Baffert Duo Takes On Santa Ysabel

Bob Baffert brings a strong hand into Sunday's local prep for the GI Kentucky Oaks in Santa Anita's GIII Santa Ysabel S. Leading the charge is Eda (Munnings), last out winner of the GI Starlet S. Dec.4 where she defeated fellow Santa Ysabel contender Cairo Memories (Cairo Prince) by a gamhalf-length. She'll be looking for her fourth stakes victory in a row after also decisively winning both the Desi Arnaz S. and the Anoakia S. last fall.

Not to be outdone by her stablemate, Under the Stars (Pioneerof the Nile) posted her own 3/4-length victory Jan. 8th in the GII Santa Ynez S. Though her recent efforts have all been sprinting, this half to Bodemeister has both the pedigree to cover the longer distance and the speed to overcome her far outside draw. Her speed figures have been on the rise since finishing a distant third to Eda in the Desi Arnaz S., including a career high 91 Beyer Speed Figure in her win in the Santa Ynez.

While she missed a planned start in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies due to surgery to remove a bone chip in her left ankle, 'TDN Rising Star' Ain't Easy (Into Mischief) certainly showed more than enough class as a 2-year-old to earn a place in this field. Though she's been working consistently, she'll be tested coming off a five-month layoff with her last race being a 4 3/4-length victory in the GII Chandelier S. back Oct. 1 where she defeated stablemate Desert Dawn (Cupid), who was six-lengths back in third and also runs here.

Santa Ysabel Rematch in Santa Anita Oaks

After only a head separated Beautiful Gift (Medaglia d'Oro) and Moraz (Empire Maker) in a thrilling renewal of the GIII Santa Ysabel S. Mar. 7, the two sophomore fillies will meet again in Saturday's GII Santa Anita Oaks.

The streaking Baoma Corp homebred Beautiful Gift, a half-sister to the Chu Family's GIII Sunland Derby hero and Bridlewood Farm sire Chitu (Henny Hughes), graduated by a half-length at second asking in her previous trip to the post for Bob Baffert Oct. 23.

The rail-drawn Don Alberto homebred Moraz, an 11-length maiden winner second out in Arcadia Jan. 8, was third behind the sidelined Moonlight d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) two starts back in the GIII Las Virgenes S. Feb. 6. Moraz's dam Malvinia (A.P. Indy), an $800,000 purchase at the 2013 FTKNOV sale, is a half-sister to the dam of Spendthrift stallion Temple City.

Godolphin homebred Javanica (Medaglia d'Oro), runner-up in four straight stakes tries, returns to her division after giving males all they could handle in the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Feb. 13. She came up a neck short to favored Rombauer (Twirling Candy) that day, who returns in Saturday's GII Toyota Blue Grass S. at Keeneland. The half-sister to recent The Very One S. heroine Antoinette (Hard Spun) makes her first start on dirt in the Oaks.

Medaglia d’Oro Filly Gets Up in Time in Santa Ysabel

She had to be worked on early in Sunday's GIII Santa Ysabel S. at Santa Anita and seemed an unlikely winner as late as the eighth pole, but Baoma Corporation's Beautiful Gift (Medaglia d'Oro) produced a strong rally in deep stretch to nail Moraz (Empire Maker) in the last jump while making her first start since October.

A debut third behind re-opposing GSW barnmate Kalypso (Brody's Cause) going 5 1/2 furlongs Sept. 5 at Del Mar, the homebred stretched out to a local mile Oct. 23 and surged in the closing strides to get up by a half-length as the odds-on chalk.

Off as the 3-1 third choice in this four-horse group as Kalypso was knocked down to 3-5, the bay was away without issue and found a good spot in a pocketed third as the chalk dictated terms by a measured length through a modest :23.95 quarter. Stalking Moraz turned up the heat just a touch past a :48.13 half and those two appeared to leave Beautiful Gift behind as she was pushed along by John Velazquez at the top of the far turn. Moraz pulled even with Kalypso three furlongs from home and started to do the better work soon after, kicking clear into the final furlong. Beautiful Gift began to uncoil her best stride right about then, however, and had just enough racetrack to charge alongside the leader and get her head down first on the wire. Kalypso was third.

“I didn't think Johnny was going to get there and all of a sudden she kicked in, and she's really good,” said winning trainer Bob Baffert. “We gave her some time. She got really light on us. The further the better for her. I didn't think she got there until I saw the super slow-mo, but I'm just happy that they ran well. It's nice to get these fillies, it's all I have for the Oaks, so it's fun.”

Pedigree Notes:

With the victory, Beautiful Gift becomes the 150th stakes winner and 78th graded stakes winner for 22-year-old super-sire Medaglia d'Oro. She is the second black-type performer out of Sea Gift, who won her only career start as a 3-year-old in England, following Chitu, who captured the 2014 GIII Sunland Derby before running third, beaten less than a length by Shared Belief (Candy Ride {Arg}), in that year's GI Malibu S. Second dam Ocean Queen is a GSW half-sister to MGSW Dance Parade (Gone West), who in turn produced MG1SW marathoner Leading Light (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). A $450,000 RNA at Keeneland November in 2014, Sea Gift has a juvenile Arrogate colt named Mwari and was bred to Justify last spring.

Baffert vs. McCarthy in Santa Ysabel

Sunday's five-horse GIII Santa Ysabel S. features runners from just two barns, with Hall of Famer Bob Baffert represented by three fillies and Mike McCarthy saddling the other two. Baffert-trained Kalypso (Brody's Cause) stands out on speed figures, and boasts a two-back victory in the GII Santa Ynez S. sprinting here Jan. 3. Also a winner of the six-panel Anoakia S. here last October, the $240,000 Fasig-Tipton July buy was last seen finishing second as a front-running favorite in the one-mile GIII Las Virgenes S. Feb. 6. Baoma Corp. homebred Beautiful Gift (Medaglia d'Oro) was third, one spot behind Kalypso, in a Del Mar maiden special weight in September. She's been off since breaking through over track and trip Oct. 23. Heels Up (Twirling Candy) most recently finished third in Del Mar's Desi Arnaz S. sprinting in November.

McCarthy pupil Moraz (Empire Maker) aired by 11 lengths over this strip at second asking Jan. 8, and was one spot behind Kalypso in the Las Virgenes. A Real Hero (Exaggerator) adds blinkers off a third-out Golden Gate graduation going two turns Feb. 15.
