Shadwell Reveals 2021 Mating Plans for Their Quality Broodmare Band

The mating plans for the high-quality Shadwell broodmare band were announced by the stud on Monday. Nunnery Stud's four stallions, led by new recruit Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), will all be well supported by Shadwell.

Several top-flight winners are booked to the 2020 G1 Sussex S. victor, among them dual Group 1 winners Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway) and South African multiple Grade 1 winner Majmu (Aus) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}). They are joined by Ghanaati's Rahy half-sister, the stakes winner and G1 Oaks third Rumoush, who already has foaled a trio of black-type scorers; two-time Grade 2 winner and multiple Grade 1-placed Nafaayes (Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}); and the stakes-placed Asheerah (GB) (Shamardal), the dam of Classic hero and young stallion Awtaad (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}).

Eqtidaar (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) landed his best prize in Royal Ascot's G1 Commonwealth Cup and his first foals are hitting the ground this season. Shadwell is sending him the stakes-placed Tamadhor (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}) from the family of G2 Cherry Hinton S. victress Memory (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). Mudaaraah (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), who struck at listed level, placed in the G3 Prestige S. and is out of a half-sister to outstanding European highweight Bahri (Riverman), will be bred to Tasleet (GB) (Showcasing {GB}). The three-time Group 1 runner-up's first foals are yearlings of 2021. Rounding out the quartet of Nunnery Stud stallions, champion sprinter Muhaarar (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) is the beau of choice for stakes winner Etaab (Street Cry {Ire})-also from the family of Bahri–and is just one of several mares headed to the sire of nine black-type performers.

Other Group 1 winners and producers from Shadwell's paddocks will go farther afield for their mates. G1 Prix Saint-Alary winner Tawkeel (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Ghanaati's daughter Alandalos (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) are both headed to Darley sire Dubawi (Ire). G1 Oaks and G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. victress Taghrooda (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) is booked to Lope de Vega (Ire). She is not the only mare to visit the Ballylinch supremo, with Group 3 striker and Group 1 placed Thawaany (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}), who is a half-sister to Classic winner Kew Gardens (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), also on Lope de Vega's dance card; as is stakes winner Mutebah (Ire) (Marju {Ire}), the dam of G2 Champagne S. runner-up Albasheer (Ire) (Shamardal).

A quintet of Shadwell mares will visit Juddmonte's Kingman (GB) at Banstead Manor Stud, with the recently retired five-time Group 2 winner and G1 Royallieu third Enbihaar (Ire) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}) leading the way. The other four mares are rounded out by G3 Sweet Solera S. heroine Tajaanus (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}); multiple group winner Tantheem (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}); G2 Blandford S. scorer Tarfasha (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}); and Nazeef's dam Handassa (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Kingman's barnmate Frankel (GB) will also be patronised by some Shadwell mares including Tatweej (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), herself a half-sister to champion 3-year-old Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}); and Group 3 producer Rayaheen (GB) (Nayef), a daughter of G1 1000 Guineas heroine Natagora (Fr) (Divine Light {Jpn}).

A mare bound for the court of Sea The Stars (Ire) is Garmoosha (Kingmambo). A daughter of Oaks winner Eswarah (GB) (Unfuwain), she has already produced the highly progressive Group 3 winner Raabihah to the cover of the Gilltown Stud-based stallion. The other five mares to also visit Sea The Stars, include the Awtaad's half-sister Alghabrah (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}), listed winner Maqsad (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), and Tamayuz's half-sisters–Ettisaal (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Muhawalah (Ire) (Nayef). Mubhirah (GB) (Raven's Pass), a half-sister to Classic heroine Taghrooda, will also visit the Aga Khan stallion.

Dark Angel (Ire) will once again welcome G1 Cheveley Park S. third Maqaasid (GB) (Green Desert), who already has a juvenile colt and yearling filly by the son of Acclamation (GB).

In Ireland, Derrinstown Stud residents Tamayuz (GB) (Nayef), Awtaad, and incoming sire King of Change (GB) (Farhh {GB}) are also being supported by Sheikh Hamdan's broodmare band. Roster veteran Tamayuz welcomes Safwa (Ire) (Green Desert), who has already produced G1 Lockinge S. winner Mustashry (GB) (Tamayuz {GB}) on this same mating and the group-placed Munaaser (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), as well as her daughter Rabaabah (Ire) (Shamardal). Tamayuz, the sire of 22 black-type winners, will also cover G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Bethrah (Ire) (Marju {Ire}) and the stakes producer Masaafat (GB) (Act One {GB}), both of whom visited the 16-year-old last term.

Awtaad, the winner of the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and whose oldest foals are 3-year-olds, will cover Group 3 winner Rawaaq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). King of Change, the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. hero and G1 2000 Guineas runner-up, will be sent the winning Qaadira (Mr. Greeley), who hails from the extended family of prolific blue hen Height of Fashion (Fr) (Bustino {GB}).

Saturday’s Insights: Charlatan Half-Brother Gets Going at Gulfstream

Given his name, it might be more fitting if Peter Brant's BENNYFROMTHEBRONX (Tapit) were making his first trip to the races at the Jersey Shore, but instead, the half-brother to GISW 'TDN Rising Star' and recent Saudi Cup runner-up Charlatan (Speightstown) gets his career started at Gulfstream Park Saturday afternoon. The bay, a $300,000 Keeneland September acquisition, is the latest to the races from his dam, two-time graded winner and three-time Grade I-placed Authenticity (Quiet American), who is also responsible for SW Hanalei Moon. The colt's third dam is Gallagher's Stud's Appealing Missy (Lypheor {GB}), who produced SW & GSP Statement (Seattle Slew) and the stakes-placed dam of GSW & GISP New York-bred Rahys' Appeal (Rahy). The Apr. 20 foal is out of the unraced Sablah (Distorted Humor), whose son Takaful (Bernardini) became a 'TDN Rising Star' with an eight-length debut romp in late 2016 and later–reinvented as a one-turn horse–took out the 2018 GI Vosburgh S. Sablah is also the dam of Haikal (Daaher), a maiden winner at second asking whose marquee victory came in the GIII Gotham S. in 2019. Storm Song (Summer Squall), the Eclipse Award-winning juvenile filly of 1996, and Uncle Mo, champion of his generation in 2010, are the dam and sire, respectively, of Aaron Sones's homebred MY FAVORITE UNCLE. The May-foaled dark bay is a half-brother to GISP Trojan Nation (Street Cry {Ire}); MGSP Balladry (Unbridled's Song); and to the dam of the legendary European stayer and MG1SW Order of St George (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and GSWs Angel Terrace (Ghostzapper) and Asperity (War Chant). Grass-Centric Carnival Card at Meydan

Turf races rule the day in Thursday's Dubai World Cup Carnival card at Meydan. Each of the quintet of races for Thoroughbreds take place on the grass, with the $195,000 G3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy Sponsored by Gulf News the crown jewel.

Held over 2810 metres, the contest drew 2019 race winner and G3 Deutsches St Leger hero Ispolini (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) who anchors the Godolphin brigade. Charlie Appleby's bay has been seen on the racecourse only sparingly, and he was in action only twice last year with a staying on fourth in the Listed Tapster S. at Haydock his best run. Off the board in the Listed Dubai Racing Club Classic when in need of a run on Jan. 21, Ispolini completed the superfecta in the Feb. 4 Listed Meydan Cup over course and distance.

Appleby said of Ispolini,”He needed his first run and ran well second time. They were both handicaps when he has big weights, so on level weights here, he should be thereabouts in a competitive race.”

In front of him that day were Saeed bin Suroor barnmates Volcanic Sky (GB) (Street Cry {Ire}) and Global Heat (Ire) (Toronado {Ire}) in second and third, respectively.

Ismail Mohammed's Away He Goes (Ire) (Farhh {GB}) has given every indication that he is maturing into a force to be reckoned with in the staying division later on in the Carnival. A 2400-metre handicap at Doncaster went his way in September, and the 5-year-old gelding-equal to Ispolini on official ratings of 107–has filled the frame in his two latest runs. Third in the Listed Dubai Racing Club Classic locally going a quarter mile shorter on Jan. 21, he went one better over that trip in a local handicap on Feb. 11.

Mohammed said, “He has run very well both times this year over 2400m and, we hope, the extra 400m is going to be in his favour.”

The G3 Dubai Millennium S. is conducted over 2000 metres, and, although light on experience, the three-time winner Star Safari (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) looms one of the main protagonists. Listed placed two back in the Zabeel Turf on Jan. 28, the Charlie Appleby trainee stalked and pounced to win a local handicap over 2410 metres on this course on Feb. 11.

“He ran well on his comeback after 11 months off and won nicely last time,” said Appleby, who is seeking a fourth consecutive winner and a fifth edition in six years. “That was only his sixth career start and returning to 2000m should not be an issue.”

Three more Godolphin runners hail from the Saeed bin Suroor barn, with recent G2 Singspiel S. third and 2019 G1 Jebel Hatta victor Dream Castle (GB) (Frankel {GB}) booked in stall seven and stablemate Royal Marine (Ire) (Raven's Pass), who won the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere in 2018, next to him in gate eight.

Simon Crisford's Halimi (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) returns off of three weeks' rest. The SP Rabbah Racing colourbearer was fourth in the Listed Dubai Racing Club Classic on Jan. 21 and was outfooted throughout the Listed Meydan Cup going a half-mile longer on Feb. 4.

Meydan's third race is the 1600-metre Listed Meydan Classic on grass. Top of the heap on ratings at 112 is the well-hyped Master of the Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) for the Godolphin/Charlie Appleby axis. The colt, who holds Classic entries in the Irish 2000 Guineas/Irish Derby, overcame a rough break to win the G2 Superlative S. last summer. Stepped up to Group 1 company, the son of G1 French 1000 Guineas bridesmaid Firth of Lorne (Ire) (Danehill) was fourth in the National S. at The Curragh when last seen on Sept. 13.

“Master of the Seas is the class horse in the race, but as I said to the whole team, the focus is very much on Europe and pointing him toward the Guineas,” said Appleby. “He's had a long time off and he's going out there to hopefully get a nice experience, but whatever he does, he'll improve a lot for it. He was very keen in the National S. and did it the wrong way around, so I'd like to see him get into a nice rhythm and see the race out, doing it the right way around, with very much an eye on Europe.”

His stablemate, MGSP Naval Crown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), has finished third in three consecutive Group 3 races, including in the Feb. 4 G3 UAE 2000 Guineas and should come forward from that effort.

Fawzi Nass saddles first-out winner Mayehaab (GB) (New Approach {Ire}). Successful by a length over Yurman (Arg) (Asiatic Boy {Arg}) in a 1700-metre Meydan maiden affair on Feb. 13, the chestnut breaks from the rail.

The evening's nightcap is the over-subscribed Listed Meydan Challenge over 1400 metres also on grass, with Godolphin's Well of Wisdom (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) signed on to tote a field-leading 136 pounds. The MGSP Charlie Appleby trainee captured the 2020 Listed Meydan Classic last February, as well as a June 13 Sandown handicap in successive starts. Off the board in the G1 Prix Jean Prat after making the early running in July, he rebounded with a listed win at Deauville in August. After an unplaced finish in the G3 Prix Daphnis there on Aug. 22, he was gelded and Feb. 25 is his first start back.

Saeed bin Suroor sends out Light and Dark (GB) (Shamardal), who won a Kempton all-weather handicap going this trip on Oct. 7. Listed winner Escobar (Ire) (Famous Name {GB}) has not enjoyed the best luck of late, and, although he ran third in both the G2 Lennox S. and G3 Supreme S. both at Goodwood last summer, the David O'Meara trainee has posted three successive off the board finishes, including the Feb. 18 G2 Zabeel Mile.

Charlie Hills's Fleeting Prince (Ire) (No Nay Never) appears to be improving at the right time and made up some late ground to take third in the Listed Dubai Sprint on Feb. 4 for a career best, one better than Could Be King (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) for Ken Condon.

Group 1 Trainer Robert Armstrong Passes Away at 77

Retired trainer Robert Armstrong passed away on Feb. 5 after a brief illness, reported Racing Post. He was 77.

A trainer of champions Moorestyle (GB) (Manacle {GB}) and Never So Bold (GB) (Bold Lad {Ire}), Armstrong trained from his Newmarket base of St Gatien Stables for 27 years until 2000. He was a third-generation trainer after his father and grandfather. In total, his horses won 13 Group 1 races. Sheikh Hamdan utilised Armstrong as a trainer for approximately 15 years until his retirement. One of the notable winners in the Shadwell blue and white was Maroof (Danzig), who saluted in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. in 1994.

“It's very sad news,” said Shadwell Racing Manager Angus Gold to Racing Post. “Robert was a wonderful man to me personally and he had a very good relationship with Sheikh Hamdan.

“We enjoyed a lot of good times together and he was a very easy man to deal with. He was a fascinating man to be around and was a very generous host and a great trainer to boot.”

“Mujadil and Mujtahid were probably the best he trained for us as well as Maroof who was an underrated horse. There certainly was no fluke about the way he won the QEII that day.”

Armstrong is survived by his wife Jane, sister Susan Piggott, the wife of legendary jockey Lester Piggott, and nieces Tracy Piggott and Maureen Haggas.
