Stronach 5 Rewards 46 Winning Ticket-Holders With $1,800

There were 46 winning tickets in Friday's Stronach 5 with each worth $1,800.80.

Friday's wager featured races from Pimlico Race Course, Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields along with an industry-low 12-percent takeout.

Friday's first two races of the Stronach 5 began at Pimlico and both races produced prices, with Judi Blue Eyes ($10.80) winning the eighth race, an allowance event at 1 1/16 miles on the turf, and American Patrol ($19.80) winning the ninth race, a $40,000 maiden special weight event for 3-year-olds.

The third leg of the Stronach 5, Gulfstream's ninth race at five furlongs on the turf, was won by 9-5 favorite Missing Link ($5.60). The Stronach 5 headed west for the last two legs of its popular Friday program. Santa Anita's third race was won by the 1-2 favorite Zabava ($3), who registered her eighth career victory and second in her last three starts. The Stronach 5 concluded with Golden Gate's second race and another heavy favorite in Arouse N Go ($4.80) getting a trip to the winner's circle.

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.

Del Mar’s ‘Ship & Win’ Program Expanded

Santa Anita Park and the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club have joined forces to expand upon Del Mar's “Ship & Win” program as out-of-state horses, who make their first California-based starts in May and June at Santa Anita, will still be eligible for Del Mar's purse incentives, beginning with their Summer Meet opener July 16. Effective May 1, out-of-state horses can start up to twice at Santa Anita through closing day of the current 2021 Winter/Spring Meet June 20 and still be eligible for Del Mar's Ship & Win program bonuses.

“This is a great enticement to out-of-state owners and horsemen to bring their horses here in advance of Del Mar,” said Santa Anita Director of Racing and Racing Secretary Chris Merz. “People around the country know Santa Anita and Del Mar provide world class training and racing opportunities.  We've very happy the folks at Del Mar and with the Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) recognize the importance of this comprehensive approach to attracting new horses.”

Merz added that any new horses participating in the Del Mar 'Ship & Win' program will also be eligible for the Santa Anita Sunshine Bonus, which will again be offered at the track's upcoming Autumn Meet, which opens Oct. 1.

Big ‘Cap Winner Idol To Miss Gold Cup; Long-Range Goal Still Breeders’ Cup Classic

Santa Anita Handicap winner Idol will miss the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup at Santa Anita May 31 due to an undisclosed issue that does not appear to be career-threatening.

Trainer Richard Baltas still has the Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar on Nov. 6 as a long-range goal for the 4-year-old son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin.

With his victory in Santa Anita's marquee race for older horses on March 6, Idol was in line for a $1,870,000 bonanza offered in the inaugural $1 Million Wild West Bonus.

The Gold Cup is leg two and the Big 'Cap was the first leg of the unique event formed by Santa Anita and Del Mar, which will present the third and final version with the running of the TVG Pacific Classic on Aug. 21.

Each race is run at the North American classic distance of a mile and a quarter, and including the $1 million bonus, any horse winning all three races would earn a total of $1,870,000.

“I wanted to train him up to the Gold Cup, but that's off,” Baltas said of Idol, owned by Calvin Nguyen. “I wasn't in a hurry with him because our ultimate goal is the Breeders' Cup Classic.”

Despite a slow start to Santa Anita's meet, Baltas currently is fifth in the race for training honors with 23 victories, and third in purse earnings with $1,865,400.

“We're doing fine,” Baltas said. “Forgetting all about wins, it's about making money and bringing the right horses in. I've got a lot of nice horses coming up for the fall, five or six coming off layoffs that are very talented horses.”

Among them are 2020 San Vicente Stakes runner-up Ginobili and last year's winner of the Grade II Las Virgenes Stakes, Venetian Harbor.

“I'm looking forward to running them again,” Baltas said.
