Saudi Cup Promoted to Group 1 Status

Saudi Arabia's $20-million Saudi Cup has been awarded Group 1 status beginning in 2022 it was announced during Monday's virtual meeting of the Executive Council of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA).

The move follows the promotion of both Saudi Arabia and Bahrain from Part III to Part II of the ICS Book by the International Grading and Race Planning Advisory Committee (IRPAC). In addition, the Neom Turf Cup, Saudi Derby, STC 1,351 Turf Sprint, Riyadh Dirt Sprint and Red Sea Turf, as well as Bahrain's Bahrain International Trophy have all gained Group 3 status. A trio of races are now considered international listed races-the Al Methaq Cup, His Majesty the King's Cup and His Royal Crown Prince Cup-all in Bahrain. The Society of International Thoroughbred Auctioneers (SITA) approved the measures.

Also, during the meeting led by IFHA Chair Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, terms began for Jim Gagliano, Brian Kavanagh, Masayuki Goto, and Horacio Esposito as Vice-Chairs of the IFHA. The Chair and Vice-Chairs of the Federation will serve a three-year mandate from 2021 to 2024. Both Bruce Sherwin, Director of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing and Dr. Paull Khan, Secretary-General of the European and Mediterranean Horseracing Federation (EMHF) were appointed to the IFHA Executive Council.

That body also endorsed the chair and nominations to the IFHA Finance Committee, which will be chaired by Jim Lawson of Woodbine Entertainment Group. Oscar Bertoletti, CEO of OSAF; Olivier Delloye, CEO of France Galop; Suzanne Eade, Chief Executive for Horse Racing Ireland; and Greg Nichols, Director of Racing Australia, constitute the Finance Committee. The Governance Committee Chair will be BHA Chief Executive Julie Harrington. A new Commercial and Marketing Committee was formed, with Olivier Delloye to serve as its chair.

The Executive Council also approved the selection of key positions for its global Executive Office, and Andrew Harding will continue to lead the Executive Office as the Federation's Executive Director. Andrew Chesser, Manager of Registration Services for The Jockey Club (USA) and previously Secretary General for the IFHA; James Ogilvy, Executive Manager, International and Racing Regulation at The Hong Kong Jockey Club and previously Technical Advisor for the IFHA; and Henri Pouret, Managing Director, Racing Operations for France Galop, were all named Directors of the IFHA global Executive Office. Charlatan To Stand For $50,000 At Hill ‘N’ Dale

Multiple Grade 1 winner Charlatan will stand the 2022 breeding season at Hill 'n' Dale Farm at Xalapa for a fee of $50,000 live foal stands and nurses.

His meteoric rise to stardom began at Santa Anita in February of his three year old year where he won at first asking by 5 3/4 lengths, stopping the clock in 1:08.85 and receiving TDN Rising Star status. In his next start, less than 30 days later, this time at a mile, the powerful and perfectly-made son of Speightstown served notice of his raw talent with an effortless 10 1/4 length romp which landed him on the lips of every turf writer in America as one of the top colts of his crop.

His tour-de-force 6 length win at Oaklawn in the mile and an eighth Grade 1 $500,000 Arkansas Derby resulted in him being installed as the favorite for the Kentucky Derby (G1). In the year of COVID which reshuffled the racing calendar, Charlatan re-emerged in December, capping off his three year old campaign, off an 8 month layoff, with a brilliant performance in the Grade 1 Malibu at 7 furlongs, winning by 4 1/2 lengths. His final career start came in the $20 million Saudi Cup, where the heavily-favored Charlatan who made all the pace, locked horns with recent Whitney (G1) winner Knicks Go, only to be nabbed at the wire by Mishriff in an effort which many have described as a valiant performance.

He is by the right horse in Speightstown, and he has all the right horses in his pedigree. I think this is the most highly credentialed horse we've brought to the farm in terms of performance, pedigree, and speed; all those elements we feel are requisites of very important horses. Curlin was a very important horse – a great racehorse and Horse of the Year – but this brilliance is hard to find. Succinctly, Charlatan has everything I value in a stallion in spades.”

Charlatan retires to stud with a record of four wins and a second from 5 starts with earnings over $4 million.

Multiple Grade I winner Charlatan (Speightstown–Authenticity, by Quiet American) will stand the 2022 breeding season for a fee of $50,000 live foal stands and nurses, Hill 'n' Dale Farm announced Wednesday. Named a 'TDN Rising Star' after a tour-de-force debut victory, Charlatan went on to capture the GI Arkansas Derby and GI Runhappy Malibu S. before finishing second in the $20-million Saudi Cup in his career finale.

“I have been looking forward to having this horse,” said John Sikura, owner of Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa. “He is a brilliant physical specimen. He is by the right horse in Speightstown, and he has all the right horses in his pedigree. Bred by Stonestreet Stables, Charlatan was a $700,000 Keeneland September buy. Owned by the partnership of SF Racing LLC, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables LLC, Stonestreet Stables LLC, Frederick Hertrich III, John D. Fielding and Golconda Stables and trained by Bob Baffert, he retired with a record of 5-4-1-0 and earnings of $4,047,200.

Mandaloun Sidelined With Sore Foot, Will Point to Saudi Cup

Juddmonte Farms' leading 3-year-old Mandaloun (Into Mischief), most recently seen capturing the GI TVG.com Haskell S. via disqualification, has a sore foot and will likely miss the remainder of the season's major races, Juddmonte racing manager Garrett O'Rourke confirmed to TDN. The homebred will now target the 2022 Saudi Cup.

“It's nothing serious, the horse just needs six weeks off, but unfortunately six weeks off at this time of year rules out some important races,” O'Rourke said.

O'Rourke added that the goal for Mandaloun is now “100%” the Saudi Cup “because there's no way you can start back in October and make a race in November, so what's the point? He's been on the go since this time last year, so it probably makes sense, every horse needs a little bit of a break sometime and it makes more sense now to fit the program to the Saudi Cup.”

Named a 'TDN Rising Star' off an eventful debut score last October at Keeneland, Mandaloun stamped himself as an early GI Kentucky Derby contender with a victory in the GII Risen Star S. at Fair Grounds. Following a disappointing sixth as the favorite in the GII Louisiana Derby, the Brad Cox trainee bounced back with a strong second in the Run for the Roses, a race he likely will be awarded in the future due to the drug positive of winner Medina Spirit (Protonico). Annexing the Pegasus S. next out at Monmouth, the bay came up just short in a stretch battle with Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow) in the Haskell before that rival was taken down for interfering with Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow).
