KEEP, Race For Education Announce 2023 Scholarship Recipients

Over $33,000 in scholarships were awarded to Kentucky equine students for 2023, courtesy of The Kentucky Equine Education Project (KEEP) Foundation, and The Race For Education (RFE).

The KEEP Foundation's board of directors approved scholarships for 16 students attending equine programs at universities across the Commonwealth. All of the 2023 scholarship recipients are students currently enrolled at a university or college in Kentucky in either an equine and/or agriculture related major or their parents work in the equine industry.

In addition to the aforementioned 16 Kentucky students, the Race For Education also awarded its annual Robert J. Frankel Scholarship to four students from New York: Elsa Lorieul, Carlos Lopez, Francis Marrone and Anitza Parrilla. Now in its 13th year, the Robert J. Frankel Scholarship, in honor of the late Robert (Bobby) J. Frankel, is awarded to students whose families are employed in the Thoroughbred industry and are pursuing any field of study at a college or university in California or New York state. All of the 2023 Frankel Scholarship recipients have parents that work at various racetracks in New York and will be attending universities in New York.

The 16 2023 Race For Education KEEP Foundation Scholarship Recipients are: Jaida Alee, University of Kentucky; Brant Brower, Midway University; Alysa Farrell, University of Kentucky; Leo Foo, University of Kentucky; Rebekah Garza, Morehead State University; Kara Knott, University of Louisville; Thomas Mullikin, Robert Morris University; Lauren Mullikin, University of Kentucky; Taylor Nackers, University of Kentucky; Matthew Reidy, University of Kentucky; Noah Roberson, Kentucky Horseshoeing School; Sydnee Stacy, Midway University; Maddie Stephens, University of Kentucky; Sophia Vega, University of Kentucky; Samantha Versocki, University of Louisville and Logan West, University of Kentucky.

Gregson Foundation Awards Five Scholarships at Annual Meeting

The Edwin J. Gregson Foundation awarded 25 students–including five for the current 2022/23 school year–academic scholarships during the organization's annual board meeting held Dec. 2. The five new students, who attend a variety of schools including the University of California at Davis, were awarded a total of $23,000.

The new scholarship recipients join the 20 students already in the program and who were given continuing grants for the current year. Those students, who are studying at such universities as Cornell, Iowa State, the University of Oklahoma, Stanford, Tulane, and UCLA, were given a total of $164,000.

During the meeting, the foundation also added longtime owner Bill Strauss to its board of directors. Strauss is probably best known for his ownership interests in Grade I winners Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow), Turbulent Descent (Congrats) and Mizdirection (Mizzen Mast). Professionally, Strauss has been involved with Shari's Berries and Pro Flowers, and he and his brother, Jeffrey, own the Pamplemousse Grille in Solana Beach, across the street from Del Mar racetrack.

The Edwin J. Gregson Foundation, named in memory of the late trainer Edwin J. Gregson, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established to develop programs to benefit and enhance the quality of life of California thoroughbred horse racing's backstretch workers and their family members.

Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation Awards $5,000 to Wilson College

The Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation (TERF) has awarded Wilson College $5,000 to be used for scholarship support.

This year's scholarship recipient is Adrianna “Andie” Swanson of Kersey, Pa. She has been around horses her entire life and is expected to graduate in 2023 with a major in Equestrian Studies. Swanson recently got her second off-the-track Thoroughbred and will be using her in a training class at Wilson College.

TERF awards scholarships consistent with its mission of promoting equine education and research by sponsoring scholarships in veterinary medicine and supporting organizations that are educating the public in the proper care of horses. Since 2015, 23 students at Wilson College have been awarded TERF scholarships to continue their education, totaling $82,000 in awards.

TJC Opens Applications for Five Academic Scholarships

Applications are now open for The Jockey Club (TJC)'s five academic scholarships, which apply to the 2023-24 academic year. Applications close Feb. 1, 2023, with recipients to be announced in the spring.

The five available scholarships, worth a total of $76,000, are as follows:

The Jockey Club Scholarship ($15,000; $7,500 per semester): available for students in academic pursuit of majors for future employment in the equine industry. Open to any equine breed or discipline; preference will be given to candidates with the expressed desire to secure employment in the Thoroughbred industry.
The Jockey Club Advancement of Women in Racing Scholarship ($20,000; $10,000 per semester): open to women pursuing a career in the equine industry who are enrolled full time as an undergraduate or graduate student at a college or university. Open to any equine breed or discipline; preference will be given to candidates with the expressed desire to secure employment in the Thoroughbred industry.
The Jockey Club Vision Scholarship ($20,000; $10,000 per semester): open to students from a minority racial or ethnic group who are pursuing a career in the equine industry. Applicants must be enrolled full time as an undergraduate or graduate student at a college or university. Open to any equine breed or discipline; preference will be given to candidates with the expressed desire to secure employment in the Thoroughbred industry.
The Jockey Club Benevolence Scholarship ($15,000; $7,500 per semester): a need-based award to enable a student to attend a full-time program at a college, university, or trade program. Preference will be given to backstretch and horse farm employees and their family members. Applicants are not required to be pursuing a career in the equine or Thoroughbred industries.
The Jockey Club Jack Goodman Scholarship ($6,000; $3,000 per semester): open to students enrolled in the University of Arizona's Race Track Industry Program (RTIP). Goodman was a resident of Tucson, a longtime member of TJC, and one of three founders of the RTIP.
