Setback Derails Shuwari’s Guineas Plans

Listed winner Shuwari (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) has sustained a setback that rules her out of the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas, trainer Ollie Sangster announced on Thursday. Second in the G2 Rockfel S. in September and the G1 Fillies' Mile a month later, the chestnut had reportedly strengthened up over the winter.

“She's had a setback and there will be no Guineas,” said Sangster of the filly, who is owned by his mother Lucy and the Ballylinch Partnership. “She was training great and had wintered well. She had grown and strengthened up and her work had been very good this spring. She was in very good shape and we were looking forward to it [the Guineas].

“I'm not sure on a timescale, we will just have to see how the rehab goes in the next few weeks and then we will have a better guide on it.”

Sangster also provided an update on Wathnan Racing's Per Contra (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}), who is two-for-three. After winning a Chepstow maiden last July, the colt made his first start in his new colours when running out a 4 3/4-length winner in a Ffos Las novice. He most recently ran fifth in the G3 Autumn S. in October.

“He's in good form, he's going galloping tomorrow and Monday and then we will begin plotting a bit of a route for him,” added Sangster.

“I think he will go up in trip this year. I don't think he will be a big stayer but he will go up to 10 furlongs anyway. I think he is off quite a nice mark, so we will see.”

Setback Puts Opera Singer’s Guineas Challenge in Doubt

Opera Singer (Justify), winner of the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac and winter favourite for the Qipco 1,000 Guineas, may miss the first Classic of the season after meeting with a setback in training. Her trainer Aidan O'Brien confirmed the news in an interview on Racing TV.

He said, “Opera Singer is a bit behind. She had a little setback, she had two weeks easy and might not make the English Guineas. She is likely to start in the Irish Guineas and we don't want to force her.”

Bred by the late Evie Stockwell, Opera Singer is a half-sister to the Group/Grade 1 winners Brave Anna and Hit It A Bomb, both by War Front. The daughter of Liscanna (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) won three of her five starts at two, culminating in her top-level triumph in Paris at the Arc meeting. Prior to that she had beaten Monday's G3 Park Express S. winner Brilliant (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) in the G3 Newtown Anner Stud Irish EBF S. at the Curragh.

Her stable-mate Ylang Ylang (GB) (Frankel {GB}), winner of the G1 Fillies' Mile, has now replaced Opera Singer at the head of the betting for the 1,000 Guineas on Sunday, May 5.

Hong Kong Star Golden Sixty Rules Out Of Stewards’ Cup With A Setback

Hong Kong's dual Horse of the Year Golden Sixty (Aus) (Medaglia d'Oro) has been removed from consideration for the G1 Stewards' Cup on Jan. 21 after sustained a minor injury to his left front leg.

A two-time winner of that prize in 2021 and 2023, the 8-year-old gelding will face a restricted workout schedule for the next three to four weeks. Owned by Stanley Chan Ka Leung, the bay has won 10 Group 1s in Hong Kong.

“We found, the day before yesterday [Wednesday] in the morning, a little bit of filling and a little bit of heat [in his front left leg],” said trainer Francis Lui. “The vets did a check, a scan and an MRI–there's nothing serious, but they sent a report to England.

“It's very slight but, of course, for the safety side, we don't want to push him because the race is only three weeks' time. The vets said we can give him light trotting for three or four weeks and progressively we can check on him. The issue is just inside the pastern on his front left leg.”

Breeders’ Cup Winner Yibir Sustains Setback And Will Not Travel Stateside

Last year's Breeders' Cup hero Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) will not travel Stateside for his next start, after meeting with a setback, Godolphin announced via Twitter. The Charlie Appleby trainee ran out a half-length winner of the GI Breeders' Cup Turf in November and narrowly reported home second in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan in March. Returned to the country of his birth, he filled that position again in the G2 Jockey Club S. at Newmarket at the end of April and was third in the GI Man o' War S. back in New York on May 14. His latest effort was a 2 1/4-length win in the G2 Princess Of Wales's S. at Newmarket on July 7, and he had been pointing to the GI Sword Dancer S. at Saratoga on Aug. 27.

“Unfortunately, Yibir has met with a slight setback and will no longer be heading to the US for his next intended start,” Godolphin tweeted on Saturday morning.
