Saturday Insights: Shadwell Unveil Another Into Mischief Colt

Sponsored by Alex Nichols Agency
3rd-Gulfstream, $50K, Msw, 3yo, 6f, post time: 1:05 p.m. ET
One week after ‘TDN Rising Star’ Mutasaabeq made a victorious sophomore debut in the Mucho Macho Man S., Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell Stable is set to be represented by another son of Into Mischief in the form of first-time starter LAMUTANAATTY. Pegged as the 7-2 second choice on the morning line, the $177K Fasig-Tipton November weanling turned $700K Keeneland September yearling is out of a winning daughter of MSW Win’s Fair Lady (Dehere), a full-sister to MGSW/GISP Graeme Hall; and a half to GISW Harmony Lodge (Hennessy) and GSW Win McCool (Giant’s Causeway). Win’s Fair Lady is the dam of GSW First Passage (Giant’s Causeway), who bred GSW Berned (Bernardini). Lamutanaatty, who sold for $115K in utero at KEENOV in 2017, is bred on the same cross over Gone West-line mares as Into Mischief’s Grade I winners Authentic and Mia Mischief. TJCIS PPs

PRICEY NYQUIST FIRSTER DEBUTS AHEAD OF JANUARY SALE
5th-Gulfstream, $50K, Msw, 3yo, 6f, post time: 2:05 p.m. ET
Less than a week before he sells as part of the complete dispersal of the estate of the late Paul Pompa, Jr., UNTREATED (Nyquist) gets his career underway Saturday afternoon. A son of GSP Fully Living (Unbridled’s Song), the bay colt was knocked down for $550K at KEESEP in 2019, the most expensive of his sire’s 44 first-crop yearlings reported as sold that year. Untreated’s second dam, Half A.P. (Pulpit), is a half-sister to champion Halfbridled (Unbridled). Chad Brown trains the April foal and has given the call to Irad Ortiz, Jr. Untreated, whose year-younger half-sister by Medaglia d’Oro fetched $800K as KEESEP last fall, is cataloged as hip 1564 at Keeneland next Thursday. UNCLE MO COLTS DRAW INSIDE AND OUT GOING A MILE
7th-Gulfstream, $50K, Msw, 3yo, 1m, post time: 3:15 p.m. ET
ROSENQUIST (Uncle Mo) is a daughter of Not in Jest (Unbridled’s Song), a full-sister to ‘TDN Rising Star’ and GISW Cross Traffic, who was offered carrying this colt in utero at FTKNOV in 2017, but was led out unsold when bidding stalled out at $700K. The February-foaled bay, a $750K KEESEP acquisition, is the first foal from his dam, who is also responsible for the now juvenile colt Dr. Perry (Into Mischief), who made $690K at KEESEP in 2020; and a yearling filly by Medaglia d’Oro. First Task (Uncle Mo), a $300K KEENOV weanling, was successfully resold for $725K at KEESEP and is out of a daughter of SW Cascading (Smart Strike). The latter’s dam Teeming (Storm Cat), who produced GISW Streaming (Smart Strike) and SW Treasuring (Smart Strike), was a half-sister to GI Belmont S. winners Rags to Riches (A.P. Indy) and Jazil (Seeking the Gold), GSW Casino Drive and SW Man of Iron (Giant’s Causeway). TJCIS PPs

TOP-SELLING EXAGGERATOR COLT GETS GOING
7th-Santa Anita, $61K, Msw, 3yo, 1mT, post time: 6:05 p.m. ET
EXALTED JOY (Exaggerator) cost $400K as a KEESEP yearling, a price which was the joint most-expensive of Exaggerator’s 63 first-crop yearlings sold in 2019 and tops among his colts. The chestnut is out of Classic Joy (Kitten’s Joy), a daughter of MGSW & GISP Classic Stamp (Regal Classic), the dam of MSW Regal Conqueror (Sky Conqueror) and granddam of last year’s Breeders’ S. third English Conqueror (English Channel). Classic Joy was a $95K buyback at KEENOV in 2017. Earls Rock (Ire) (Fascinating Rock {Ire}) is an interesting foe making his U.S. debut. He was a first-out second Sept. 4 at Down Royal in Ireland to A Case of You (Ire) (Hot Streak {Ire}), who returned to take the G3 Anglesey S. in his next start. TJCIS PPs

Jolie Olimpica, Oleksandra Renew Rivalry in Las Cienegas

Fox Hill Farms’ Jolie Olimpica (Brz) (Drosselmeyer) and Team Valor’s Oleksandra (Aus) (Animal Kingdom), first and a slow-starting second, respectively when hooking up for the first time in last year’s GII Monrovia S., are the marquee names for Saturday’s GIII Las Cienegas S. at Santa Anita, a race short on numbers, but high on quality.

An undefeated Group 1 winner at home, Jolie Olimpica launched the U.S. portion of her career with a handy tally in this event last year and reported home a half-length to the good in the Monrovia in May. The chestnut was a bold second to Eclipse Award candidate Rushing Fall (More Than Ready) in the GI Jenny Wiley S. at Coolmore July 11 and was to have resurfaced in the GI Matriarch S. at Del Mar last month, only to have that comeback attempt derailed by a foot bruise. Hall of Famer Mike Smith retains the mount for Richard Mandella.

Oleksandra has faced the boys in her two most recent visits to the races, defeating Kanthaka (Jimmy Creed) by a neck in the GI Jaipur S. at Belmont June 20 before hitting the sidelines. She was set a bold task making her return to action as a 13-2 chance in the GI Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland Nov. 7, but always raced well back and was left far too much to do late, finishing ninth and beaten five lengths. The new, flat six-figure configuration at Santa Anita could work in her favor.

LNJ Foxwoods’ Lighthouse (Mizzen Mast) will look to be the fly in the ointment of the favorites. She acquitted herself nicely against her peers in 2020, running the talented Laura’s Light (Constitution) to three-parts of a length in the GIII Sweet Life S. last Februrary before closing the season with an 11-1 upset of the valuable Music City S. at Kentucky Downs Sept. 15. She was also a bang-up second against older fillies and mares in Del Mar’s Daisycutter H. in August.

Fighting Mad Makes Seasonal Bow in La Canada

Grade I winner Fighting Mad (New Year’s Day) looks to return to winning ways as she kicks off her 5-year-old season Saturday in the GIII La Canada S. at Santa Anita. Starting off last term with a third in the six-panel GIII Desert Stormer S. in May, the homebred scored a decisive victory over the re-opposing Hard Not to Love (Hard Spun) when stretched out to two turns in the GII Santa Maria S. just two weeks later. Capturing the GI Clement L. Hirsch S. next out at Del Mar in August, the bay was third when last seen in the GII Zenyatta S. in Arcadia Sept. 27.

Hard Not to Love, heroine of the 2019 GI La Brea S., captured the GII Santa Monica S. last February and was second in the GI Beholder Mile prior to her second in the Santa Maria. Failing to fire when sixth in the Clement Hirsch, the bay was a close second in the Zenyatta.

Fighting Mad’s stablemate Message (Warrior’s Reward) also makes her seasonal debut here. She was last seen finishing second to Proud Emma (Include) in the GIII Bayakoa S. at Los Alamitos Dec. 6.

Stronach 5: Three Tracks, Three On The Turf In Friday’s Wager

Friday's Stronach 5 will serve up an intriguing, competitive sequence of races from Laurel Park, Santa Anita Park and Gulfstream Park with three races on the turf and an industry-low 12-percent takeout.

The action begins at 3:55 ET with Laurel's eighth race and concludes a little more than an hour later with Gulfstream's 10th race, a mile event on the turf for 3-year-old maidens with a $50,000 price.

Laurel's eighth race, a $42,000 optional allowance claimer for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1 /16 miles, has a 5-2 morning-line favorite in Journeytothemoon, a son of Tourist who won first time out for trainer Mike Trombetta at six furlongs Nov. 21 at Laurel. Betcha by Golly comes into the race off a 2 ½ month layoff for trainer Graham Motion after finishing off-the-board in an allowance race at Keeneland. Leading trainer Claudio Gonzalez saddles Midwest Thoroughbreds Inc.'s Tuff But Fair.

After Laurel's ninth race, a claiming event for 4-year-olds and up at seven furlongs, the Stronach 5 heads to California and Santa Anita Park for the third leg of the sequence and Santa's Anita's third race, a maiden special weight event at a mile on the turf for California breds. Reddam Racing LLC's That Corey, a son of Square Eddie, is the 5-2 choice off a second-place finish at five furlongs on the turf at Del Mar. Trainer Doug O'Neill saddles Hail Freedom, a son of Box Score who finished fourth in his debut at Santa Anita Dec. 27 on the main track.

The last two legs of the sequence will be run at Gulfstream over the turf.

Gulfstream's ninth race, the fourth leg of the sequence, has a field of eight 4-year-old and up claimers going five furlongs. Newton Anner Stud Farm's Star Weaver is the 5-2 choice off a second-place finish under the same conditions Dec. 9. Our Destiny makes his first start at Gulfstream after spending last year competing mostly in state-bred races in New York.

The Stronach 5 concludes with Gulfstream's 10th race, a mile event on the turf for $50,000 maiden claimers. The wide-open affair has a tepid 7-2 choice in first-time starter Six Minus from the barn of leading trainer Todd Pletcher. Supplication, a son of Point of Entry, makes his first start on the turf for trainer Mark Casse while trainer Barclay Tagg sends out Tiz Tact Toe, fifth in a maiden special weight race at a mile at Gulfstream Dec. 5.

The Stronach 5 In the Money podcast, hosted by Jonathan Kinchen and Peter Thomas Fornatale, will be posted by 2 p.m. Thursday at InTheMoneyPodcast.com and will be available on iTunes and other major podcast distributors

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.
