Baaeed To Command 80k For Shadwell In First Season

The highest-rated turf horse in a decade, Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}–Aghareed, by Kingmambo), will stand for £80,000  in his first season at Shadwell's Nunnery Stud in 2023. The winner of 10 of his 11 starts, including six consecutive Group 1s, he is joined under the Shadwell banner by G1 Sprint Cup hero Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire})–Pardoven {Ire}, by Clodovil {Ire}), who will also be standing his first season next year, at €15,000.

Stephen Collins, European bloodstock manager for Shadwell, said, “Baaeed's fee reflects his current status as the champion turf horse in the world for 2022 and also his impeccable race record and superb pedigree, being a direct descendant of Height Of Fashion (Fr), the dam of top-class performers Nashwan, Nayef and Unfuwain.

“The 135-rated Baaeed is a wonderful addition to the Shadwell stallion roster and we have been inundated with enquiries for nominations. We have been overwhelmed with the response from breeders from all over Europe and further a-field.”

Rated 121, Minzaal will stand at Shadwell's Irish base, Derrinstown Stud in Co Kildare.

Collins said, “At a fee of €15,000, we have no doubt that Minzaal will prove very popular with breeders. He's a strong, good-looking individual who was a very high-class 2-year-old and developed into an exceptional older sprinter, winning the Sprint Cup in devastating style. His immense talent combined with his superb attitude will stand him in very good stead for what we firmly believe will be an equally successful stallion career.”

The Nunnery Stud roster also contains crack miler Mohaather (GB), whose fee remains unchanged at £15,000 while first-season sire Tasleet (GB)'s fee has risen to £6,000 (Jan. 1, special live foal) from £5,000 in 2022. Bradsell (GB) (Tasleet {GB}) captured the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot. Eqtidaar (Ire)'s fee remains at £5,000.

Collins added, “The forthcoming sales will see Mohaather's first foals sell at public auction, which will be exciting for us all. We have a number of very nice foals by him on the farm and very much look forward to seeing how his other progeny are received in the sales ring over the coming weeks.

“Tasleet's yearlings sold well at public auctions throughout the autumn, which is no surprise given Bradsell's success in the Coventry Stakes and other eye-catching performances from the sire's progeny in 2022. Eqtidaar's first yearlings through the ring have also been making their mark with his progeny realising up to 12 times his stud fee.”

Also based at Derrinstown Stud is Awtaad (Ire), whose fee has been kept unchanged at €5,000. Former Derrinstown stalwart Tamayuz (GB) has been pensioned, and former Derrinstown Stud resident King Of Change (GB) has been moved to Micheal Orlandi's Starfield Stud in Co Westmeath for the 2023 breeding season.

Shadwell Stud To Conduct Full Review Of Global Operations

The global racing and breeding enterprise – the vision of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who passed away in March this year – announces that it is undertaking a full review of all its activities that will result in important changes for the business.

As a result, its operations in the U.K., Ireland and the U.S. will contract, with a focus on quality and competition at the highest level of the sport with horses of the calibre of Baaeed and Malathaat.

A number of horses in training and homebred yearlings will be sold this autumn, while its broodmare band will be further reduced through dispersals at key auctions over the coming months.

The family wish to stress that they remain extremely passionate about the sport and through the chairmanship of Sheikha Hissa, herself an accomplished horsewoman, are committed to ensuring that their father's legacy endures for many years to come. They intend to retain a significant number of homebred foals and will continue their global stallion operations.

Chris Kennard, the U.K. director of Shadwell Estate Company Ltd, said: “As part of a long-term plan for Shadwell to operate on a sustainable footing, a recent decision has been made to contract the size of the global business. This will involve the imminent sale of a substantial number of horses – including yearlings, horses in training and breeding stock, and in due course, a reorganization of each of the worldwide operations.”

European Champion, Breeders’ Cup Classic Runner Up Sakhee Euthanized At 24

Shadwell legend Sakhee, crowned Europe's champion older horse in 2001, was put down on Friday due to the infirmities of old age. He was 24.

Sakhee was bred by the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and was the best performer sired by Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner Bahri. He was one of eight winners out of the Sadler's Wells mare Thawakib, whose biggest success came in the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot.

After being born and raised at Sheikh Hamdan's Shadwell Farm in Kentucky, it was only fitting that Sakhee was sent to Arundel to be trained by John Dunlop, as he had overseen the careers of both Bahri and Thawakib.

Sakhee scored in two of his three starts at two, but it was during his classic season at three that he really began to thrive.

Victories in the G3 Classic Trial at Sandown and G2 Dante Stakes at York were followed by an agonizing second-place finish in the Derby, in which he was headed in the final 150 yards by Sinndar.

Sakhee was transferred to the yard of Saeed bin Suroor to carry the colors of Godolphin at four. He developed into Europe's leading middle-distance horse with a pair of top-flight wins in the Juddmonte International, in which he beat Grandera by seven lengths, and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, in which he blitzed his rivals who included Aquarelliste, Golan and Milan. His margin of success at Paris was an impressive six lengths.

He concluded his 3-year-old campaign at Belmont Park in the Breeders' Cup Classic and after a ding-dong battle with Tiznow in the home stretch, he was denied by just a nose to finish second.

Sakhee made a winning reappearance at Nad Al Sheba at five before finishing third to Street Cry in the Dubai World Cup. He ended his career that season having amassed total prize-money of £2,207,096.

Sakhee was retired to Nunnery Stud for the 2003 breeding season.

Although he did not replicate his brilliance on the racecourse in the breeding shed, he still sired several leading lights headed by Sakhee's Secret, whose biggest triumph came in the G1 July Cup, in which he beat Dutch Art by half a length under a power-packed ride from Steve Drowne.

He was also responsible for Luca Cumani's globetrotting Group 1 winner Presvis, whose career yielded more than £4 million in prize-money, and the Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero Tin Horse.

Sakhee had been living out a happy retirement at Nunnery Stud since his retirement from breeding at the end of 2016. He will be much missed by everyone in the Shadwell operation.
