {GB}), Mutasaabeq adds another chapter to the remarkable story of his third dam Height Of Fashion (Fr) (Bustino {GB}). A son of the aforementioned G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. heroine Ghanaati, he shares his second dam Sarayir (Mr. Prospector) with Alyanaabi and is therefore linked to the operation's current and very recent Sea The Stars (Ire) luminaries Baaeed (GB) and Hukum (Ire) and past greats Nashwan and Nayef.

Invincible Spirit's sire line also shows up in the family's G3 Cumberland Lodge S.-winning sire Mawatheeq by Danzig, the G2 Queen Mary S. winner and 1000 Guineas-placed Maqaasid (GB) by Green Desert and the GII New York S. winner Makderah (Ire) by Danzig's Danehill. Ghanaati also produced the G3 Mahab Al Shimaal scorer Wafy (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the Royal Hunt Cup winner Afaak (GB) by Green Desert's son Oasis Dream (GB).

Gimcrack Hero Lake Forest Part Of Tattersalls Autumn HIT Catalogue

The smart G2 Gimcrack S. winner Lake Forest (GB) (No Nay Never) (lot 726) is one of the highlights of the five-day Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale at Park Paddocks in Newmarket from Oct. 23-27.

Part of a 1,750-strong catalogue, the juvenile is rated 109 and will be consigned by William Haggas's Somerville Lodge. He currently holds an entry in the G1 Middle Park S. on Sept. 30.

Some of the other notable lots include G1 Criterium International victor Proud And Regal (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (lot 674) from Coolmore; a pair of group winners consigned by The Castlebridge Consignment–Audience (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) (lot 1057) and Lord Massusus (Ire) (Markaz {Ire}) (lot 663); and Juddmonte's G2 Prix Niel third Bravais (GB) (Frankel {GB}) (lot 1076).

In 2022, I'm A Gambler (Ire) (No Nay Never) topped the sale at 850,000gns when sold to Red Baron's Barn & Rancho Temescal prior to becoming stakes-placed in the U.S. From a smaller four-day catalogue, 1,006 horses sold for 36,164,500gns. The average was 35,949gns and the median was 16,000gns.

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “Every year we see horses purchased at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale winning at the highest level, with no less than 83 individual group/listed winners since 2020 bought at the sale including seven Group/Grade 1 winners. Sunday Insights: Ellis Park Maidens Highlight Sunday Card

5th-ELP, $70K, Msw, 2yo, 6f, 2:45 p.m.

Shadwell's MUAZARAH (Into Mischief) leads a battle of the homebreds in Sunday's fifth race at Ellis Park. The Todd Pletcher trainee is out of a half-sister to the dam of a pair of prolific European runners in MG1SW Baaeed (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), who debuted at Shadwell Stud this season, and MG1SW Hukum (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}).

Just to his outside, Unreasonable (Honor Code), racing in the Calumet Farm colors, is out of a half to both GISW Geri (Theatrical {Ire}) and MGSW/MGISP A.P. Arrow (A.P. Indy).

One of a pair of starters for Steve Asmussen, Black Iron (Constitution) is a joint venture for breeders Doug and Felicia Branham and Winchell Thoroughbreds. The colt's third dam is responsible for MGISW and leading sire Quality Road (Elusive Quality).

The only colt not racing for his breeders, The Process (More Than Ready) was a $370,000 Keeneland September purchase last year. His half-brother, Confidence Game (Candy Ride {Arg}), took this year's GII Rebel. S. and he is out of a half-sister to the great Zenyatta (Street Cry {Ire}) and to MGISW Balance (Thunder Gulch). The most expensive buy of this field, Awesome Road (Quality Road) was a $600,000 yearling at Keeneland and is a half to SW/GISP Endless Chatter (First Samurai) as well as SW/G1SP Whitecliffsofdover (War Front). His dam is a half to MGSW and late sire Pulpit (A.P. Indy) while his extended family includes GSW/MGISP and sire Tale of the Cat (Storm Cat).

Just to his inside is another Calumet homebred in Loma Paloma (Mineshaft) whose dam is a half to SW and young sire Nashville (Speightstown).

Beyond Stoked (Into Mischief) brought $450,000 at this year's OBS March Sale and races for Boardshorts Stables and trainer Brian Lynch.

Rounding out the group to the outside is Chryso Alogo (Bolt d'Oro), a Brad Cox trainee whose dam is a full-sister to GSW Shumoos and a half to SW/GSP Steady On (Pioneerof the Nile). He brought a final bid of $400,000 from a lengthy ownership group that includes Qatar Racing LLC and Spendthrift Farm at last year's Fasig-Tipton New York Saratoga Select Yearling Sale. TJCIS PPS

Paul Hanagan to Retire on Friday

Paul Hanagan, the former dual champion jockey in Britain, has announced that he will retire from the saddle at York on Friday. The 42-year-old will take one ride at the track in the first race for Richard Fahey, the trainer with whom he has enjoyed a significant portion of his success.

Hanagan was crowned champion apprentice in 2002 and eight years later gained the first of his two consecutive championships in the senior ranks, becoming the only jockey based in the north of England to have landed the title more than once. He notched his first Group 1 victory in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere on the Fahey-trained Wootton Bassett (GB), who is now one of the most sought-after stallions in Europe.

In 2012, Hanagan was named as first jockey for Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum on the retirement of Richard Hills and was retained to ride the Shadwell horses for five years. During that period he won his first British Classic on Taghrooda (GB) in the Oaks as well as a trio of Group 1 sprints on Muhaarar (GB). Simultaneously maintaining his association with Fahey's Musley Bank Stables, he also partnered Mayson (GB) in the July Cup to post a first Group 1 in Britain for both himself and the trainer, and later Sands Of Mali (Fr) in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint.

Speaking on Racing TV during the first day of York's Ebor meeting, Hanagan said, “As you can imagine it's quite emotional. It's difficult, I think any professional sportsperson will tell you, especially doing it as long as I've been doing it for.

“There are a few things involved in making my decision, I had a pretty bad fall about two years ago and I've never quite been the same after it, I fractured my back in three places. It's not so much painful riding, but it's getting to the level of fitness you need to be at to be a professional jockey and I don't think I was getting to that standard.”

He added, “Looking back, I was very proud of myself for getting where I have [after the fall]. I managed to ride a couple of Royal Ascot winners after coming back, but keeping the fitness right was causing me a bit of pain and retiring here at the Ebor meeting feels right.

“I was two-times champion jockey as a kid from Warrington without a lot of racing experience, so I keep telling kids it can be done.”

Reflecting on his career highlights, Hanagan continued, “I've been blessed to ride some beautiful horses for some wonderful people. To win a Classic on Taghrooda was special – I don't think I'll ever forget my family's faces that day.

“Muhaarar is probably one of the best sprinters I rode and I was honoured to have a five-year association with Sheikh Hamdan and I had an even longer career with Richard Fahey, who I owe a lot to.”

One of an elite band of jockeys to have ridden more than 2,000 winners, a landmark he reached in November 2020, he has had two winners in the last week, including on Macarone (GB) at Beverley for Rob Burrow, the rugby league star who is battling Motor Neurone Disease.

Hanagan will take up a new role with the Good Racing Company in the near future. 

He said, “I'm really looking forward to working with The Good Racing Company, a charity that raises funds for different charities, namely working with Rob Burrow, and I'm going to be guiding them on which horses to buy.

“I rode Rob Burrow's first winner at Beverley the other day and that was very special. I've been riding for 26 years and it would be criminal of me not to do something more in racing.”
