Sir Michael Stoute And Sea The Stars Inducted Into Hall Of Fame

Sir Michael Stoute has described himself as “very grateful” at being inducted into the QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame where he will join fellow legendary trainers Vincent O'Brien and Henry Cecil.

The 77-year-old has saddled more than 4,000 winners, with his six Derby winners at Epsom including Shergar in 1981 and Desert Crown last year. Derby-winning champion Sea The Stars will also be inducted along with Stoute at next weekend's Qipco Guineas meeting at Newmarket.

Stoute said, “I am very flattered and most grateful to have been inducted into the QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame. Of course, it has only been made possible by good horses, talented and dedicated staff and loyal owners.”

He added, “To be inducted into the Hall of Fame and joining Vincent O'Brien, who was my hero and probably the greatest trainer that has ever lived, and Henry Cecil, who was also a very good friend, I'm very, very grateful.”

Launched in 2021, the Hall of Fame sets out to immortalise the modern greats of the sport, both human and equine, from 1970 onwards.

Stoute and Sea The Stars are the first to be inducted in 2023, both having been chosen by an independent panel of industry experts in recognition of their outstanding achievements within the sport.

Both inductions will be officially recognised through a special presentation moment at Newmarket Racecourse on Sunday May 7 during the Guineas Festival.

Stoute will become the first active trainer to be inducted into the Hall of Fame–and just the third trainer overall, after the revered Vincent O'Brien and Sir Henry Cecil.

Meanwhile, Sea The Stars, trained by John Oxx and ridden by jockey Mick Kinane in all of his races, is the eighth horse to join the Hall of Fame, 14 years after winning the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Oxx commented, “He [Sea The Stars] was enthusiastic, energetic and just a joy to look at. Everything he did, you just couldn't take your eyes off him. The mental strength is of course what makes those great horses as great as they are. Usually they're tougher and stronger mentally than other horses. To win the six races over six months, that takes a great mental constitution.”

Observations: Daughter of Lumiere Starts at Newmarket

SILVER LADY (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) is the third foal out of the G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Lumiere (GB) (Shamardal) who particularly excelled at Newmarket and has already produced Highland Avenue (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) who captured the Listed Feilden S. on this card two years ago. Trained like that useful type by Charlie Appleby, Godolphin's March-foaled homebred is met by another intriguing newcomer by Sea The Stars in Sunderland Holding's Sea Claret (GB), a William Haggas-trained relative of the recent G3 Prix Vanteaux winner Jannah Rose (Ire) (Frankel {GB}).

Coronation Cup Eyed for Emily Upjohn Comeback

John and Thady Gosden's Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) will possibly return in Epsom's G1 Coronation Cup June 2 as her first start since capturing the G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares S. Oct. 15. She was initially set to return in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan but missed the opportunity having not come to hand as quickly as liked and returns to Epsom after being narrowly denied when sent off the 6-4 favourite for the Oaks at the Surrey venue last year.

“She ran a huge race in the Oaks when just beaten there and had a nice swansong (at Ascot) at the end of last year,” Thady Gosden told Racing TV's Luck On Sunday. “She was heading towards Dubai but with the cold weather in the spring, it didn't quite work out. Obviously she would have been taking on Equinox (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) which would have been an interesting one. The Coronation Cup would be a nice early one to start with if she's ready in time, but we'll see how she is and she'll tell us.”

Another star filly from the Gosden string staying in training as a 4-year-old is G1 Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois winner Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who could head to Newbury on May 20 for the G1 Al Shaqab Lockinge S., with all the top mile races on her radar this term.

“She's wintered well and is in good order, enjoying her training and looks great,” continued Gosden. “She is obviously a top-class miler and all these mile races will be the ones for her. She is certainly an independently minded filly. She has plenty of character but is exceptionally talented.”

A return to Royal Ascot could be on the cards for three-time G1 Dubai Turf winner Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). The 7-year-old could bid to repeat his G1 Prince of Wales's Stakes success of 2020 when running on home soil this summer.

“He had a slightly curtailed one last year and it was fantastic to get him back for the Dubai Turf–it was a good team effort there,” Gosden said. “He won the Prince of Wales's Stakes two years ago and he is a horse you could look towards that with.”

First Mares Confirmed in Foal to Stradivarius

Seven-time Group 1 winner Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) has had his first mares scanned in foal at the National Stud.

“Stradivarius has taken to his new role extremely well.” said National Stud head of bloodstock Joe Bradley. “He has 11 mares scanned in foal and will cover well over 100 mares this year.”
Stradivarius claimed Group honours 18 times during his career retiring with total earnings of almost £3.5million, plus two individual £1million bonuses.

There are sizeable payouts on offer for breeders supporting Stradivarius, with £25,000 for his first ten 2-year-old winners. His first flat Group winners will boost their earnings by £100,000 for a Group 2/3 and £250,000 for a Group 1.*
