Big Names To Train Up to Breeders’ Cup

A pair of Belmont-based Grade I winners turned in works over the last few days and will be trained up to the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar Nov. 5 and 6, their trainers confirmed Sept. 19.

Shadwell Stables' 'TDN Rising Star' Malathaat (Curlin) breezed an easy four furlongs over the Belmont training track Sept. 18 in :49.49, her first breeze since winning the GI Alabama S. at Saratoga Aug. 19. She will not have another start prior to the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff at Del Mar Nov. 6.

“It was her first work back and she did it well,” Todd Pletcher said. “Her energy level is really good at the moment. We plan on training up to the Breeders' Cup.”

Winner of the GI Ashland S. on seasonal debut, the $1.05-million Keeneland September yearling outgamed Search Results (Flatter) in the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks before suffering her lone defeat to date at the hooves of Maracuja (Honor Code) in the GI CCA Oaks July 24. She led home a 1-2 finish for her sire in the Alabama, besting Clairiere by a convincing 1 1/2 lengths.

Klaravich Stables' Domestic Spending (GB) (Kingman {GB}), a two-time Grade I winner this season, worked five furlongs over the Belmont inner turf course in 1:00.80 Sunday morning in the company of stablemate and French Group 3 winner Flop Shot (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) and will stretch out to 12 furlongs for the first time in his next start, the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Turf Nov. 6.

“They went fine, it was a good work for both of them,” trainer Chad Brown told the NYRA press office.

Dead-heat winner of the GI Old Forester Turf Classic in May and the GI Resorts World Manhattan S. the following month, Domestic Spending came with a late run in a paceless renewal of the GI Arlington Million Aug. 14 and just missed.

Klaravich's Bricks and Mortar (Giant's Causeway) won the 2019 Million and successfully handled the stretch out to the mile and a half in the Turf to secure Horse of the Year honors.

Belmont Breezes…

'TDN Rising Star' Life Is Good (Into Mischief), runner-up in the GI H. Allen Jerkens S. in his return to the races Aug. 28, tuned up for Saturday's one-mile GII Kelso S. with a half-mile work over the Belmont training track Sept. 18. The bay colt, campaigned by CHC Inc. and WinStar Farm, covered the distance in :48.46 (17/132).

“I thought he worked super,” Pletcher said. “I was really pleased with the way he went and it looked like he was moving along there really well.”

Pletcher gave no indication as to a potential Breeders' Cup destination for Life Is Good.

Also on the worktab for the Pletcher barn was 'TDN Rising Star' Wit (Practical Joke), who went a half-mile in :49.93 (70/132) while prepping for the GI Champagne S. at Belmont Oct. 2. Winner of his first two trips to the post, including an eight-length romp in the GIII Sanford S. July 17, the $575,000 KEESEP yearling was off to a sluggish start in the GI Hopeful S. Sept. 6 and came home second to Gunite (Gun Runner).

“He worked well,” Pletcher said. “Hopefully, we get a little cleaner break this time. It certainly hurt his chances, he fell on his head leaving there, but I thought he ran on courageously after that.”

Pletcher added that Annapolis (War Front), accorded 'Rising Star' status for a highly impressive debut over the Saratoga turf course Sept. 4, would make his next appearance in the GII Pilgrim S. at Belmont Oct. 3.

Gufo (Declaration of War), last-out winner of the GI Sword Dancer S. at Saratoga Aug. 28, will make his next start in the Oct. 9 GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational S. He breezed an easy half-mile in :52 over the Belmont inner turf course Sunday morning.

Shadwell to Undergo Business Review

Shadwell, which was the international racing and breeding empire of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum who passed away in March, will undergo a full business review. The company's operations in the UK, Ireland and the USA will contract, with the key focus being on quality and competition at the highest level of the sport with horses of the calibre of Group/Grade 1 winners Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and Malathaat (Curlin). As a result, a number of horses-in-training and homebred yearlings will be sold this autumn, and its broodmare band will be will be further reduced through dispersals in the next few months.

The family of the late sheikh wish to stress that they remain extremely passionate about the sport and through the chairmanship of Sheikha Hissa, are committed to ensuring that their father's legacy endures. Shadwell intends to retain a significant number of homebred foals and will continue its global stallion operations.

Chris Kennard, the UK director of Shadwell Estate Company Ltd, said, “As part of a long-term plan for Shadwell to operate on a sustainable footing, a recent decision has been made to contract the size of the global business. This will involve the imminent sale of a substantial number of horses–including yearlings, horses in training and breeding stock, and in due course, a reorganisation of each of the worldwide operations.”

Muhaarar’s Israr A TDN Rising Star At Donny

Doncaster's St Leger festival had begun in the wrong way for Shadwell as the 2-year-old Jadhlaan (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) had suffered a fatal injury in the opening race, injuring Jim Crowley in the process, but there was some consolation half an hour later as the homebred Israr (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) earned TDN Rising Star status on debut. Sent off at 8-1 for the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden S. over a mile, the John and Thady Gosden-trained son of the operation's G1 Epsom Oaks and G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. heroine Taghrooda (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) was awkwardly away from the wide stall and lost ground veering right under Rab Havlin. Quickly gaining composure to track the leader of his group towards the stand's rail, the bay was green isolated on the wing in the middle part of the race but came alive instantly when asked to close approaching two out. Swooping on the 66-1 shot Savvy Victory (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) inside the final furlong, he asserted to score a shade cosily by half a length, with 1 1/2 lengths back to the winner's stablemate and 5-4 favourite Frantastic (GB) (Frankel {GB}), the full-brother to the dual G1 Champion S. hero Cracksman (GB) who put up a highly encouraging debut effort in his own right. “It's a very laid-back family and a mile-and-a-half family, I loved the way he finished out passing the line and he took a while to pull up,” Havlin said of the March-foaled half-brother to the useful 102-rated handicapper Almighwar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). “Taghrooda and Almighwar were laid-back, but he's a bit quicker–he's smaller, stockier and stronger than them. They went a bit slow early and he was not really taking the bit and racing a bit babyish, but when I gave him a squeeze he was all there for me and finished out well. He's obviously pretty nice and I love his mindset, so hopefully he has a bright future.” Israr, who becomes Muhaarar's second TDN Rising Star after the recent Newmarket winner Razzle Dazzle (GB), is the third foal out of Taghrooda, who was also runner-up in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks and third in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe during her stunning 3-year-old campaign. Her dam was the triple listed scorer Ezima (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), who was also second in the G2 Lancashire Oaks and hails from the family of the high-class stayers Enzeli (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}) and Estimate (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}) and the G1 Irish Oaks heroine Ebadiyla (Ire) (Sadler's Wells). Sea the Stars’ Baaeed Takes The Moulin

Up in class and up against milers proven at the top level on Sunday, Shadwell's Baaeed (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) went through the motions in the manner of a true professional to collect the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp. Sent off the 1-2 favourite having shown rare talent in the Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. at Newmarket July 8 and the G3 Thoroughbred S. at Goodwood July 30, the William Haggas-trained bay was sent into third early by Jim Crowley and waited outside with no threat of interference. Seizing the lead from the aggressively-ridden Novemba (Ger) (Gleneagles {Ire}) approaching the furlong pole, the homebred held Order of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) to score by 1 1/4 lengths, with Victor Ludorum (GB) (Shamardal) a short neck away in third. “He's a super horse who is improving all the time and still learning,” the winning rider said. “He was idling in front and is very exciting. It's the first group 1 in Europe for Sheikha Hissa, so I'm pleased for her. He's a very easy ride and travels well and stays a mile very well.”

Maiden winners who impress on the clock as well as visually are often false dawns, but Baaeed went forward from his eye-catching debut at Leicester June 7 to register a stunning 7 1/2-length success in a Newmarket novice 12 days later. If there was any chance of a bubble bursting, it would have happened in a fiercely-competitive renewal of the July Course's Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. but his answer was a four-length success as lacking in drama as it is possible to see from a lightly-raced 3-year-old so soon after his introduction to racing. That was on good-to-firm, but as the soft dried out to produce a tacky surface at the Goodwood festival he just churned out another star display when the 6 1/2-length winner of the G3 Thoroughbred S. Demanding a tilt at a race such as this in the process, the speedier and classier version of his full-brother Hukum (Ire) was just as unfazed surrounded by winners of a Breeders' Cup, a mile Classic and a super-strong Falmouth.

It was the heroine of the latter contest who broke best, but Jim Crowley was keen to close the door on Snow Lantern (GB) (Frankel {GB}) as Ryan Moore sent on Order of Australia and then Novemba surged by and into isolation in front. That misjudgement of pace by Bauyrzhan Murzabayev meant the G2 German 1000 Guineas winner was an irrelevance up ahead and with Baaeed sticking close to Order of Australia the tactics were already sorted out by the time the home turn was navigated. From the two to the one, the deciding factor was that the Haggas star was quicker than his Ballydoyle rival as Victor Ludorum put up his best performance in some time on a real going day.

“It looks like he was a little bit fresh today and slightly jumped on the bit as the German filly went by and he didn't have cover, but he stayed on nicely in the straight,” Maureen Haggas said. “In fact, he had a little bit of a battle which he hadn't had before so that will be good for his education. I'd imagine there will be some improvement to come, but it will be more from the learning process than physically. Now he's had a battle he might be even better. I would say the [Oct. 16 G1] Queen Elizabeth II [at Ascot] is the logical next race, but we don't want to run him on ground that is too soft so we'll see nearer the time. There is also the Breeders' Cup. He's very lightly-raced and a brand new horse really, so hopefully he might stay in training as a 4-year-old but that's up to his owners.”

Baaeed rates as the fastest group 1 winner for his illustrious sire so far, which is a surprise given that his aforementioned full-sibling Hukum has won two renewals of the G3 Geoffrey Freer S. over 13 furlongs and a G3 Silver Cup over a mile and three quarters. The dam is the Listed Prix de Liancourt winner Aghareed (Kingmambo), who is a daughter of the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf and GI Flower Bowl Invitational heroine Lahudood (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}). The fourth dam is the Listed Cheshire Oaks runner-up Bashayer (Mr. Prospector), a full-sister to the dual listed scorer Sarayir who is in turn responsible for the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. heroine Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway). Bashayer is kin to the legendary champion Nashwan and the four-times group 1-winning Nayef et al. Aghareed's unraced 2-year-old filly by Intello (Ger) is named Zaghaareed (GB), while she also has a yearling colt by Nathaniel (Ire) and a colt foal by Night of Thunder (Ire).
