Raabihah Supreme in Prix de Pomone Triumph

Shadwell's 4-year-old distaffer Raabihah (Sea the Stars {Ire}), unsuccessful in five outings since annexing last term's G3 Prix de Psyche at Deauville, rebounded off three second-place efforts this year and produced a telling burst at the end of Sunday's G2 Darley Prix de Pomone to register an impressive score upon her return to the Normandy venue. The contest was delayed by an excessive hold in the gates while a replacement battery was installed a failed break and the homebred chestnut was positioned in a stalking fourth for the most part. Quickening smartly in the centre of the track to seize control from the pacesetting Mystery Angel (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) with 300 metres remaining, the 29-10 third choice quickened again once in front and surged clear to easily account for Joie de Soir (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) by 2 1/2 lengths. Valia (Fr) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) was left standing at the delayed break and made strong late headway to finish a short neck shy of second.

Raabihah's run of five defeats included a second in last term's G1 Prix Vermeille and a fifth in ParisLongchamp's G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, with this year's renewals of both contests now back on the radar, and a run of three seconds in May 2 G3 Prix Allex France back at the Bois de Boulogne venue, Saint-Cloud's May 26 G2 Prix Corrida and Clairefontaine's Aug. 1 Listed Prix du Pays d'Auge leading up to this redemption.

“With regard to her performances this year, I think she lacked a bit of her old sparkle,” reflected trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. “If you go back to last year she started her season very early at Cagnes-sur-Mer and ended in the Arc so it was a very long campaign. She had to pay for it at some point, it took its toll in the spring and she earned her little break at the beginning of the summer. She is obviously now back to her best and in time for the major races in the autumn. I didn't hesitate to nominate this race, rather than go for the [G1] Prix Jean Romanet because I feel this longer trip suits her much better. I don't know for certain which race she will go for next, but it could be the [Sept X G1] Prix Vermeille [back at ParisLongchamp].”

Raabihah, one of two winners and the leading performer produced by Garmoosha (Kingmambo), is a half-sister to Listed Wait A While S. placegetter Filfila (Kitten's Joy), the unraced 2-year-old filly Rihaaf (Kitten's Joy), a yearling filly by More Than Ready and a weanling filly by Noble Mission (GB). Her dam is an unraced half to G1 Fillies' Mile third Firdaws (Mr. Greeley) out of G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Eswarah (GB) (Unfuwain), who in turn is a daughter of MG1SW G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Midway Lady (Alleged). The latter also produced G1 Irish 1000 Guineas third Umniyatee (GB) (Green Desert) and G3 Princess Royal S. victrix Itnab (GB) (Green Desert), who in turn is the dam of stakes-winning G3 Al Shindagha Sprint runner-up Alazeyab (El Prado {Ire}) and Peruvian Group 3 placegetter Madera de Guerrero (Street Cry {Ire}). Descendants of Umniyatee include Argentina's G1 Presidente da Republica victor Maltes (Brz) (Red Runner).

Sea The Stars Filly Earns Rising Star Tag at The Curragh

She may have been a shade slowly into stride for Saturday's Irish Stallions Farms EBF Maiden at The Curragh, but Moyglare Stud Farm's 2-year-old filly Eclat de Lumiere (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) was motoring at the business end of the seven-furlong contest to earn TDN Rising Star status with a degree of panache and become the 12th 'TDN Rising Star' for her sire. Overcoming a dawdling getaway and an unfavourable outside draw to track the leaders in sixth after the initial strides, the 7-2 chance made smooth headway into contention approaching the quarter-mile marker and kept on strongly once launching her challenge passing the furlong marker to deny the promising effort of Benitoite (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) by a half length.

“She's a lovely filly and she had been working nicely, but she's still a very big immature filly so whether I run her again this year or not is debatable,” said trainer Dermot Weld. “The ground was probably a shade softer than ideal for her and Colin [Keane] just thought she has plenty of pace. If I run her once more again it will be in a stakes race and that will be it. I'll discuss it with her owner Eva Maria Haefner. There is the [G3] CL Weld Park S., but I wouldn't the ground too soft as she's a very good actioned filly. She's a lovely filly for next year. She had the race won from a fair bit out today and is a lovely filly in the making.”

Eclat de Lumiere becomes the seventh scorer produced by a winning daughter of stakes-winning G3 Prix Penelope third Bellona (Ire) (Bering {GB}), herself a half-sister to three black-type performers headed by G3 Prix de Flore-winning matriarch In Clover (GB) (Inchinor {GB}). The April-foaled homebred chestnut, the latest foal for her dam, is a full-sister to G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris victrix Listen In (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and a half to G1SW Hong Kong champion Dominant (Ire) (Cacique {Ire}), G2 Lennox S.-winning sire Es Que Love (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) and Listed Midsummer S. winner Zhui Feng (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

Solario Success For Sea The Stars’ Reach For The Moon

The Queen has a serious Classic candidate for 2022 judged on the manner of the win of her homebred Reach For the Moon (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in Saturday's G3 Betway Solario S. at Sandown. Runner-up to TDN Rising Star Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in the Listed Chesham S. over this seven-furlong trip June 19, the bay had since beaten the subsequent York nursery winner Harrow (Ire) (El Kabeir) by four lengths in a Newbury novice July 16 and it was all about him as he started as the 2-5 favourite. Settled in a perfect rhythm on the outside by Frankie Dettori tracking the leading duo, he travelled smoothly to the front passing the two-furlong pole and stayed straight and true on his own to dominate from there. At the line, there was a four-length margin to the Chesham third Great Max (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), who held on to second by a short head from Rerouting (Ire) (El Kabeir). “He was quite babyish at the beginning of his career–quite coltish and not concentrating, but with racing he is getting better and better,” Dettori said. “Today he stopped his antics and was focusing better. He has got a good size, a wonderful stride and he has got gears. He is a very exciting prospect.”

John Gosden is generally a fan of Sandown and it was no surprise that he was able to equal Sir Henry Cecil's record of six successes in this prize which he had used as a launchpad for the future celebrities Raven's Pass, Kingman (GB) and Too Darn Hot (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Whether Reach For the Moon will get to those heights remains to be seen, but his trainer is more than satisfied with his progress so far. “They didn't go much pace, so Frankie thought he would get on with it. He didn't think he would go to the front that fast and go that far clear,” he commented. “He did well, as he has learned a lot running up the Sandown hill on his own but he has showed a bit of class I thought. You have got to look towards the autumn and we would like to wind up in one of those nice group 1s, so we will see how he is over the next few days and make our decision. He is lively, but nothing more than that–he doesn't pull. He is very progressive and has done everything right. He has developed and strengthened.”

Reach For the Moon's dam Golden Stream (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) defied her staying pedigree by exhibiting genuine pace by winning the Listed Eternal S. and Listed October S. and finishing runner-up in the G3 Chartwell Fillies' S. and G3 Oak Tree S. over seven furlongs. Her son Mainstream (GB) (Dansili {GB}) was runner-up over that trip in the G1 Winx S. behind the legendary mare after which the race was named when racing in Australia as Invictus Prince, while his full-sister Thames Pageant {GB}) is in turn the dam of this year's Listed Prix de la Vallee d'Auge winner and G2 Queen Mary S. runner-up Twilight Gleaming (Ire) (National Defense {GB}). Golden Stream, who is out of the triple group-winning G2 Ribblesdale S. winner Phantom Gold (GB) (Machiavellian), is a full-sister to the possibly unlucky G1 Epsom Oaks runner-up Flight of Fancy (GB) who in turn produced the dual G3 Winter Hill S. scorer Fabricate (GB) (Makfi {GB}). Her yearling filly is by Dubawi (Ire), while she also has a colt foal by Siyouni (Fr).

No Doubting Stradivarius In The Lonsdale Cup

With the drying ground ruling out the G1 Goodwood Cup hero Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}), Friday's G2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup at York was teed up perfectly for Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) to register an inspiring third success in this marathon. Open to questioning following his fourth in the G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot June 17, Bjorn Nielsen's staying star was settled in second early by Frankie Dettori as The Grand Visir (GB) (Frankel {GB}) set off in isolation. Joined by Spanish Mission (Noble Mission {GB}) approaching two out as they loomed on the front end, William Buick had the upper hand for much of the rest of the distance and looked likely to prevail until the final yards. It was then that the 4-6 favourite was lifted by the crowd to give extra and outstay his chief rival for an 18th career and 16th pattern-race win by a head as The Grand Visir finished seven lengths adrift in third. “I'm feeling emotional,” Frankie said. “It was always going to be a messy race and I was using Richard [Kingscote on The Grand Visir] as a reference point, but Strad likes a target and so I pushed him close to William [Buick] and it worked–he only does enough and William would not go away, so it was a tremendous horse race. The reception he got–he's loved by everyone.”

One of the most consistent staying stars of all time, Stradivarius has drawn on his incredible constitution to maintain a level of ability that is still unattainable to much-younger rivals. Spanish Mission had shown when winning the G2 Yorkshire Cup and last year's G2 Doncaster Cup that he is a stayer of considerable merit and he held every chance of subduing the Gosden A-lister with everything to suit but ultimately came up short. With Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) out of action for now, Stradivarius has the opportunity to garner more of these before time is called.

Dettori thinks there is more to come from the 7-year-old. “Every time he's run here I've felt he is below-par–he fell in the last two times he won this for the bonus–and I feel he's much better at Ascot,” he said of the hero of two Yorkshire Cups and the 2018 and 2019 renewals of this race. “He's getting older, he's getting wiser. He got the job done and knows exactly what he's got to do.”

John Gosden added, “He's phenomenal. All those miles of racing. I always think flat horses are at their peak at five, but some of the great jumpers race on so we'll see how he is. He's a very happy horse and he's got a very good sense of humour as well. As long as he's happy, we can keep racing. He was a really angry chap when he came home from Goodwood and hadn't run. He used to sting like a butterfly and float like a bee, but he's a little more rope a dope now! He's still up for it and it was a proper race for everyone to watch between two fabulous horses. The [Sept. 10 G2] Doncaster Cup is a possibility and there is Champions Day, I hope it's decent ground but if it's bottomless we might have to reroute.”

Anna Lisa Balding said of the runner-up, who is bound for the G1 Melbourne Cup, “He's run a hell of a race and I actually thought we'd won when he went ahead. I thought we'd got him, but we didn't. We'll stick to Plan A, Australia here we come and let's hope he does his stuff out there.”
Stradivarius is the last foal out of Private Life (Fr) (Bering {GB}), who was bought by Nielsen for 70,000gns at the 2006 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. She also produced the G3 Bavarian Classic and G3 Furstenberg-Rennen scorer Persian Storm (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), the group-placed Rembrandt Van Rijn (Ire) (Peintre Celebre) and the stakes-placed Magical Eve (Ger) (Oratorio {Ire}). Like Peintre Celebre a descendant of the great Pawneese (Ire), who captured the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. and the G1 Prix de Diane, she is also connected to the G1 Melbourne Cup hero Protectionist (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}).
