Saturday Insights: $1.3m Into Mischief OBS April Grad Makes Santa Anita Debut

The rail-drawn URBAN LEGEND (Into Mischief) is one of three Bob Baffert trainees to debut in the Santa Anita finale. Out of MSW Singing Kitty (Ministers Wild Cat), the bay colt went for $300,000 at Keeneland September before bringing $1.3 million at the OBS April Sale. He is campaigned by Morplay Racing LLC, Rosedown Racing Stables, LLC and Kerri Radcliffe.

The Hall of Fame conditioner will also saddle Nysos (Nyquist), who was purchased by Baoma Corp. for $550,000 at OBS April, and British Isles (Justify). Out of GSW Purely Hot (Pure Prize) and a half-brother to GI American Pharoah S. champ Eight Rings (Empire Maker), the latter is owned by Mrs. John Magnier, Derrick Smith and Michael Tabor.

Also set for his unveiling is Tracker (Curlin), who is out of GI Darley Alcibiades S. heroine Gomo (Uncle Mo). The $250,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $900,000 OBS March graduate is campaigned by Talla Racing, West Point Thoroughbreds, Woodford Racing and Robert and DeLynn Abernathy. TJCIS PPS

Tommy Town Thoroughbreds and trainer Jeff Engler send out Bedazzle 'Em (American Pharoah) for her first start. The $750,000 Keeneland September graduate counts GIII Schuylerville S. winner Just Cindy (Justify) as a half sister.

She'll face Red White and Blue Racing's Denim and Pearls (Into Mischief), who sold for $500,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale. The Brad Cox trainee is a full-sister to GIII Robert B. Lewis S. hero Newgate.

Whitham Thoroughbreds homebred Aunt Fannie (Uncle Mo), trained by Ian Wilkes, is a half-sister to GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. victor McCraken (Ghostzapper) and GIII Dogwood S. winner Four Graces (Majesticperfection). TJCIS PPS

Saturday Insights: $625k OBS Grad Makes First Start At Delaware

AMERICAN WAR HERO (Constitution) will make his first start for owner Boardshorts Racing. The dark bay colt brought $165,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Yearling Sale in July before running a furlong at 10.1 during the breeze show and then pinhooked for $625,000 at the OBS March Sale. The Graham Motion trainee is out of GISP Libby's Tail (Tiz Wonderful) who also produced a yearling colt by Improbable that went for $135,000 at the Keeneland September Sale to Michael Rullo. At Churchill on Saturday, Ken McPeek debuts Thorny (Violence), a $325,000 Keeneland September buy out of SP Boule (Exchange Rate). She was in-foal with the dark bay filly when she sold to Rhianon Farms at the Keeneland Novemeber Sale in 2020 for $160,000. Out of an extended female family which includes MGISW Tates Creek (Rahy) and her son, Australian multiple group stakes winner Spirit Ridge (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), Boule counts GIII W.L. McKnight hero Tide of the Sea (English Channel) as a half-brother.

Also entered is Coffeepot Stables' Starina (Candy Ride {Arg}), who will take her first crack at racing for trainer Wayne Catalano. The chestnut filly out of SW Rebridled Dreams (Unbridled's Song) is a half-sister to GI Toyota Blue Grass S. victor Carpe Diem (Giant's Causeway), GII Twinspires.com Fair Grounds Oaks heroine Farrell (Malibu Moon) and to the dams of current in-training runners SW Salute the Stars (Candy Ride {Arg}) and SW Wonderful Justice (Justify). Santa Anita is underway and there we find homebred Bolt At Midnight (Bolt d'Oro) on debut for Ruis Racing. The dark bay colt's third dam, who is a full-sister to MGISW Seeking the Gold (Mr. Propsector), is responsible for GII Gotham S. winner Survivalist (Danzig).

Just to his outside, is Bartholdy (Mendelssohn) owned by Kaleem Shah. The $300,000 OBS April grad includes among her extended female family MGSW Chocolate Ride (Candy Ride {Arg}), GI Hollywood Starlet S. victoress Killer Graces (Conagree), and GI Hollywood Gold Cup S. hero There Goes Harvard (Will Take Charge). Saturday’s Racing Insights: Omaha Beach Filly Debuts Around Two Turns Over Turf

WITHOUT CAUSE (Omaha Beach) tackles two turns over the turf in this debut run. Dam Without (Tiznow), out of MGSW Mary's Follies (More Than Ready), is a half-sister to GIII Transylvania S. victor Night Prowler (Giant's Causeway), champion female turf horse Regal Glory (Animal Kingdom) and Japanese champion dirt horse Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah). Trained by Mark Casse, the $180,000 Keeneland September Yearling sale graduate will have Adam Beschizza in the saddle.

Also out for her first test is Bridewood Farm homebred Moshine (Uncle Mo), a Brendan Walsh trainee slated to be ridden by Declan Cannon. The bay filly is out of GI Chandelier S. heroine Moonshine Memories (Malibu Moon)–a half to the dam of MGSW Souper Hoity Toity (Uncle Mo)–who was purchased for $3.4 million by West Bloodstock in foal to Into Mischief at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Fall Mixed Sale. The resulting filly went for $475,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale to North Hills Co. Moshine hails from an extended female family under her third dam which includes Horse of the Year Favorite Trick (Phone Trick) and his half-sister's MGSW son, Favorite Tale (Tale of the Cat). Saturday Insights: Into Mischief Filly Looks To Swipe Saratoga Debut

6th-SAR, $136.5K, Msw, 2yo, f, 6f, 2:31 p.m.

With some bullet works under her belt at Saratoga (Aug. 23, 3f, :36.00, 1/11), $475,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase SHOP LIFTING (Into Mischief) heads to the post for Team Spoor for her debut. The bay filly's dam GI Personal Ensign S. heroine Miss Shop (Deputy Minister) is a half-sister to the dam of GISW Power Broker (Pulpit) dam and GSW Trappe Shot (Tapit). She also produced GIII Miss Grillo S. winner Tin Type Gal (Tapit). Trained by Tony Dutrow, she will be ridden by Jose Ortiz.

“I don't know what's going to happen–American Pharoah lost the first time–but I have my opinion, and that is, looking at her, you think, 'Wow,'” Dutrow said. “If you told me she was a 5-year-old, I wouldn't even question it. When I see her out there on the racetrack, it's like few can do. I firmly believe that she's a nicer kind and time will tell just how nice.”

Also entered for her bow is Lady de Berry (Practical Joke), who sold to Leigh Bloodstock at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale for $185,000 and then went for $270,000 at the OBS March Sale. The Chad Brown trainee's dam Tortuga Lady (Thunder Gulch) is a full-sister to GI Kentucky Derby runner-up Invisible Ink. She is responsible for SW Princess Arabella (Any Given Saturday), whose own daughter Tapella (Tapit) foaled GII Golden Rod S. hero Hoosier Philly (Into Mischief). TJCIS PPS

Del Mar cards a juvenile race of its own as Sense (Street Sense) is the lone first timer in the two turn field. The Richard Mandella trainee is out of GII La Canada S. winner Spellbound (Bernardini), who counts GIII Dwyer S. victor Kid Cruz (Lemon Drop Kid) as a half-brother.
