Keeneland Supplements 69 Horses to January Horses of All Ages Sale

A total of 69 horses–including Seasons (Tapit), a Grade I-placed daughter of Tapit and millionaire Winter Memories El Prado (Ire)–have been supplemented to the 2023 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale. The auction will cover four sessions from Jan. 9-12.

Additional supplements will be considered until sale date.

Seasons, a 4-year-old filly, is cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect and consigned by Darby Dan Farm, agent.

Other supplements to Book 1 of the January Sale include:

Quick (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire}), a Grade III winner who is carrying her first foal by Medaglia d'Oro. Quick is consigned by Vinery Sales, agent.

A yearling filly from the first crop of GI Belmont S. winner Tiz the Law who is a half-sister to Grade I winner Avenge (War Front) and to Liguria (War Front), winner of the Dec. 3 GIII Jimmy Durante at Del Mar. Out of Lerici (Woodman), she is consigned by Gainesway, agent.

Bold Connection (Uncle Mo), a 2-year-old stakes-placed half-sister to Grade I winner Sweet Loretta (Tapit). Bold Connection is consigned as a racing or broodmare prospect by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.

Additional supplements include yearlings by such stallions as Justify, McKinzie, Not This Time, Twirling Candy and Vekoma and mares in foal to stallions including Constitution, Ghostzapper, Good Magic, Justify, Liam's Map, Maclean's Music, Not This Time and Yaupon.

With these supplements, the total number of horses cataloged to the January Sale is 1,578.

Small, But Mighty, Shuvee Field Leads Sunday Graded Action

A lack of competitors doesn't always translate to a lack of competition and the GII Shuvee S. at Saratoga is a case in point, with an abbreviated field of four featuring a pair of titans. Fellow Curlin daughters Clairiere and Malathaat will bring their rivalry to round six in the 1 1/8-mile contest at the Spa; the latter coming out on the better end on four prior occasions. Malathaat will be breaking from the gate sporting blinkers for the first time in her career, likely intended to combat her tendency to wait on her competition, and she has been working with the new equipment in the mornings as well.

Todd Pletcher will be shooting for his fifth victory in this event (Curalina-2016, Stopchargingmaria-2015, Authenticity-2013, Awesome Maria-2011) should their match up here return in her favor, tying his record with the legendary H. Allen Jerkens for most Shuvee wins as conditioner. Steven Asmussen looks to add his name to the race's annuals for the first time after most recently saddling She's a Julie (Elusive Quality) to a third place finish in 2019. Both Clairiere and Malathaat ran career high Beyers of 106 last out in the GI Ogden Phipps, and are the horses to beat here, nearly guaranteeing that history of some kind will be made on Spa Sunday.

To their inside, and hoping to play spoiler, is the aptly named Crazy Beautiful (Liam's Map) for trainer Kenny McPeek, who's riding into the race on the back of a fruitful summer season. The grey has faced Malathaat on three occasions and never been in winning contention in any of those races, but she's the third millionaire in this field, and those purses didn't come without effort. A winner of Turfway Park's Apr. 2 Latonia S. over the synthetic and second last out June 25 in the Lady Jaqueline S. at Thistledown behind MGISP Army Wife (Declaration of War), Crazy Beautiful will be trying for her eighth lifetime win here. Former $40,000 claimer Exotic West (Hard Spun) rounds the field from the rail and faces a tall task having never run a number anywhere close to the divisional leaders on her outside.

'Magic' in Del Mar's Cougar II Marathon
MyRacehorse and Spendthrift Farm's GISP Tizamagician (Tiznow) makes his 5-year-old bow while trying to win the GIII Cougar II S. for the second year in a row where the 'Turf Meets the Surf.' Super consistent Dicey Mo Chara (GB) (Adaay {Ire}) will try to make his first dirt marathon a winning one for his eagle-eyed connections of Red Baron's Barn LLC and Rancho Temescal LLC and conditioner Leonard Powell.

Salty Graded Fields North of the Border
It's Kentucky-vs-European-breds in the turfy GII Dance Smartly S. at 1 1/16-miles at Woodbine. The G1SP Fev Rover (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}), a 695,000gns purchase by Tracy Farmer from last year's Tattersalls December Mares Sale, heads the field carrying solid European form including two black-type wins as a juvenile, though both at shorter distances, as well as a placing in Group 1 company in the English 1000 Guineas last year.

The formidable partnership of Team Valor International and Gary Barber will try to circle the field with their two classy fillies, namely GISP Wakanaka (Ire) (Power {GB}) and French stakes-winner Keyflower (Fr) (Kheleyf). Charles Fipke's Lady Speightspeare (Speightstown) and the Josie Carroll-trained Seasons (Tapit) round out the Kentucky-bred contingent, while Ontario-bred horse-for-course Munnyfor Ro (Munnings) will try to parlay her liking for the track into her first seasonal win.

Before the turf fillies get rolling, the synthetic sprinters will shine in the GIII Hendrie S. with heavy favorite Boardroom (Commissioner) slated to take most of the action at the ticket windows. Familiar foes Amalfi Coast (Tapizar), conditioned by Mark Casse, and Artie's Princess (We Miss Artie) return to continue the rivalry triangle, and MGSP La Libertee (Consitution) will try to out finish her Casse stablemate.

Our Flash Drive Gives Casse, Live Oak Another Woodbine Stakes Win

Live Oak Plantation sent out two starters in the Grade 3 Ontario Colleen, but it was the Mark Casse trainee Our Flash Drive who brought home the win in the one-mile turf event at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario. Under Patrick Husbands, the daughter of Ghostzapper stalked Sweet Souper Sweet throughout the first six furlongs, took over the front on the final turn, and skipped away to a two-length win in the G3 stakes on the Queen's Plate undercard.

Coming off her last-out win in the Grade 3 Selene, also at Woodbine, Our Flash Drive broke out of the second post cleanly, Husbands taking up position behind fellow Live Oak horse Sweet Souper Sweet, trained by Michael Trombetta, who held a one-length lead, with Speightstown Shirl third. Through early fractions of :24.42 for the first quarter and :48.35 for the half-mile, Sweet Souper Sweet held onto front runner status until the final turn. Husbands moved Our Flash Drive to the lead with ease, entering the stretch on the lead.

In the race's final furlongs, Our Flash Drive increased her lead while Seasons and Speightstown Shirl moved into second and third as they approached the wire. Perseverancia was fourth, with Misspell, I Get It, and Sweet Souper Sweet rounding out the field.

The final time for the one-mile G3 Ontario Colleen was 1:34.76 over a firm E.P. Taylor turf course. Find this race's chart here.

Our Flash Drive paid $6.90, $3.50, and $2.70. Seasons paid $6.20 and $3.90. Speightstown Shirl paid $2.90 to show.

Our Flash Drive is a 3-year-old filly bred in Florida by owner Live Oak. She is by 2004 Horse of the Year Ghostzapper out of the unraced Dynaformer mare Dynamotor. Her win in the G3 stakes race brings her to a perfect 3-for-3 in 2021 and a lifetime record of three wins in five starts for career earnings of $180,937. Our Flash Drive is Mark Casse's fourth winner of the Ontario Colleen in the last five years, with Enstone (2017), Got Stormy (2018), and Chart (2020) also winning for the Hall of Fame trainer.

Toner Has High Expectations For Seasons Ahead Of Saturday’s Boiling Springs Stakes

Jimmy Toner thought enough of Seasons as a 2-year-old last year that he tried the Tapit filly in a Grade 1 race in just her second career start. And that was Plan B, said the veteran trainer.

Plan A was the Breeders' Cup, a goal that never materialized.

Now he has the Kentucky-bred filly embarking on her second start at 3, still convinced that her potential and talent could lead to something special. Seasons, who has only raced on turf in her three career starts, will be on the grass again for Saturday's $75,000 Boiling Springs Handicap, the feature race on Monmouth Park's 12-race card.

The Boiling Springs, at a mile and a sixteenth, has attracted a field of seven 3-year-old fillies.

“After she broke her maiden in her first start at Saratoga last year (in a Maiden Special Weight race at a mile and a sixteenth on the turf on Aug. 9) we were trying to make the Breeders' Cup with her,” said Toner. “The way it turned out the options that were there left us with option B. There was another race at Saratoga but it was too close to her first one. So we sent her to Woodbine for the (Grade 1) Natalma. She ran a bang-up third.

“After that she came up with some minor issues and we just couldn't make it to the Breeders' Cup. So we gave her time off. Next thing you know we look up and it's May, so we had to get started on her again.”

Seasons, out of the multiple Grade 1-winning turf mare Winter Memories, returned with an impressive second-place finish in the Hilltop Stakes at Pimlico on May 14, beaten a neck after stumbling badly at the start and rallying from 10th.

“She ran a huge race that day,” said Toner. “She went down to her nose at the break and finished well. She just missed. It really was a big race.

“She's a quality filly. We're trying to get black type with her and hopefully we can in this race.”

Owned by LNJ Foxwoods and Phipps Racing Partnership (her breeder as well), Seasons has trained sharply at Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton, Md. for this start. Paco Lopez has the mount.

“She came out of her last race good and she has been working great,” said Toner. “She has a presence about her. Most good horses do. It's their awareness about everything. And she has done everything right.

“We wanted to make sure she had enough time between races and this was the perfect spot to come back in. We're looking for a good effort and hopefully she runs well.”

Toner has started just three horses at the meet so far but has won with one, with Traffic Song prevailing in a Maiden Special Weight race. Two years ago, the veteran conditioner won the Grade 1 United Nations with Hunter O'Riley and the Cliffhanger Stakes with Hawkish at Monmouth Park.

Miss Leslie, Orbs Baby Girl, Shantisara, Ravir, Marlborough Road and Por Que No round out the field for the 42nd edition of the Boiling Springs. Shantisara, trained by Chad Brown, will be making her U.S. debut.
