Baaeed Is Unmatched in Newbury’s G1 Lockinge

Unbeaten through six starts after annexing last October's G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot, Shadwell Estate Company's 4-year-old homebred and G1 Prix du Moulin hero Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}–Aghareed, by Kingmambo) launched his quest for superstardom by putting a stellar field to the sword in Saturday's G1 Al Shaqab Lockinge S. at Newbury. Europe's top miler of 2021, and the world's joint-highest alongside Hong Kong's immovable force Golden Sixty (Aus) (Medaglia d'Oro), made relentless progression throughout his perfect sophomore campaign and continued in similar vein to plunder Britain's first elite-level contest of the season for older horses by daylight in scarcely believable fashion. The April-foaled bay was considered by the betting market to be almost unbeatable and hit the lids as the 4-9 favourite. Comfortable and in a smooth rhythm behind the leaders racing fourth until beyond halfway, he was angled into an open lane with 2 1/2 furlongs remaining and left toiling rivals in his wake once shaken up for control approaching the final eighth, powering clear in highly impressive style to win as champions do by 3 1/4 lengths from Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) was best of the remainder, 1 3/4 lengths adrift, and earned his first Group 1 black type at the fifth attempt.

Success brought a second renewal for both Shadwell and Jim Crowley, who teamed up with Mustashry (GB) (Tamayuz {GB}) in 2019, but it was a first for William Haggas hot on the hooves of a banner week at York's May festival. Baaeed is now set to head to the Knavesmire himself, via Royal Ascot's G1 Queen Anne S., for a first go at 10 furlongs in August's G1 Juddmonte International. The great Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) inhaled both contests in 2012, taking in a G1 Sussex S. along the way.

“He is an absolute pleasure to ride and very straightforward,” beamed Crowley. “Everything went smoothly and it was like clockwork. There was not a lot of pace in the race, but he has such a turn of foot and, if they had gone quicker, it probably would have helped him. He is the most beautifully-bred horse and is everything you want in a racehorse. Nothing seems to faze him and he doesn't appear to have any weaknesses. I can't think of one. He is really bright, he has gears, he relaxes and he stays the mile extremely well. He has got a turn of foot and you couldn't ask for more. You would imagine the Juddmonte International would be tailor-made for him.”

Haggas added, “I have to say I have never been more nervous before a race than I was today. There was a bit of pressure, because all you fellows keep writing nice things about him, but he did it nicely today. I would not go as far as to say he is the best horse in the world–that is the sort of thing others might say–but he has done very well. It was a strongish field, there was a Classic winner in there and two fillies who were very useful last year, so he has done really well. If we step up to a mile-and-a-quarter, and if he stays fit and healthy, we will go for the Juddmonte.”

For long-time Sheikh Hamdan confidant Angus Gold, it was a win of high significance for Shadwell. “You can't underestimate how important he is, he's a massive asset for the operation,” he said. “Since Sheikh Hamdan died we're a smaller operation, as everyone knows, so to get a horse of this class is absolutely fantastic for the family and everyone in Dubai. He worked brilliantly, with two good horses, at Chelmsford the other day and you want to see them do it on their first run back. You are hopeful, obviously, but you never quite know until you see them on the track. For me, and in my experience, it is rare to get a horse of his ability and his temperament. He's just the most charming horse with great character, so he makes everybody's job easy. He's very straightforward.” Allowing himself a moment of reflection, Gold continued, “Sheikh Hamdan adored his breeding and his pedigrees. He loved looking into them and he'd have been thrilled to come up with a horse from that [Height of Fashion] family, most of whom stay well.” Looking ahead, he added, “I'm sure Baaeed will go further if we want to, but I don't think we need to straight away. He's still got the speed for a mile, so we'll stick at that for the time being. The obvious race is the Queen Anne, but I'd love to see him go up to the Juddmonte [International at York] and the [G1] Champion [S. at Ascot]. That would be the perfect way to showcase his versatility.”

Baaeed, the fifth of eight foals, is one of three scorers out of Listed Prix de Liancourt victrix Aghareed (Kingmambo), herself a daughter of MGISW US champion Lahudood (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}). Lahudood, in turn, is a granddaughter of Listed Cheshire Oaks runner-up Bashayer (Mr. Prospector), herself one of seven black-type performers out of MGSW blue hen Height of Fashion (Fr) (Bustino {GB}). Bashayer, runner-up in the Listed Cheshire Oaks, is a full-sister to dual stakes victrix Sarayir, herself the dam of three stakes winners headed by the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. heroine Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway). Wijdan, another full-sister to Bashayer, ran second in the Listed Pretty Polly S. and is the dam of GII New York S. winner Makderah (Ire) (Danehill) and G2 Premio Ribot victrix Oriental Fashion (Ire) (Marju {Ire}). Bashayer is also kin to five black-type winners headed by MG1SW sires Nashwan (Blushing Groom {Fr}) and Nayef (Gulch). Baaeed is a full-brother to MGSW G2 Dubai City of Gold winner Hukum (Ire) and a half to the hitherto unraced 2-year-old colt Naqeeb (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and a yearling colt by Night of Thunder (Ire).

Rogue Millennium Will Be Supplemented to The Oaks

Rogue Millennium (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who won the May 7 Listed SBK Oaks Trial Fillies' S., will be supplemented to the G1 Cazoo Oaks on June 3, trainer Tom Clover confirmed. The daughter of Group 3 winner Hawaafez (GB) (Nayef) was bred by the late Sheikh Hamdan's Shadwell Estate Company and the owners The Rogues Gallery will pay the £30,000 supplementary entry fee required to contest the Epsom Downs showpiece. The filly, purchased for only 35,000gns out of the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in 2021, won at Wetherby on debut last month.

Clover said, “Rogue Millennium is a lovely filly that deserves her chance to be in the Oaks and it is now very much the plan to go to Epsom. We discussed it several times and both the owners and I are keen to go there.

“For any young trainer to have a horse like her bred by Sheikh Hamdan going for the Oaks is very special. Sheikh Hamdan is part of the sport's heritage and he had so many successes with my late father-in-law Michael Jarvis including winning the Oaks with Eswarah (GB) (Unfuwain) [in 2005].

“To have the chance to train a filly for the Oaks from the same place Sheikh Hamdan won the race with my late father-in-law Michael Jarvis is really exciting.

“I don't believe we are going there simply to have a runner but because we have a chance. I hope she can make both us and The Rogues Gallery team proud.”

Added Clover, “Having a runner in a Classic is something new to us and now the focus is on getting the filly there in the best possible shape we can. It is exciting but we just want a smooth run.”

Dubawi’s Rogue Millennium Pounces Late For Oaks Trial Success

The Rogues Gallery's Rogue Millennium (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Hawaafez {GB}, by Nayef), who was plucked from the Shadwell operation for 35,000gns as an unraced 2-year-old at last year's Tattersalls December Mares sale, graduated over 10 furlongs in an Apr. 24 Wetherby maiden and punched her ticket to Epsom's June 3 G1 Cazoo Oaks with a narrow victory in Saturday's Listed SBK Oaks Trial at Lingfield. The February-foaled bay has yet to be entered for next month's Classic and connections are keen to stump up the £30,000 supplementary fee for the privilege. Settled off the pace in sixth for the most part, the 15-2 chance was coaxed forward once into the home straight and was unrelenting under a drive inside the final quarter mile to nail the pacesetting Mystic Wells (Kitten's Joy) by a head on the line for a career high. Coolmore and Westerberg's 5-6 favorite Emily Dickinson (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) raced prominently and threatened in the straight, but faded late to finish fifth.

“She's by the right sire and we decided, before coming here, that if she won she would be added to the Oaks field,” explained trainer Tom Clover. “She's still green and has improved with each piece of work. I actually feel a little guilty about asking her to go to Epsom, but we have to go. She's just flourished and I hope she can continue to progress. The owners [Rogues Gallery] are great sporting people, who absolutely adore it. Whether it's an owners' event or a day trip to watch the horses, their enthusiasm is boundless.” Winning rider Jack Mitchell added, “She was rolling about a bit coming down the hill, but once she levelled out she was strong right the way to the line.”

Rogue Millennium becomes the first black-type winner for G3 Cumberland Lodge S. victrix Hawaafez (GB) (Nayef), herself the leading performer bred from Merayaat (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}). Merayaat's second dam Wedding Bouquet (Ire) (Kings Lake) scored twice at pattern-race level, namely the G3 Park S. and GIII Monrovia H., and also ran second in both G1 Phoenix S. and G1 National S. during her juvenile campaign. Wedding Bouquet is kin to G1 Epsom Derby hero Generous (Ire) (Caerleon {GB}) and G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Imagine (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), herself the dam of five pattern-race winners headed by G1 Grand Criterium victor Horatio Nelson (Ire) (Danehill) and G1 Criterium International winner Van Gogh (American Pharoah). Wedding Bouquet is also the granddam of MG1SW distaffer and three-time G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest heroine Moonlight Cloud (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Hawaafez has a 2-year-old filly by Awtaad (Ire) and a yearling filly by Kingman (GB) to come.

Frankel’s Mostahdaf Back With A Win At Sandown

Shadwell Estate Company's 4-year-old colt Mostahdaf (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) endured his only defeat in six prior starts when a badly-hampered 12th of 13 in Royal Ascot's G1 St James's Palace S. last June and went postward as a strong odds-on favourite for Friday's G3 bet365 Gordon Richards S. at Sandown coming back off a win in October's G3 Darley S. at Newmarket. It was not all plain sailing in the three-runner affair and he was made to earn his corn by King Power Racing's G3 Rose of Lancaster S. winner Foxes Tales (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). Mostahdaf occupied the two slot as Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's G2 Superlative S. victor Juan Elcano (GB) (Frankel {GB}) set the tone from flagfall. Inching ever closer in the straight, the 1-2 lock came under pressure to challenge between both opponents approaching the quarter-mile marker and ran on strongly once subduing the persistent late threat of Foxes Tales by 2 1/2 lengths to double his pattern-race tally in ultimately comfortable fashion.

“He ran well throughout last season,” said Thady Gosden. “The St James's Palace didn't quite go according to plan, but we stepped him up to a mile-and-quarter here for the first time and he stayed it quite well. He won over nine furlongs last year, it is a stiff mile-and-quarter and the ground is riding a little bit dead at the moment, but he stayed well and it was a competitive enough race. There were three horses, but they are three solid horses and he did well. It can always be a bit trappy with three runners, but they went a fairly solid clip the whole way and he put up a good fight when he had to. We are hopeful he will come on for that run and the [G1] Prince of Wales's [at Royal Ascot] or a [G3] Brigadier Gerard [back here] will come under consideration.”

Mostahdaf, the fifth of seven foals, is one of four scorers out of Listed Garnet S. victrix Handassa (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), herself a half-sister to GSW GI Frank E Kilroe Mile third Desert Stone (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and G3 Earl of Sefton S. third Euginio (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). The March-foaled homebred is full to a yearling colt and a half-brother to G1 Falmouth S. and G1 Sun Chariot S. heroine Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the hitherto unraced 2-year-old colt Mostabshir (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}). His second dam Starstone (GB) (Diktat {GB}) is an unraced half-sister to G1SW sires Pastoral Pursuits (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}) and Goodricke (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}).
