Siyouni’s Paddington Eases To Tetrarch Success

Maintaining the Ballydoyle momentum at The Curragh on Monday, TDN Rising Star Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}–Modern Eagle {Ger}, by Montjeu {Ire}) justified 5-6 favouritism with a degree of comfort in the Listed Coolmore Stud Blackbeard Irish EBF Tetrarch S. to point the way to the upcoming mile Classics. Coming off a win in the Madrid Handicap at Naas, the bay who was bred and raised at Monceaux for the Wildensteins tracked the leading pair up to a mile for the first time before being coaxed to the front by Seamie Heffernan two out. Challenged by stablemate Drumroll (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), he stretched away from that full-brother to Saxon Warrior (Jpn) to score by 1 1/2 lengths.

According to Aidan O'Brien, Paddington could now follow the route of the stable's famous son of Siyouni, St Mark's Basilica (Fr). “He'd have the option of going to the French Guineas or the Irish Guineas and then he could end up being a French Derby horse after that,” he said. “He handles the ground well, he's by Siyouni out of a Montjeu mare so should handle it on both sides.”

Paddington is currently the last known foal out of the Listed Prix Belle de Nuit winner Modern Eagle, whose first foal Masterpiece (Fr) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) was twice listed-placed in France. She is a daughter of the G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Millionaia (Ire) (Peintre Celebre) and a half to the Listed Vintage Tipple S. winner and G3 Loughbrown S.-placed Mighty Blue (Fr) by Montjeu's Authorized (Ire). Millionaia is out of the G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Moonlight Dance (Alysheba), who is also the second dam of the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris scorer Ming Dynasty (Fr) (King's Best) while the fourth dam Madelia (Fr) (Caro) scored three times at the highest level including in the Diane.

No Nay Never Newcomer Wins Diminished First Flier

Four withdrawals marred The Curragh's Listed GAIN First Flier S., with the winners and likely favourites Bucanero Fuerte (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) and Noche Magica (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) among them, resulting in the bizarre circumstance of just five runners with two outings between them. In the event, it was the three newcomers who filled the frame with Ballydoyle's His Majesty (Ire) (No Nay Never–Czabo {GB}, by Sixties Icon {GB}) coming out on top to provide the stable with back-to-back renewals. Looking set to play a bit-part at best when caught flat-footed two out, the 5-2 second favourite picked up for Seamie Heffernan's whip to head the Adrian Murray-trained Valiant Force (Malibu Moon) inside the final 50 yards and score by 3/4 of a length, with 1 1/2 lengths back to the other Rosegreen runner and 15-8 favourite Unquestionable (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in third.

“He did it lovely, he's a lovely big sleepy horse,” Aidan O'Brien said. “Seamus said he had loads of speed but he was relaxed, he said when he clicked he found plenty. He's like a four-year-old, a big mature horse. You always try to get two runs before Ascot, but it's hard enough to do it here because there aren't many races.”

Czabo, who was successful in the G3 Park Express S. and Listed Prix des Lilas, produced as her first foal the useful Coill Avon (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) who beat St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in a maiden here three years ago. Out of the Listed Masaka S. runner-up Fiumicino (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) related to last year's G3 Prix Miesque winner Moon Ray (Fr) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), the descendant of the G1 Irish St Leger heroine Dark Lomond (Ire) (Lomond) also has a yearling full-brother to the winner.

Saxon Warrior’s Brother Off The Mark At The First Attempt

Aidan O'Brien's 3-year-olds were described as a “strong” group by the trainer on Monday and there was further proof of that at Navan 48 hours later as the yard took the two maidens including the closer with Drumroll (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), a full-brother to the G1 2000 Guineas and G1 Racing Post Trophy hero Saxon Warrior (Jpn). Slowly away and forced to play catch-up for much of the Vintage Crop Raceday April 22nd Maiden over a mile, the 13-2 shot stuck to his guns late on as the leaders trod water up the hill and wore down Time Tells All (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) close to the line to register a highly encouraging half-length success from that fellow newcomer who is a half-brother to Homeless Songs (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). “Seamie [Heffernan] was happy with Drumroll once the penny dropped, but he was very green early,” Aidan O'Brien's representative Chris Armstrong said. “He did his best work towards the end. We'll maybe look at a conditions race or see how he progresses and fit him in to one of the trials.”

The talented dam Maybe (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who captured the G1 Moyglare Stud S. and G2 Debutante S. to obtain European champion 2-year-old filly status before finishing third in the G1 1000 Guineas, has also produced Deep Impact's listed-placed Pavlenko (Jpn) and More Beautiful (War Front) who also achieved black-type in that manner. A full-sister to the G3 Silver Flash S. scorer Promise To Be True (Ire) and to the dam of last year's G3 Prix Thomas Bryon winner Continuous (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}), she hails from the family of the G1 Oaks and G1 Preis der Diana heroine Dancing Rain (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). Her yearling colt is by Kingman (GB).

Lord Kanaloa’s Beginnings A New Rising Star At Dundalk

While the warmth and light was bestowed on Keeneland on Friday, the cool and dark backdrop of Dundalk played host to a red-hot prospect as Beginnings (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) stormed to TDN Rising Star status. Ballydoyle's daughter of their celebrated 1000 Guineas and Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Winter (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) had stepped forward markedly from her debut when fourth behind the subsequent Listed Star Appeal S. winner and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf protagonist Spirit Gal (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) over near six furlongs at Naas Sept. 15 and traded as the 8-11 favourite for the first division of the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden.

Sent straight to the front by Seamie Heffernan, the imposing bay always looked comfortable and when asked to open up for the last couple of the seven furlongs responded impressively to put six lengths between her and the well-regarded Ger Lyons-trained Sweetest Rose (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), with another two lengths back to Zurana (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) in third. “She has a classy pedigree and she felt very classy,” Heffernan said of the first TDN Rising Star for her sire who recorded a time a mammoth two seconds faster than the second division doing it all on her own. “She's big, clear-winded, has pace and she galloped out through the winning post. She was very impressive. Without doubt she'll be, at least, a stakes filly.”

Pedigree Notes
Beginnings is the second foal out of Winter, who also broke her maiden over this course and distance in August 2016 when in the care of David Wachman before her career took off and who also garnered the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Nassau S. after her Guineas double. Her dam, the Wokingham H. winner Laddies Poker Two (Ire) (Choisir {Aus}) also produced Lovelier (Ire) by Galileo who captured the Listed Cairn Rouge S. and was second in the G2 Kilboy Estate S. Winter's next two foals are both by Justify, with last year yielding a colt and 2022 a filly.
