Benbatl to Resurface in Europe

Godolphin's Benbatl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), a Group 1 winner in Australia, Germany and Dubai, will not compete in either the Dubai World Cup Carnival or the Saudi Cup. The 7-year-old entire will instead make his next appearance in Europe according to his trainer Saeed bin Suroor. The bay signed off last year with a third in the G2 Joel S. at Newmarket on Sept. 25.

“Benbatl will not run in Dubai or Saudi Arabia this year–we'll keep him for a European campaign and look to get him out in May,” said trainer Saeed bin Suroor. “He's still a good horse, but this year we are looking for better results from him. Last year didn't go his way–the ground never seemed right, [and] there is no point running him on soft.

“He's not going to stud just yet, anyway. We've got him for this year, then we'll keep options open. Everything over a mile, nine furlongs and a mile and a quarter is suitable for him, that's what we think.”

Fasig-Tipton Horses Of Racing Age Sale Grad Scars Are Cool On Saudi Cup Trail

Scars Are Cool, a graduate of the 2020 July Horses of Racing Age Sale, captured the $100,000 Open Imported Horse Stake at King Abdullaziz Racecourse in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Jan. 15.

The race is part of the series that leads up the $20-million Saudi Cup scheduled for Feb. 20.

Scars Are Cool was sold for $175,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton July Horses of Racing Age Sale to Ahmad Alabdullatif, a breeder based in Riyadh.

An advisor to several Saudi Arabian racing operations, Alabdullatif identified several candidates at the sale for consideration and Scars Are Cool emerged as the top choice of his eventual buyer, Mohammed Omar I. Alsakan. Lexington-based bloodstock agent Thomas Clark signed the ticket on behalf of Mr. Alabdullatif and the buyer.

Scars Are Cool was consigned to the sale by Claiborne Farm, agent for Sagamore Farm.

Princess Zoe Not Traveling to Saudi Arabia

Group 1 winner Princess Zoe (Ger) (Jukebox Jury {Ire}) will not go to Saudi Arabia for the Saudi Cup card, her trainer Tony Mullins revealed on Sunday. The charismatic grey enjoyed a progressive campaign in 2020, taking the Listed Oyster S. at Galway in September, before adding the G1 Qatar Prix du Cadran on Oct. 3, her fifth-straight win. Her final race of the season was a fourth in the G1 Prix Royal-Oak.

“We’ve decided against it. I’d love to go, but we thought the ground wouldn’t be suitable for her,” said Mullins. “We want to run her with a cut in the ground, and it’s unlikely over there. We’d have loved the money–but we’ll do right by her. I’d imagine we’d start in a suitable race at The Curragh if there is one, if not the Vintage Crop at Navan–that’s the plan.

“If it looks like having a crack at the best over a mile and a half is possible we’ll do it–if not we won’t. We believe she’ll be as effective over a mile and a half, and if we’re wrong the Cadran is always there. We’d like to prove it’s possible, but if it’s not that’s it. It’s nice to be thinking of these races, anyway.”
