Tapit Trice Tries Two Turns In Tampa Bay Derby

Trainer Todd Pletcher has unsaddled the winner of the GIII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby a record five times–no one else has more than two to their credit–and he stands a fair chance to make it a half-dozen Saturday afternoon when he sends out the two favorites on the morning line.

Pegged at odds of 8-5 is Whisper Hill Farm's 'TDN Rising Star' Tapit Trice (Tapit), who will attempt to provide his sire with a fourth winner of the race since in its last 10 runnings (Ring Weekend, 2014; the Pletcher-conditioned Tapwrit, 2017; and Tacitus, 2019). A $1.3-million Keeneland September yearling, the gray colt has made each of his three career starts to date over a one-turn mile, and he could scarcely have been more impressive in running away from his surprisingly preferred stablemate Shesterkin (Violence) by some eight lengths in a Feb. 4 Gulfstream allowance.

“He's a colt we've had high hopes for all along,” said Pletcher following that test. “The exciting thing about him is the further he goes, the better he'll get.”

Should those words prove correct, they'll all be running for minor awards, as Tapit Trice owns the two best Beyer Speed Figures in the field, including a 92 last time that towers over his rivals.

Shesterkin is also a candidate to appreciate extra real estate, as his dam Freedom Star (Street Cry {Ire}) was a five-time winner at a distance of ground, including the 2010 GIII Azeri S.

While GIII Sam F. Davis S. hero Litigate (Blame) is passing on a return to Oldsmar in favor of the GII Louisiana Derby in two weeks' time, those that finished behind him that day are not without their chances. Groveland (Street Sense) rallied up the rail after encountering a bit of traffic to round out the Davis exacta ahead of Classic Car Wash (Noble Bird), who came from far back to photo the comebacking Classic Legacy (Into Mischief) out of third. The latter, a homebred half-brother to MGISW Art Collector (Bernardini), is intriguing at a price with a race under his belt.

'Justify'-able Optimism In Florida Oaks

The Pletcher barn also has claims in the afternoon's co-featured event, the GIII Florida Oaks. Don Alberto's Alpha Bella (Justify) graduated in her first start on the turf down at Gulfstream Dec. 11 and was relegated to second last time behind a rabbit-out-of-the-hat victory by her stablemate Cairo Consort (Cairo Prince) in the GIII Sweetest Chant S. three races after Tapit Trice's romp. Alpha Bella is a half-sister to Andina del Sur (Giant's Causeway), who caused a 13-1 upset in this race for trainer Tom Albertrani in 2018 after finishing third in the Sweetest Chant.

Chad Brown has won the last two runnings of the Oaks and three overall and is represented by Klaravich Stables' morning-line favorite Free Look (Tapit), runner-up in the GII Miss Grillo S. at Aqueduct ahead of an even fifth in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in November.

Tampa also stages the 3-year-old turf colts' counterpart, the Columbia S., the GII Hillsborough S. and the GIII Challenger S.

Azeri Lures A Pair Of Top-Level Winners

Saturday's GII Azeri S., a final course-and-distance prep for next month's GI Apple Blossom H., has attracted a cracking field of eight dirt distaffers, led by returning Grade I winners Clairiere (Curlin) and Secret Oath (Arrogate).

Save for an off day when down the field in last year's GI Personal Ensign S., Stonestreet Stables' Clairiere was a model of consistency in 2022, with a record of 3-1-1 from her five other runs, including a thrilling defeat of champion Malathaat (Curlin) in the GI Ogden Phipps S. in June. The homebred took down that one's colors yet again in the GII Shuvee S. the following month, but had to settle for third to Malathaat in a memorable renewal of the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff.

Reigning GI Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Oath is perfect in three starts against her own sex over the Oaklawn main track, having annexed the Martha Washington S. and GIII Honeybee S. ahead of a third in the GI Arkansas Derby. The chestnut was soundly defeated by Eclipse Award winner Nest (Curlin) in the GI CCA Oaks and GI Alabama S. and led into the final eighth of a mile in the Distaff before weakening into fifth.

Interstatedaydream (Classic Empire) won last year's GII Black-Eyed Susan S. and GIII Indiana Oaks, but makes her first start since being upset in the Aug. 23 Cathryn Sophia S. at Parx.

Fun To Dream Goes For Five Straight In Beholder

Cal-bred Fun to Dream (Arrogate) is a deserving favorite heading into Saturday's GI Beholder Mile S. at Santa Anita, but has some questions to answer in what is clearly her stiffest test to date. An allowance winner in her only effort going long last October, she stretches out off three consecutive scores at seven furlongs, having bested the reopposing Awake At Midnyte (Nyquist) in the GI La Brea S. Dec. 26 and GII Santa Monica S. Feb. 4.

Standing in her way is Stonestreet's Pauline's Pearl (Tapit), already proven at the Grade I level after upsetting Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil) in the La Troienne S. last May. The gray resumed from a near seven-month absence with a smooth success in the GIII Houston Ladies' Classic Jan. 28.

A Mo Reay (Uncle Mo) is unbeaten in two starts since being purchased for $400,000 at Fasig-Tipton November and swerves the Azeri despite winning Oaklawn's GIII Bayakoa S. Feb. 4.

Forbidden Kingdom (American Pharoah) looms the one to beat in Saturday's GIII San Carlos S. at the Great Race Place, while 'TDN Rising Star' Frank's Rockette (Into Mischief) looks a handful in the GIII Hurricane Bertie S. at Gulfstream.

Wednesday’s Breeders’ Cup Report: Early Morning Flight

LEXINGTON, KY – DL689 wasn't the only flight taking off shortly after 6:00 a.m. in Lexington on a brisk Wednesday morning.

Just as that Atlanta-bound, Delta aircraft loudly announced its presence across the way at Blue Grass Airport–you really couldn't have scripted it any better–unbeaten superstar Flightline (Tapit) was one of the first horses to train as the Keeneland main track opened for business beneath the lights.

Under a snug hold and plenty eager to do more, the 3-5 GI Breeders' Cup Classic morning-line favorite was every bit as advertised, rolling down the stretch with beautiful strides beneath Juan Leyva before a good-sized and early rising crowd.

More on the sensational job that the former Breeders' Cup winning-jockey turned John Sadler assistant has done getting the record-setting GI Pacific Classic winner to settle during training hours in our loaded Saturday preview edition.

Fellow contenders for the $6-million centerpiece Life Is Good (Into Mischief) and Olympiad (Speightstown) immediately caught the eye as did the very live GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile-bound Laurel River (Into Mischief) and overwhelming GI Breeders' Cup Sprint favorite Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music).

Both GI Kentucky Derby upsetter Rich Strike (Keen Ice) and GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Secret Oath (Arrogate) were out strutting their stuff in the pre-dawn hours as the mercury hovered in the high 40s. Believe it or not, it's been eight years now since both winners of the two spring Classics at Churchill Downs have lined up in the Breeders' Cup Classic and GI Breeders' Cup Distaff.

Queen's Plate winner Moira (Ghostzapper) toured the purpled-out paddock during the renovation break beneath a dense cloud cover just before daybreak.

Just as he did approaching the first Saturday in May, leading champion 3-year-old candidate Epicenter (Not This Time) couldn't have looked any better during his 1 1/2-mile gallop over the freshly manicured surface just after 8:00 a.m.

With 2020 GI Breeders' Cup Mile winner Order of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) front and center, the 'Aidan O'Brien Army' of seven marched by the grandstand single file along the outer rail as the boss looked on from the backstretch.

After a gate schooling session broadcasted live on FanDuel TV's terrific onsite 'Breakfast at the Breeders' Cup' coverage, 'Future Stars Friday' headliner Cave Rock (Arrogate)–is he the most-likeliest winner on the weekend?–got down to business with an easy gallop as training hours began to wind down.

“I’d Like to Keep Training Her,” D. Wayne Lukas on Night of the Stars-Bound Secret Oath

Forty years after his first GI Kentucky Oaks win, D. Wayne Lukas relished his fifth appearance in that winner's circle this year alongside a special filly named Secret Oath (Arrogate – Absinthe Minded, by Quiet American).

“We've celebrated in that winner's circle a number of times already, but this one was a little bit better though, because when you're an old man you often wonder if you're going to get another one–one of those really special ones,” explained Lukas.

The Hall of Fame conditioner known as “The Coach” has a detailed recollection of what transpired immediately after the race on the first Friday in May this year.

As soon as Secret Oath crossed the wire, Lukas led her dazed owners Rob and Stacy Mitchell to the winner's circle. Meanwhile camera crews bolted about frantically to document such an important piece of history and a long line of Lukas's former pupils came forward to congratulate the legendary trainer. Then as soon as the photo was taken, Secret Oath made it known that she had no intention of wearing lilies after her hard-fought win and the garland was promptly removed.

It was chaotic, to say the least, but of course that's how it should be after such a victory.

“It was wild, just like it always is for the Derby or the Oaks,” Lukas said with a knowing smile. “Everybody loses their composure. It was a special day for me to put Rob and Stacy in the winner's circle and let them enjoy something that I had experienced before. They've really tried to raise one of this caliber and sure enough, they got it done.”

A second-generation homebred for the Mitchells' Briland Farm, Secret Oath has taken her owners on the ride of lifetime. In her eight starts this year, the gritty filly has been in the money in all but one of those contest.

After breaking her maiden at two, she began her sophomore season with two straight scores in the Martha Washington S. and GIII Honeybee S. and then ran third in the GI Arkansas Derby–a race that Lukas still considers a definite win had she gotten a different ride. After her Oaks victory, the filly ran a credible fourth in the GI Preakness S. and then placed in three Grade I contests within her own division.

“For the Mitchells, their heart says to keep her forever, but their business sense says that this is a valuable piece of property and whatever she brings is life changing in a lot of ways,” Lukas explained. “You've got to always keep a business sense because it's so easy to fall in love with these horses. I mean, the whole barn is in love with this one. I just hope the next people who get her enjoy her as much as we have and are as successful as we have been, both economically and emotionally.”

Secret Oath will sell as Hip 231 on the 'Night of the Stars' with the Bluewater Sales consignment. Fasig-Tipton's Boyd Browning said that the buyer of the uniquely-colored chestnut will be taking home a piece of history.

“It's unusual when you have the opportunity to buy the current Kentucky Oaks winner and Secret Oath provides buyers around the world an exceptional opportunity this November,” Browning said. “We all watched the Kentucky Oaks this year.  I think when we look back in history we're going to say it was a tremendous group of fillies, with champion Echo Zulu (Gun Runner) and Nest (Curlin), and Secret Oath defeated them in a very impressive fashion. She's a star on the racetrack and she's a star in the making as a broodmare prospect somewhere down the line.”

Another significant element of Secret Oath's story is that the filly was the first Grade I winner for the late Arrogate, whose abilities as a sire may just now be coming to the limelight (read more on that here).

“You've got what is almost like a historic pedigree here and the opportunities that she presents from a breeding standpoint are really unlimited,” Browning said. “Secret Oath is also out of a mare by Quiet American, who has had a tremendous impact on so many pedigrees of top-class horses that we've seen in the last 25 years.”

Lukas trained Secret Oath's dam, Absinthe Minded, and won several stakes contests with the Briland Farm homebred. The horseman said he believes that Secret Oath has all the potential to follow in her dam's success as a producer.

“The pedigree is there and things should fall into place, but let's not think that far ahead,” said Lukas with a wry grin. “Let's just stay in the moment.”

At the moment, Secret Oath is putting in her final preps for the Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs. She put in an eye-catching work there on Monday, going five furlongs in a blazing 58.80 over a fast track as she prepares for a rematch with rival Nest, who she had to settle for second behind in her last two outings against the Curlin filly in the GI Coaching Club American Oaks and GI Alabama S.

“Nest beat us fair and square, but we've gotten a lot out of that,” Lukas said. “Since then she has had a little break and has put on weight and filled out.  I think she looks better now than she has at any time. To win at Keeneland would be special, but they've all been special. I've had a few successful days in the Breeders Cup' and this one will be very special too, especially when you're 87.”

As Breeders' Cup week approaches, Lukas is confident in his trainee, who has now amassed earnings of over $1.7 million.

Asked what makes Secret Oath a great athlete, he responded, “Her efficiency of motion and her ability to accelerate. She can break their hearts in four strides.”

“One thing about Secret Oath is that she's a ham,” he added. “She will stand and look with her ears locked forward and pose like that for 15 or 20 minutes. You can take her in front of any crowd and into any paddock. Her temperament and her personality really compliment her ability to run.”

The Secret Oath-D. Wayne Lukas duo has been an easy one to cheer for this year and will undoubtedly be a focal point going into Breeders' Cup week.

“It's been a remarkable story to watch the development of Secret Oath as a racehorse and see Wayne back in the limelight as he has had the opportunity to enjoy and train such an exceptional filly,” Browning said. “I think that in many ways, Wayne Lukas has been one of the most influential people in the Thoroughbred sales business. His passion for the game and for his horses is remarkable. He's someone that I admire and respect very much.”

He continued, “I mean, you consider that Wayne is 87 years old and he's on the pony every morning. Try to beat him to the racetrack; it's virtually impossible to do. It's been really neat to watch the success that he's had with Secret Oath so far and hopefully there's more in their future.”

Once the Breeders' Cup has concluded and as Secret Oath prepares to go through the ring at the 'Night of the Stars' Sale, there is one message that Lukas hopes to get across to buyers.

“The only thing that I'd like to change about the whole thing is that if someone buys her, bring her back,” he said. “She's comfortable in her own stall. She's very sound and very efficient. I'd like to keep training her.”
