1/ST Issues Statement on Baffert Suspension

Officials at 1/ST, the consumer-facing brand of The Stronach Group–parent company of a portfolio of several California racetracks and/or training facilities–have issued a statement in the aftermath of the 90-day suspension handed down to trainer Bob Baffert.

The statement, in its entirety, reads: “The California Horse Racing Board announced on Saturday, Apr. 2 that “[trainer Bob Baffert is now suspended pursuant to CHRB Rule 1484].” California has thus reciprocated the suspension against Bob Baffert imposed by the Kentucky Racing Commission, which will begin on Apr. 4, 2022. Because of the CHRB's ruling, any trainer on the grounds at Santa Anita Park, Golden Gate Fields, San Luis Rey Downs or Los Alamitos Race Course who may be the transferee of horses from the Baffert barn will be required to apply for stalls for those horses from the Santa Anita or Golden Gate Fields racing offices, as applicable, for review and approval. A Change of Trainer form will also be required to be submitted in order to enter races following such transfer. Horses that are not transferred to a trainer in California will be required to leave the grounds prior to Apr. 4.

“Because the suspension is over 60 days, under the CHRB rules, during the term of the suspension, Mr. Baffert will be banned from all enclosures under the jurisdiction of the CHRB and Mr. Baffert shall not be permitted to be involved in the training of horses who have previously been under his care. Any trainer who may apply for stalls in anticipation of a transfer will be required to comply fully with any applicable restrictions.

“The CHRB rules require Baffert to vacate his barn at Santa Anita Park prior to the start of the suspension on Apr. 4, along with removing all signage, colors and training equipment belonging to the trainer. The closing day of Santa Anita's winter-spring season is June 19, 2022. The 90-day suspension from the KHRC concludes the following week.”

Santa Anita’s Runhappy Derby Day 5k Run & Walk Returns

Santa Anita's popular Runhappy Santa Anita Derby Day 5K Run & Walk returns following a two-year absence on Derby Day, Saturday, Apr. 9, with 5K post time at 8 a.m.

Deferred for the last two years due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Derby Day 5K has long been a springtime happening for participants ranging in ages from five years to 90-plus years of age.

“We are thrilled that the Runhappy Santa Anita Derby Day 5K Walk and Run is back, after two years due to the pandemic,” said Pete Siberell, Santa Anita's Director of Community Services and Special Projects. “For many thousands of people, this has been a Derby Day tradition since 1994.

“We are anticipating we'll have between 4,500 and 5,000 people either running or walking the 3.1 mile course, which ends with a lot of excitement on the inner training track. The race is a joint partnership between four iconic Arcadia entities, including not only Santa Anita Park, but the beautiful 127-acre LA County Arboretum and our two primary sponsors, Westfield Santa Anita and Methodist Hospital of Southern California.

“We also want to thank the City of Arcadia, which is providing police and fire staffing to help ensure the safety of everyone involved.”

Explainer: Official Ruling of the Board of Stewards Santa Anita Park Winter/ Spring Meet (Association) March 24, 2022 (Date) LATS Ruling #76 Having received notice of a Proposed Decision adopted by the California Horse Racing Board that the appeal of DMTD Ruling #45 (August 12, 2021) has been overruled, the original ruling is reinstated. Jockey Umberto Rispoli, is suspended for 4 racing days (April 1, 2, 3 and 8, 2022).

Penalty: Thirty-day suspension (all 30 days stayed)
Violation: Substance violation
Explainer: Having received notice of a Proposed Decision adopted by the California Horse Racing Board Trainer Ronald McAnally, who started Roses and Candy in the third race on November 22, 2020, at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, is suspended for thirty (30) days pursuant to California Horse Racing Board Rule #1887(Trainer or Owner to Insure Condition of Horse) for violation of California Horse Racing Board rules #1843(a)(b)(d) (Medication, Drugs and Other Substances) and #1843.1(a)(Prohibited Drug Substances – 7- Carboxy – Cannabidiol). In accordance with the Proposed Decision, all thirty (30) suspension days are stayed and Ronald McAnally is placed on probation for one year from the date of this ruling and may not have any violation of Class I, II or III drug positives. If Ronald McAnally violates the terms of his probation, the 30 days of stayed suspension shall be imposed following a noticed hearing. Explainer: Having received a report from the NYS Gaming Commission Equine Drug Testing Laboratory of the finding of Phenylbutazone in the post-race blood sample taken from Horse “Pendolino”( #8 ) which finished first (1st) in the 4th race on February 4, 2022, and having waived his right to appeal, Owner/Trainer Mr. Eduardo Jones is suspended for seven calandar days effective March 27, 2022 through April 2, 2022 inclusive, and fined the sum of five hundred ($500.00) dollars. Furthermore, the Stewards order horse “Pendolino” disqualified from any part of the purse and the purse redistributed as follows:

Fourth Annual Live Telethon to Benefit PDJF to Be Held Apr. 10

TVG, the New York Racing Association, Keeneland and Santa Anita will team with Hall of Fame jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild and other prominent racing personalities to raise money for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) Sunday, Apr. 10 for the fourth annual telethon to raise money for the PDJF. The event will be broadcast on both TVG and America's Day at the Races on FS2 in collaboration with NYRA and FOX Sports.

After missing 2020 due to the pandemic, the popular event returned in 2021 and raised $339,672. Once again, the horse racing industry will unite in support of jockeys who have suffered serious on-track injuries. Fan favorite jockeys of today and years past will be on hand live at call centers at Santa Anita and Keeneland from 12-6 p.m. ET as their schedule permits. Throughout the day, TVG and America's Day At The Races will be connecting with personalities and horsemen who have been involved with the PDJF's work.

“We sincerely appreciate the continued support of TVG, NYRA, 1/ST Racing and Keeneland in helping to raise critical funds for the PDJF and also raise awareness of its mission,” said Jockeys' Guild President and CEO Terry Meyocks. “With no guaranteed funding from the industry, this event is the major fundraiser for the organization which provides monthly monetary assistance to approximately 60 riders who have sustained catastrophic on-track injuries. Active and retired riders will be answering the phones to take donations while giving racing fans across the country the unique opportunity to speak and interact with their favorite jockeys.”

Jockeys participating in the event include retired stars Alex Solis, Chris McCarron, Don Brumfield, Ramon Dominguez, Laffit Pincay, Sandy Hawley, Mike Manganello, Shane Sellers, Donna Brothers and Steve Cauthen. They will be joined by Mike Smith, John Velazquez, Julian Leparoux, Corey Lanerie, Joe Bravo and Tyler Gaffalione alongside other prominent jockeys riding at Keeneland and Santa Anita that day.

“On behalf of the PDJF and our recipients, we are very appreciative for TVG providing this platform and hosting this annual telethon,” said Nancy LaSala, PDJF President. “The combined donations from the three telethons hosted in 2018, 2019 and 2021 has raised over three quarters of a million dollars for the PDJF. We were grateful to have the opportunity to host the telethon in October 2021 after close to a 30-month gap due to the pandemic and we are excited to be returning to the originally scheduled month of April to have this event.”

Callers who donate via the telethon will be entered in a drawing to win a pair of reserved tickets for Friday and Saturday at the 2022 Breeders' Cup World Championships Nov. 4-5 at Keeneland, donated by the Breeders' Cup and valued at $1,200 each. In addition to the Breeders' Cup tickets, there will be several other items available to win in a sweepstakes which will take place each hour of the telethon.

Since its foundation in 2006, PDJF has disbursed over $11 million to support disabled jockeys; the organization is 100% reliant on charitable donations.
