Saratoga Backstretch Clinic To Celebrate Opening Next Tuesday

Officials from the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will welcome Assemblymember Carrie Woerner, philanthropist John Hendrickson and representatives from Saratoga Hospital and the Backstretch Employee Service Team (BEST) for a ribbon-cutting to celebrate the opening of the new Saratoga Backstretch Clinic next Tuesday, July 11, the organization said in a release Friday.

The new clinic will allow Saratoga Hospital and BEST to expand on the existing healthcare services offered to members of NYRA's backstretch community. The modern healthcare clinic was constructed over the past year to replace a doublewide trailer that previously housed on-site healthcare services at Saratoga Race Course.

As a tribute to his late wife, Marylou Whitney, John Hendrickson funded construction of the new clinic. The opening continues Mrs. Whitney and Mr. Hendrickson's long-running commitment to the backstretch community.

Since Mrs. Whitney's death in 2019, Mr. Hendrickson has continued to lend his support to a variety of initiatives, including backstretch appreciation dinners, English as a Second Language classes and bingo nights.

NYRA And NMRHF Partner At Saratoga Walk Of Fame

The New York Racing Association. Inc. (NYRA) will partner at Saratoga Race Course establishing the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame as the official curator of the space currently known as the Saratoga Walk of Fame, the organization said in a release Thursday.

Through this collaboration, the Hall of Fame will present fans with a rotating display of informational panels, multi-media presentations and a variety of relevant historic artifacts culled from its extensive collections.

Located behind the grandstand just across the pedestrian path from the Miller Time Fourstardave Sports Bar, the open-air Walk of Fame is easily recognizable from oversized displays of racing memorabilia and its Saratoga-style, turret-spiked slate roof.

“We're excited to share some of the most popular items in our collection at Saratoga Race Couse, a place synonymous with racing history,” said Hall of Fame and Communications Director Brien Bouyea. “We hope it will help fans feel and appreciate the pageantry of our sport, so much of which happened right in Saratoga, and we're grateful to NYRA for the opportunity.”

Among the items to be featured this summer are informational panels about each Hall of Fame category; panels and bios in recognition of the Hall of Fame Class of 2023; video features of select Hall of Fame members and a virtual reality jockey experience.

The Hall of Fame will present rotating trophies of historical significance from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET each Friday of the meet.

Elite Power And Cody’s Wish Breeze At Saratoga For Mott

Juddmonte's GISW Elite Power (Curlin) and MGISW Cody's Wish (Curlin) both worked for trainer Bill Mott over the Oklahoma training track at Saratoga this past week.

Elite Power went three-eighths in 36.02 on Saturday, June 24 in his first breeze since his 1 3/4-length score in the GII True North S. on Belmont Stakes Day. The 5-year-old chestnut is targeting Saratoga's GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. on July 29.

“He worked fine. We'll run in the Vanderbilt,” the Hall of Fame trainer said.

Mott indicated that Elite Power's main year-end goal is likely a title defense in the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint.

Also a 5-year-old, Cody's Wish covered a half-mile in 48.48 seconds on Monday, June 26 in his first breeze back since winning the GI Metropolitan H. on June 10 at Belmont Park.

“It was a nice breeze, very smooth,” Mott said.

Winner in 9-of-13 starts, Cody's Wish remains under consideration for Saratoga's GI Whitney H. on Aug. 5 that offers a “Win and You're In” berth to the GI Breeders' Cup Classic.

“That's possible,” Mott said of the Whitney. “It's [nine furlongs] always a question. He's won his Breeders' Cup going a two turn-mile, but he's not won at a mile and an eighth. You never know until they do it.”

Agenda Set For 3rd Annual Racing & Gaming Conference At Saratoga

Pat Brown, the director of The Racing and Gaming Conference at Saratoga, knows what makes an agenda tick. He has seen his fair share of seemingly endless Power Points, glazed-over eyes and the attendees that surf the Internet in an attempt to multitask. The best way to combat the conference malaise? Just a healthy dose of fun.

“I've spent over 40 years of in and out of government, thinking about and writing about the gaming and horse racing industry,” said Brown, a former advisor to New York's Governor Mario Cuomo and an attorney that lives just south of Albany. “I want everyone to come away from this conference having learned something interesting, but most of all, I want them to have fun.”

As the director of the what will be the third installment of this hybrid conference that will be held at the Hilton in Saratoga Springs, New York from Aug. 14-16, Brown and his planning committee have put forth yet another stellar card. Once again, those in attendance will take in cutting-edge topics under the umbrella of racing and gaming with an ambitious schedule just out this week.

This year's slate runs the gambit when it comes to angles and there is something for everyone that is interested in the intersection between these two worlds. “We've got something for lawyers, thorny issues, where the little guy fits in and how technology shapes and impacts the racetrack and the casino,” said Brown.

After an opening reception at the Adelphi Hotel on Monday, Aug. 14, the conference shifts into high gear Tuesday with experts that will speak on the following topics:

  • New York Casino Expansion to New York City and Surrounding Counties: Is the Finish Line in Sight?
  • Consolidation of Gaming: Status and Implications
  • Tribal Digital Gaming: Has the Moment Finally Arrived?
  • Technology and Gaming: New Challenges, New Solutions
  • The Implications of Exclusion for Racetracks and Casinos
  • Consumer Protections and the Federalization of Gaming

“We want this conference to not be so New York-centric,” said Brown. “The way you do that is by thinking broadly and topics like tribal gaming, regulatory issues and legal questions like exclusion, are all applicable across state lines.”

Sandwiched within day one is a lunch lineup which includes an address by Stacie Clark Rogers of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and a keynote delivered by Joe Asher, President of IGT Sports Betting. “Joe's is coming to keep us energized, entertained because I think lunch needs to give everyone a break from the conference,” Brown said.

On day two, the conference concludes with four sessions that deal with aspects of racing and wagering, including:

  • Harness Racing: An Industry in Decline–or in Transformation?
  • Historical Horse Racing Machines: The Tail Wagging the Horse?
  • HISA–Legal Limbo and Regulatory Reluctance
  • Racing's Changing Customer Base, CRWs and the Future of Betting

Each of these hot-button issues draw from an arc of past precedent and are extremely significant to the future of the horse racing industry. “Not everything is about Thoroughbreds,” said Brown, who has also owned shares in racehorses. “We want to expand the vision to harness racing because it has much to teach us about statutory issues concerning aspects like the minimum number of race days.”

Brown knows that a panel concerning HISA is important, but he wanted to find a way to zero in on something specific. How state regulators are handling the current situation seemed appropriate. He also understands that conference attendees will be particularly keen to hear about the impact of Historical Horse Racing Machines and the power behind Computerized Robotic Wagering groups. “I have no doubt that those sessions will generate some interesting questions and debate, especially when everyone is talking about the impact on track handle,” said Brown.

Wrapping up the conference, some 50 attendees who purchase tickets will have the opportunity to take in the Saratoga meet along The Spa Veranda. Pat Brown's idea of fun, indeed.
