Hukum Strikes Gold On Way To Sheema Classic

The class act of the field, Hukum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), gave Shadwell Stable a dream start to Super Saturday and booked his ticket for Dubai World Cup night when landing the G2 Dubai City Of Gold in a tight finish with Without A Fight (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}).

Drawn widest of all in stall 14, the Owen Burrows-trained Hukum jumped well and gradually manoeuvred to a handy spot tucked away behind the leading pack which was headed by Amhran Na Bhfiann (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who set a steady pace just ahead of Island Brave (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}). As the tightly bunched field approached the turn for home, Crowley had Hukum travelling easily and stalking the front-runners as Global Storm (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) took up the running. The Godolphin leader was soon picked up in the straight as Hukum and Without A Fight tussled for the top spot. The latter lived to his name, battling all the way to the line but eventually having to settle for second best, just a head behind the winner. Global Storm stayed on to take third.

“We were using it as a prep run for World Cup night and I thought we got into a raceable position from where we were drawn,” said Crowley. “But the pace wasn't very strong so I had to make a move a little sooner on him but he stick on well. He's a high-class horse who has been winning Group 2s and Group 3s, and he deserves to take his place in another Group 1. I expect him to come forward for that.”

That next Group 1 challenge will be the Dubai Sheema Classic in three weeks' time for the consistent 5-year-old who has now eight of his 13 starts, including three Group 3 contests last season at Ascot, Newbury and York. His sole try to date at the top level was when finishing fifth, just over four lengths behind Galileo Chrome (Ire) in the G1 St Leger.

Pedigree notes

A Shadwell homebred, Hukum is a full-brother to the unbeaten dual Group 1 winner Baaeed (Ire) and a half to the treble winner Kasbaan (GB) (Dansili {GB}). Their dam Aghareed (Kingmambo) was a Listed winner at Longchamp when trained for Sheikh Hamdan by John Hammond and was herself the first foal of the GI Breeders' Cup Fill & Mare Turf winner Lahudood (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}), a great grand-daughter of the celebrated Shadwell foundation mare Height Of Fashion (Fr) (Bustino {GB}).

After the 4-year-old Baaeed, Aghareed has the unraced 3-year-old filly Zaghaareed (GB) (Intello {Ger}), a Nathaniel (Ire) juvenile colt named Naqeeb (Ire), and a yearling colt by Night Of Thunder (Ire). She was barren last year to New Bay (GB).

Giant’s Causeway Colt Smart Winner at Meydan

1ST-Meydan, AED82,500, Cond., 3-3, NH/SH 3yo, 1400mT, 1:24.35, gd.
MONAADAH (c, 3, Giant's Causeway–Almusafa, by Haafhd {GB}), one of three horses-and now three winners–in the final crop of the legendary 'Iron Horse' Giant's Causeway, made his debut a winning one at Meydan on Thursday. Joining GIII Sam F. Davis S. hero and GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity third Classic Causeway and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile third Giant Game, the colt punched the breeze from the bell while out widest of all. Near the vanguard despite his isolation, he sidled over to keep an eye on the leaders in midpack, but was no less than three wide rounding the bend. Still idling a bit for Jim Crowley, Monaadah was popped the question leaving the bend and set sail for the front, drawing even around the 400-metre mark. He edged past Moqadar (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who had taken over from the longtime pacesetter Street Mood (Street Boss) inside the 300-metre pole and surged home to win by a widening 4 1/2 lengths. Silver Jubilee (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) made up some late ground to take second, two lengths to the good of Moqadar. Street Mood hung on for fourth, another 3 1/4 lengths behind. Monaadah is the fourth foal and third winner from three to race for his two-time winning dam Almusafa. The bay mare has a juvenile colt by The Factor and a yearling filly by Dads Caps. Out of the stakes-placed Basaata (Dixieland Band), she was bred to Cat Burgler last year. This is the same family as the Hong Kong wunderkind Golden Sixty (Aus) (Medaglia d'Oro). Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, AED49,500. VIDEO.

‘Vibrancy’ Returns To Goffs With Buoyant February Trade

KILDARE, Ireland–The ever-changing nature of the bloodstock sales scene, particularly through two years of pandemic-induced disruption, has prompted regular use of the phrase 'direct comparisons do not apply'. This is certainly true of this year's February Sale at Goffs, which was extended to three days for the first time in a while. So while the fluctuations of percentage points in different sectors of the market may mean little, what can be gleaned from the returns over the last three days is that there has been a pleasingly solid if unflashy start to the Irish sales year.

Even being able to hold a live sale is not something that any of the auction houses have been able to take for granted in recent times, but when this auction last happened in roughly the same format two years ago, just before the world ground to a juddering halt, a smaller catalogue resulted in 293 horses sold for an average of €13,920 and median of €6,500. Now, in this new world of covid compliance officers and masks here and there, the bloodstock world continues to rally in the face of adversity, and both those markers improved significantly this week, to €17,103 (+25%) and €9,000 (+12.5%). The turnover was €6,020,200 for 352 horses sold at a clearance rate of 72%.

“We are pleased to have kicked off 2022 in a positive way and, perhaps more importantly, with a feeling of normality,” said Goffs Group chief executive Henry Beeby.

“The result has been a sale of vibrancy that picked up the positivity of the Goffs November Foal & Breeding Stock Sale with strong competition in each category. Of course comparisons with 12 months ago are legally redundant but it is heartening to see that the sale has made significant progress when compared to 2020 by rising by nigh on 50%.”

He added, “As in November we would like to pay particular tribute to the Shadwell Estates draft from Derrinstown Stud and from Baroda Stud as their blue blooded consignment added additional depth to the catalogue although there were several other drafts of note for which we are also most appreciative whilst we are grateful to the entire vendor group for supporting the sale as their first choice in such huge numbers. They have been rewarded with a broad and eclectic buying bench from home and abroad all of which was backed up by a significant online presence.

“So all in all a very encouraging start to 2022 which allows us to look forward with a degree of hope and confidence.”

For the final session of broodmares offered on Thursday, the overall tally was increased by takings of €1,751,200 for 109 sold (76%) at an average of €16,006.

The only mare sold with a covering to the promising young sire Mehmas (Ire) commanded the top price of the final day, with Recife (Ger), a daughter of Giant's Causeway out of a full-sister to the GI Beverley D S. winner Dynaforce (Dynaformer) fetching a bid of €110,000 from Rathbran House Stud.

“She's a lovey young mare by a superb broodmare sire, and she's from a very good family,” said John Rowe, manager of the Co Meath-based farm after signing for lot 476, who was offered by Baroda Stud.

Now seven, Recife ran only once in her native Germany, but that outing did result in victory, and her family is fairly liberally sprinkled with black type, including her half-brother, the GI Secretariat S. runner-up Stormy Len (Harlan's Holiday). Her first foal, a Kodiac (GB) colt who has just turned two, was bought by Rabbah Bloodstock for 90,000gns and the mare also has a yearling filly by Churchill (Ire).

With the Group 1 winner White Moonstone (Dynaformer) having been a late withdrawal from the sale, the leading light from the Godolphin draft was lot 565, the Raven's Pass mare Belonging (GB), who was signed for by Charles Shanahan at €90,000. Covered last May by Dark Angel (Ire), the 12-year-old mare has two winners to her name to date and is a half-sister to the stakes winners Desideratum (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) and Poet Laureate (GB) (Highest Honor {Fr}).

Tally-Ho Stud took home another of the Godolphin offerings, lot 580,Panegyric (GB) (Monsun {Ger}), who was offered in foal to Cracksman (GB) and sold for €85,000.

The first foals of the Arc winner Sottsass (Fr) are arriving this season and a mare carrying a member of his second crop, the Listed-placed Bellajeu (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}), was the selection of Ghislain Bozo of Meridian International, with Francois Drion signing the ticket on his behalf  at €57,000. Consigned as lot 546, the 10-year-old hails from a family cultivated by the late Peter Harris at Pendley Farm. Bellajeu's third dam is the G1 Yorkshire Oaks winner Connaught Bridge (GB) (Connaught {GB}), whose descendants include G1 Middle Park S winner Primo Valentino (Ire).

Last through the ring was the supplementary lot 599D, Bridal Knot (Ire), a 5-year-old Walk In The Park (Ire) sister to the multiple Grade 1-winning chaser Might Bite (Ire) (Scorpion {Ire}) who was bought for €90,000 by father and son, both named Seamus Byrne.

Night Of Thunder Colt Steals The Show

KILDARE, Ireland–“A good, good day,” said Goffs group managing director Henry Beeby as he cogitated the results from another solid session of the Goffs February Sale. The all-weanling cast put on a show which resulted in €2,161,800 being added to turnover which has now surpassed that reaped by the previous two-day sale of 2020, while the median remained at a respectable €10,000 and the average was €15,665 for 138 horses sold (76%).

In that transitional stage from being overgrown foals to becoming the nascent racehorses that many will appear to be come autumn, the youngsters passing through the ring on Wednesday represented the class of 2021 and, for many of them, it will have been good practice for their return to official yearling sales later in the year.

That is the intention for the session's top lot (285), bred by a man who was always an extremely welcome presence at the Orby Sale and whose loss will continue to be keenly felt in the years to come. Sheikh Hamdan's legacy of 40 years of breeding through his Shadwell Stud includes many star names throughout those years, and as the operation has downsized significantly since the sheikh's death almost a year ago, many of those bloodlines nurtured over the decades will go on to be influential in the hands of other breeders.

The Night Of Thunder (Ire) weanling that led the day was selected by the husband-and-wife team of Frannie and Niamh Woods, whose sound judgement has been validated on more than once occasion. Signing under their Abbeylands Farm banner, they bought the colt out of Afdhaad (GB) (Nayef) for €125,000. Both his dam and his grand-dam Albaraah (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) passed through the same ring in the Shadwell draft last November, the former selling for €25,000 to Charles Shanahan and the latter to Barronstown Stud for €230,000. It's fair to assume that it is not the last we will hear of this family.

That will certainly be the hope of Frannie Woods, who plans to reoffer the Night Of Thunder colt in the autumn. He said “He's by one of the best sires in Europe and he's a lovely colt. I'm delighted to buy one from Shadwell who have been such great supporters of ours over the year. He'll come back later in the year and we'll be hoping for a bit of luck with the pedigree. The Invincible Spirit [2-year-old half-brother] has gone into training.”

Woods could enjoy an update sooner than that as the mare's first foal Alafdhal (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) holds an entry for a novice stakes at Lingfield on Saturday and is now in the hands of Newmarket trainer Phil McEntee, whose talents remain woefully under-rated and who is currently operating at a 31% strike-rate with his team of all-weather runners.

Another shrewd trainer will eventually mastermind the career of lot 275, a colt inbred 2×3 to Danehill, by the dependable veteran Exceed And Excel (Aus). Finn Kent of Mickley Stud signed for the Ballinafad Stud-bred youngster in partnership with Dave Evans, who enjoyed a memorable 2021 season, notably through the G2 Sandy Lane S. winner Rohaan (Ire) (Mayson {GB}). Evans, who is based in Monmouthshire, already trains the colt's 3-year-old brother Bastogne (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) for Kent's father Richard, the owner of Mickley Stud.

“We have the 3-year-old with Dave and he's rated 88, so we've been watching the family,” said Finn Kent. “It's a family Dave loves and we were keen to buy this colt. He'll go back to Mickley Stud for a while and will then go into training with Dave when the time comes.”

The colt's second strand of Danehill comes through Tiger Hill (Ire), sire of his unraced dam Wavebreak (GB) whose first two runners are both winners. She is in turn a daughter of Group 3 winner Neptune's Bride (Bering) and her half-sister Salacia (Ire) (Echo Of Light {GB}) has given the family a major boost as the dam of group winners King Of Change (GB) (Farhh {GB}) and Century Dream (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}).

The sole representative of Le Havre (Ire) in the catalogue (lot 372), out of the Group 3-placed Endless Light (GB), joined the team of pinhooks by Jamie Railton, who went to €60,000 to secure the colt from the family of dual Grade I winner Megahertz (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) from the Baroda Stud draft.

The top filly of the day was lot 395, the Irish National Stud's daughter of two Group 1 winners in Decorated Knight (GB) and Gilt Edge Girl (GB) (Monsieur Bond {Ire}).

The latter, winner of the Prix de l'Abbaye for Clive Cox, is the dam of Listed winner Time's Arrow (Ire) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}). Her current 2-year-old from the first crop of Saxon Warrior (Jpn) was bought for €270,000 at the Orby Sale by MV Magnier and is in training at Ballydoyle. Her yearling filly was signed for by Hugo Merry for €62,000.

Another of the leading fillies of the day was consigned by Davey Stack's Coolagown Stud and represented the family of last season's dual Group 1-winning juvenile Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}). Lot 221 is from the first crop of Ballyhane Stud's Soldier's Call (GB) and was bought by Mags O'Toole for €45,000. Offered by Stack on behalf of breeder Joli Racing, she is a half-sister to Perfect Power's dam Sagely (Ire) (Frozen Power {Ire}), while the further family includes Arc winner Sagamix (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}) and two new stallions on the scene for 2022, the Galileo (Ire) brothers Japan (GB) and Mogul (GB).

The final day of the Goffs February Sale, featuring breeding stock, gets underway on Thursday at 10am.
