Stradivarius Supreme In The Doncaster Cup

With his stayers' division dominance seemingly on the wane this term, Bjorn Nielsen's talisman Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) assuaged any doubts that the old lustre had been lost by outclassing a reduced field in Thursday's G2 Doncaster Cup. Shorn of G1 Goodwood Cup hero Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) in the build up, the 18-furlong marathon was led by The Grand Visir (GB) (Frankel {GB}) as Frankie Dettori anchored Stradivarius five lengths off the tempo passing the judge first time. That margin had nearly doubled by halfway, but it was as far adrift as 7-year-old veteran became during the race. Bounding forward on the bridle in the straight, the 4-11 favourite was in full control inside the final quarter mile and extended clear in the closing stages to secure a second edition of the contest by 2 1/2 lengths from the outclassed Alerta Roja (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}). Old foe Nayef Road (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) finished a further four lengths back in third.

“He's a phenomenon,” stated John Gosden. “He's a wonderful horse and has been great at home. He's enjoyed all his training, he loves his racing and likes coming racing. I had no qualms about coming here and I couldn't have been more thrilled with him. He senses a horse coming to him and plays cat and mouse with them now. I'm sorry the other horse [Trueshan] didn't, run but maybe we'll meet one day. He's had a great season and won three out of four, but Frankie's ride in the [G1] Gold Cup [at Royal Ascot] wasn't his greatest. That said, the winner was mighty impressive. The sad thing for me in the year is that we couldn't run at Goodwood, because he adores Goodwood. His enthusiasm is there 100 per cent and I can assure everyone who loves him, the moment it's not there he will be retired. Until that day comes, which he will tell us, he will race. He lives a bit on the edge and lets us know what he wants. I've always adored stayers and to train him is a dream come true.”

Looking ahead to targets later in the season, Gosden added, “There are two races in the autumn, the [G1 Prix du Cadran] and [G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup at] Ascot, but Ascot last year was heavy and he hated it. Those are the options and it will be one not both. He'll go on summer soft, but not when it goes autumn deep as he cannot take it. It was a mistake to run him in it last year and in the Arc.”

Regular partner Frankie Dettori, whose first of five winners in the 255-year-old contest was provided by the enigmatic Arcadian Heights (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}) in 1994, commented, “That was great and it's probably the easiest race he's had since last year when he was here. He still loves his racing and made it look easy again.”

Stradivarius, the latest of seven foals and leading performer for the dual stakes-placed Private Life (Fr) (Bering {GB}), is kin to the black-type trio of G3 Furstenberg-Rennen and G3 Bavarian Classic victor Persian Storm (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), G3 Abu Dhabi Championship third Rembrandt Van Rijn (Ire) (Peintre Celebre) and South Africa's Listed Scarlet Lady S. placegetter Magical Eve (Ger) (Oratorio {Ire}). His second dam Poughkeepsie (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), who is also the ancestress of G1 Melbourne Cup and G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin-winning sire Protectionist (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), is a daughter of G1 Epsom Oaks, G1 Prix de Diane and G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. heroine Pawneese (Ire) (Carvin {Fr}). Pawneese, in turn, is a half-sister to Petroleuse (Ire) (Habitat), herself the granddam of MG1SW sire Peintre Celebre (Nureyev).

Sea the Stars’ Baaeed Takes The Moulin

Up in class and up against milers proven at the top level on Sunday, Shadwell's Baaeed (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) went through the motions in the manner of a true professional to collect the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp. Sent off the 1-2 favourite having shown rare talent in the Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. at Newmarket July 8 and the G3 Thoroughbred S. at Goodwood July 30, the William Haggas-trained bay was sent into third early by Jim Crowley and waited outside with no threat of interference. Seizing the lead from the aggressively-ridden Novemba (Ger) (Gleneagles {Ire}) approaching the furlong pole, the homebred held Order of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) to score by 1 1/4 lengths, with Victor Ludorum (GB) (Shamardal) a short neck away in third. “He's a super horse who is improving all the time and still learning,” the winning rider said. “He was idling in front and is very exciting. It's the first group 1 in Europe for Sheikha Hissa, so I'm pleased for her. He's a very easy ride and travels well and stays a mile very well.”

Maiden winners who impress on the clock as well as visually are often false dawns, but Baaeed went forward from his eye-catching debut at Leicester June 7 to register a stunning 7 1/2-length success in a Newmarket novice 12 days later. If there was any chance of a bubble bursting, it would have happened in a fiercely-competitive renewal of the July Course's Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. but his answer was a four-length success as lacking in drama as it is possible to see from a lightly-raced 3-year-old so soon after his introduction to racing. That was on good-to-firm, but as the soft dried out to produce a tacky surface at the Goodwood festival he just churned out another star display when the 6 1/2-length winner of the G3 Thoroughbred S. Demanding a tilt at a race such as this in the process, the speedier and classier version of his full-brother Hukum (Ire) was just as unfazed surrounded by winners of a Breeders' Cup, a mile Classic and a super-strong Falmouth.

It was the heroine of the latter contest who broke best, but Jim Crowley was keen to close the door on Snow Lantern (GB) (Frankel {GB}) as Ryan Moore sent on Order of Australia and then Novemba surged by and into isolation in front. That misjudgement of pace by Bauyrzhan Murzabayev meant the G2 German 1000 Guineas winner was an irrelevance up ahead and with Baaeed sticking close to Order of Australia the tactics were already sorted out by the time the home turn was navigated. From the two to the one, the deciding factor was that the Haggas star was quicker than his Ballydoyle rival as Victor Ludorum put up his best performance in some time on a real going day.

“It looks like he was a little bit fresh today and slightly jumped on the bit as the German filly went by and he didn't have cover, but he stayed on nicely in the straight,” Maureen Haggas said. “In fact, he had a little bit of a battle which he hadn't had before so that will be good for his education. I'd imagine there will be some improvement to come, but it will be more from the learning process than physically. Now he's had a battle he might be even better. I would say the [Oct. 16 G1] Queen Elizabeth II [at Ascot] is the logical next race, but we don't want to run him on ground that is too soft so we'll see nearer the time. There is also the Breeders' Cup. He's very lightly-raced and a brand new horse really, so hopefully he might stay in training as a 4-year-old but that's up to his owners.”

Baaeed rates as the fastest group 1 winner for his illustrious sire so far, which is a surprise given that his aforementioned full-sibling Hukum has won two renewals of the G3 Geoffrey Freer S. over 13 furlongs and a G3 Silver Cup over a mile and three quarters. The dam is the Listed Prix de Liancourt winner Aghareed (Kingmambo), who is a daughter of the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf and GI Flower Bowl Invitational heroine Lahudood (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}). The fourth dam is the Listed Cheshire Oaks runner-up Bashayer (Mr. Prospector), a full-sister to the dual listed scorer Sarayir who is in turn responsible for the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. heroine Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway). Bashayer is kin to the legendary champion Nashwan and the four-times group 1-winning Nayef et al. Aghareed's unraced 2-year-old filly by Intello (Ger) is named Zaghaareed (GB), while she also has a yearling colt by Nathaniel (Ire) and a colt foal by Night of Thunder (Ire).

Reach For The Moon Camp Eyes Champagne

Progressive colt Reach For The Moon (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) is a likely starter in the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster on Sept. 11. The John and Thady Gosden-trained colt, who carries The Queen's silks, was a last out winner of the G3 Betway Solario S. at Sandown on Aug. 21.

“Reach For The Moon is in really good form,” said The Queen's Racing Manager John Warren after Reach For The Moon's stablemate Saga (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) won at Ascot on Friday. “He had a good blow yesterday [Thursday] and I think we're all just getting our heads around his next start.

“He's got an entry in the Champagne S. next week, so I think we'll be looking strongly at that to see whether or not that's where he ought to go next. He's a horse that needs keeping on top of himself as he's full of himself.”

Second in his first two starts, including the Listed Chesham S. behind top G1 Derby contender Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}), Reach For The Moon drew off by four lengths to win a novice stakes over seven furlongs on July 16. The colt is second choice for next spring's Derby at this stage.

Warren added, “I think John and Thady and Frankie [Dettori] think it wouldn't do him any harm to come out again and get a bit streetwise if he's going to be a Group 1 horse–the more education going into Group 1s the better. There's a strong possibility that we'll take a good, hard look at the Champagne.”

Sea the Stars’ Lavender’s Blue On Top In The Celebration Mile

Becoming the fifth subsequent pattern-race winner to emerge from the G1 Falmouth S., Benny Andersson's homebred Lavender's Blue (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) who was only eighth in that July 9 Newmarket feature took a step forward to register a career-best success in Saturday's G2 tote Celebration Mile at Goodwood. Trapped three-wide early under restraint from Rob Hornby, the 20-1 shot had the ideal target horse to follow in Benbatl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who had fly-jumped leaving the stalls and surrendered valuable ground there. Granting first run to that 9-4 favourite approaching the final furlong, the Amanda Perrett-trained bay delivered a withering run down the outer to deny that rival in the last stride and prevail by a short head as the long-time leader Pogo (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}) finished two lengths away in third. “She's really deserved that, as we've set her some stiff tasks the last few times,” the winning trainer said. “The fillies' division is really strong this year and that is why we weren't too worried about taking on the opposite sex today.”

Lavender's Blue had looked to connections to be a burgeoning middle-distance performer in her 3-year-old days, but it was not until she came back to this trip that she proved most effective when taking the G3 Atalanta S. at Sandown in August 2019. Fourth in Newmarket's G1 Sun Chariot S. on her only other start that term, the bay's six outings in 2020 yielded little in the way of progression with a third on her defence of her Atalanta title her best effort. Coming back at five to win the Listed Snowdrop Fillies' S. on Kempton's Polytrack Apr. 5, she was third behind Lady Bowthorpe (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and Queen Power (Ire) (Shamardal) and in front of Indie Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the G2 Dahlia S. over nine furlongs at Newmarket May 2 before running fifth behind all three in Royal Ascot's G2 Duke of Cambridge S. June 16.

Amanda Perrett deserves credit for her foresight after Lavender's Blue's Falmouth eclipse, switching from the current red-hot fillies and mares' division at a track which she had visited only once when sixth in last year's G1 Nassau S. trying a mile and a quarter that probably stretches her stamina. “Her group 2 win has been long overdue, so I'm just really glad to get it done today,” she said. “Her form is very strong. She's very consistent, she loves top of the ground and if you look at her three-year-old form she was mixing it with Oaks fillies so she deserved a big one. We just need to finish it off now by winning the [Oct. 2 G1] Sun Chariot, which is where she'll go next at Newmarket and we'll hope for fast ground. I'm delighted for Mr Andersson. You couldn't wish to train for a better man and it's great for him, especially as he loves Goodwood.”

Godolphin's G1 Dubai Turf, G1 Grosser Dallmayr Preis and G1 Ladbrokes S. hero Benbatl was far from disappointing on his seasonal bow and trainer Saeed bin Suroor said, “Benbatl reared in the stalls, which caused him to miss the break but he still ran a big race to finish a close second. We will keep the options open for Champions Day at Ascot, whether we go for the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes or the G1 Champion Stakes, and he could run in the [Sept. 24] G2 Joel Stakes at Newmarket again beforehand.”

Lavender's Blue is the second foal out of Beatrice Aurore (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), who captured the G3 Prix Chloe and this track's Listed Height of Fashion S. and was runner-up in the G1 Premio Lydia Tesio and placed in three other group 3 contests in Britain, Ireland and Norway. The second dam is the Listed Prix Belle de Nuit winner Mondschein (GB) (Rainbow Quest), who is full-sister to the G3 Royal Whip S. scorer Jahafil (GB) and kin to the dam of the G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano winner and G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup runner-up Highdown (Ire) (Selkirk). Beatrice Aurore also has a 2-year-old filly by Australia (GB) and a 2021 full-sister to Lavender's Blue.
