Hollie Doyle to Take Part in STC International Jockeys’ Challenge

Jockey Hollie Doyle, who celebrated her first Group 1 winner in 2020, will take part in the STC International Jockeys' Challenge in Saudia Arabia later this month.

The Feb. 19 contest features 14 jockeys at King Abdulaziz Racetrack, with Doyle also booked on MGSW Extra Elusive (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) for trainer Roger Charlton in the $20-million Saudi Cup the next day.

“I'm really excited to be riding in Saudi,” said Doyle, who also rode her first winner at Royal Ascot last term and competed in the Hong Kong International Jockeys' Championship. “I've had a few international trips recently, including Hong Kong, America and Bahrain, and it's great that I'm getting to go to these big meetings around the world.

“Competing in the jockey challenge events is really cool, because you get to ride alongside some of the world's top athletes. I've only been to some of these places for a short period of time, but I've learnt a lot. That's what will hopefully make me a better jockey, and I'll keep taking these opportunities with both hands.

“Last year was unbelievable, and when you get a taste of success it makes you want it even more. I've now got even more drive and ambition to succeed in 2021.”

Named The Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year, Doyle is could also potentially team up with Jane Chapple-Hyam's Albadri (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) in the Saudi Derby.

“It looks as though Extra Elusive has got into the Saudi Cup, so I'd be really excited about riding him in that on the Saturday,” she said. “The prize-money goes all the way down to 10th, so it would be great if he took his chance there and could get amongst it.

“I'd like to think he'll handle the dirt because he goes well on slow ground here in England. I'm not sure how similar it would ride to a slow turf track, but I'd prefer to ride him on the dirt than I would on the turf as you'd imagine it will be slower. The Saudi Cup is only nine furlongs, and we know he stays further than that.

“I could have Albadri on the Saturday too, because I know Jane Chapple-Hyam is hoping to go for the Al Rajhi Bank Saudi Derby after his win at Southwell recently. He's a lightly-raced horse that's going the right way at the moment, but he'll need to take another big step forward to get competitive.”

“There's been a bit of toing and froing, but he's going to run in the Saudi Cup,” said Charlton. “We got an invite to the Saudi Cup that we weren't really expecting–and having discussed it with the owner [Imad Al Sagar], he's very keen to run in it. The prize-money is so much more than the Neom Turf Cup–if you finish 10th in the Saudi Cup, it's the same prize-money for finishing second in the turf race.

“Over 1800m they'll go very, very quick–and the kickback will be something he hasn't experienced before. We're hoping we can get among the money. In the past he has inclined to be up at the front making the running–this obviously won't be the case, so a wider draw would probably be beneficial to keep him out of the kickback.

“My concern is that he hasn't travelled abroad yet, and he's a fairly highly-strung individual. It's how he takes a 16-hour journey door-to-door and how he handles the training on the track out there. He had a break after the end of last season, and the weather hasn't been very helpful to us–we've had snow here twice. He didn't resume exercise until after Christmas, and it's been a steady build-up. He does all his training by himself, but he seems in good form. It's important that he's in a consistent and steady routine every day.”

‘She Has A Bright Future’: Soft Whisper Makes A Lot Of Noise In UAE 1,000 Guineas

The first classic of the UAE season took place in the UAE 1000 Guineas (Listed) this Thursday at Meydan, held over one mile on the dirt. Godolphin's Saeed bin Suroor-trained Soft Whisper vied for favoritism with Al Rashid Stables' Doug Watson-trained Mnasek before the race.

What set up as a great matchup never manifested as Soft Whisper screamed home a dominant seven-length winner under stalk-and-pounce Frankie Dettori tactics, while Mnasek missed the break before closing to a distant second under Dane O'Neill. Watson-trained Super Chianti was another 2 1/4 lengths back in third under Pat Dobbs after racing greenly during the final three furlongs.

The final time was 1:38.67 and the winner landed her second race of the season, following a one-sided tally in the UAE 1000 Guineas Trial three weeks ago. By Dubawi out of the Sea the Stars mare Placidia, the homebred gave Dettori his fourth win in the race this century and Bin Suroor his 12th. Bigger races may be on the horizon for the now four-time winner from six starts.

“She missed the kick last time, but this time she jumped really good into position and was always in control,” Dettori said. “When I kicked, she went–simply as that. I didn't have to do too much. She has a bright future. Saeed mentioned everything–Saudi (Derby), UAE Oaks, UAE Derby–who knows. When you win so impressively, you get excited and you think of big plans. I was just saying to Saeed that the last time I won a race this easily was probably Dubai Millennium in 2000. It took me 21 years to find one just as easy.

“That was good. We have big hopes for her. Maybe she didn't beat the best in the world, but the way she did it, you have to be impressed. We'll take one step at a time. Nothing has tested her today, so it would be wrong for me to say how good she is because I need some better competition, but at the moment everything is in the right place.”

“We got beat by a good horse on the night, there's no doubt about that,” O'Neill added about the runner-up. “We got a bit of kickback early on and they got a couple lengths on me on the turn, but when she saw daylight, she stayed on well. She's a timid little filly and likes a little bit of space and out of the kickback. She's a nice filly and she'll probably stay farther next time.”

Regarding Super Chianti, Dobbs added: “She was greener tonight than she was the first night. She travelled well, but when I went for her, she just stuck her head in the air and never went forward for me.”

The $1.5 million Saudi Derby is set for a similar one-turn, one-mile trip at King Abdulaziz Racecourse on Feb. 20 in Riyadh, while the UAE Oaks (G3) over 1 3/16 miles on Feb. 18. The UAE Derby is slated for Dubai World Cup day, March 27.

Mishriff Training Well for Saudi Cup

French Group 1 winner Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), who ran second in the 2020 Saudi Derby in Riyadh on Feb. 29, needs a wide draw in the Feb. 20 $20-million Saudi Cup according to trainer John Gosden. The colt rebounded with a win in the Listed Newmarket S. on June 6 and won the G1 Prix du Jockey Club on July 5. His final win of the year was a victory in the G2 Prix Guillaume de Ornano at Deauville on Aug. 15 before an eighth in the G1 QIPCO Champions S. at Ascot in mid-October. The 4-year-old carries the colours of Prince Faisal and will be ridden by his retained jockey David Egan.

“He worked nicely going into it, but first time on the dirt, you never know. He did have the benefit of a wide draw last year and we were thrilled the way he ran,” Gosden told a Saudi Cup press conference. “I think he's a mile-and-a-quarter horse, very much so. He's got a great stride, great tactical speed and a powerful finish. I think that is his perfect trip. Whether we stretch him out to a mile and a half one day, I don't know.”

“This race is run on the dirt and at a very different tempo. You need a wide draw,” he said. “If it was a mile and quarter it would suit us a lot better, but it's very fast. The Americans go hard and it's not a race with any hiding places. He's had a nice down time building up to this. He's a genuine horse, he enjoys his training. He's not a horse who requires a massive amount of work, so to that extent he's the right type to get ready early in the year.”

Frankie Dettori will be aboard Global Giant (GB) (Shamardal) for Gosden in the Middle Distance Turf Cup. They were second in the Bahrain International Trophy last November.

“He came back in great order and breezed nicely this [Wednesday] morning,” Gosden added. “The horse was as frustrated as the jockey and the owner and the trainer, but he got too far back and got there too late. The wire came up a stride and a half too soon, but that's racing. He's fine, he's going for the Middle Distance. It will be a tough race. Distance-wise it's probably the top end of his range. He's got a very good chance and he's in good form right now.”

Gosden will also take another crack at the Saudi Derby and will send G3 Round Tower S. hero New Treasure (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}). The newly gelded chestnut was acquired for 90,000gns by Voute Sales on behalf of Najd Stud out of the Tattersalls Autumn HIT Sale after being sold by breeder/owner/trainer Jim Bolger.

“He was in the horses-in-training sale and Jim was selling, so you have to have a sense of reality about that. He didn't go for a great deal of money,” said Gosden. “The horse came here and the owners wanted to aim him at this race. “He won a Group 3 over six furlongs on soft ground. He's not run over a mile before, but we're hopeful he'll get it. He's on a one-way ticket. He races and stays there to race with the local horses. He's very genuine and is a giver. He's a fun horse to run in the race and it a great way of going down there–a Group 3 winner and going for the Saudi Derby.”

‘Maturing All At The Right Time’: Undefeated Rebel’s Romance Targeting Saudi Derby, UAE Derby

One of the most exciting horses in training in the UAE is Godolphin's undefeated Rebel's Romance, who has exited his thrilling victory last week (over HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Mouheeb) in the UAE 2000 Guineas Trial in proper order. The proverbial sky is the limit for the son of Dubawi, with many exciting options ahead the Charlie Appleby trainee.

“Rebel's Romance is in good form,” Appleby reported. “He came out of the race well and I'm pleased with what he would have learned. He's got back into a nice rhythm at home and the plan is obviously to keep an eye on the Guineas and then hopefully going on to Saudi, but physically I think we'll see some improvements and he's maturing all at the right time.”

The $125,000 UAE 2000 Guineas (G3) over one mile is slated for Feb. 4, while the $1.5 million Saudi Derby is 16 days later over the same distance. Options thereafter include the $150,000 Al Bastakiya (Listed) over the same 9.5 furlongs (March 6) as the $750,000 UAE Derby (G2) on Dubai World Cup's undercard three weeks later.

Mouheeb, per his connections, also remains under consideration for all of the above.

The UAE Derby awards to the winner 100 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
