D’Amato Looks To Have Strong Hand In May 22 Honeymoon At Santa Anita

Santa Anita's leading trainer Phil D'Amato has two 3-year-old fillies primed for next Saturday's Grade 3 Honeymoon Stakes, streaking Going Global and Majestic Steps.

Both bred in Ireland, Going Global is unbeaten in three races in the United States, all stakes, the Grade 3 Sweet Life, the restricted China Doll and the Grade 3 Providencia, advancing in distance each time from six furlongs to a mile and an eighth.

The Honeymoon will be decided at a mile and an eighth.

Majestic Steps broke her maiden in her first U.S. start back on Jan. 2 and has had eventful trips in each of her races here, including the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes last out on May 1.

“Going Global proved last time a mile and an eighth wasn't a problem,” D'Amato said, speaking of the Providencia which the bay filly won by a neck despite being pinballed at the start.

“I gave her a bit of a freshening after three stakes wins in a row so I could have her ready for this race going into Del Mar.

“Majestic Steps is a hard-trying filly. If she can ever get her perfect trip, she has a chance, too, but Going Global is a more proven commodity at the moment.”

Majestic Steps' trouble lines in her five U.S. starts read like something out of a trainer's worst nightmare: “Bumped, checked twice, broke out, pinballed, three-wide turn, checked upper stretch and steadied.”

Sunday Insights: Seven-Figure Colt Gets Going at Santa Anita

Sponsored by Alex Nichols Agency

6th-SA, $61K, Msw, 3yo/up, 1m, post time: 6:50 p.m. ET
Dixiana Farms-bred AMERICAN ADMIRAL (American Pharoah) was purchased by Hunter Valley Farm for $340,000 at Keeneland November in 2018 and fetched $1.3 million from Jamie McCalmont on behalf of M.V. Magnier and Sarah Kelly at KEESEP the following fall. That price was the richest of 70 of his sire's second-crop yearlings to sell in 2019, bar the sales-topping $8.2 million Mandy Pope paid for the half-sister to Beholder (Henny Hughes) and Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday). The colt's stakes-winning second dam Alchemilla (Deputy Minister) was a daughter of champion Althea's full-sister Aquilegia (Alydar), whose produce include GSW & MGISP Bertolini (Danzig) and SW Amelia (Dixieland Band), dam of GSWs Rabbit Run (Tapit) and Asakusa Genki (Stormy Atlantic); MGSW & GISP Rainha da Bateria (Broken Vow); GSW & GISP Kindergarden Kid (Dynaformer); GSW Assateague (Stormy Atlantic); and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up He's Had Enough (Tapit). Glen Hill Farm's Craig Bernick is also a member of the board of directors for the Thoroughbred Idea Foundation, an organization that champions issues of importance to the Thoroughbred industry. Several months ago, TIF proposed the idea of making information, such as past performances, available to the betting public at no cost, and the aptly named FREE DATA (War Front) makes her first trip to the races Sunday. The gray filly is a daughter of former 'TDN Rising Star' Cassatt (Tapit), winner during her racing days of the GIII Monmouth Oaks before being purchased by Bernick's Elevage for $2.5 million in foal to Curlin at the 2016 Fasig–Tipton November sale. Free Data's third dam, MSW Justenuffheart (Broad Brush), was a half-sister to Kitten's Joy (El Prado {Ire}) and produced champion Dreaming of Anna (Rahy), the dam of GSW Dreamologist (Tapit), the late GISP Fast Anna (Medaglia d'Oro) and SP Big Dreaming (Declaration of War); GSW Lewis Michael (Rahy); and MGSW & GISP Justenuffhumor (Distorted Humor). Laurel River Tops Small Field in Lazaro Barrera

Juddmonte homebred Laurel River (Into Mischief) looks to become the latest graded winner for his red-hot sire in a four-horse renewal of Santa Anita's GIII Lazaro Barrera S. Saturday. Fifth as the favorite in his career bow at Santa Anita Oct. 3, the bay graduated by 4 1/4 lengths next out in Arcadia Apr. 3.

The Chosen Vron (Vronsky) seeks his first win in open company here. A dominant debut winner against fellow Cal-breds Dec. 27, the gelding checked in third behind Concert Tour (Street Sense) in the GII San Vicente S. Feb. 6 and captured the state-bred Echo Eddie S. last time Apr. 3.

Wipe the Slate (Nyquist) earned his diploma at second asking in Arcadia Dec. 26, but could only manage sixth behind GI Kentucky Derby hero Medina Spirit (Protonico) in the GIII Robert B. Lewis S. Jan. 30. A non-factor seventh last time in Aqueduct's GIII Gotham S. Mar. 6, the chestnut has been gelded in the interim and adds blinkers for this start.

Rounding out the quartet is Wipe the Slate's stablemate I'll Stand Taller (Square Eddie). A second-out graduate in Cal-bred company Mar. 20, the Reddam homebred was fourth last time in the state-bred Silky Sullivan S., which was rained off the turf and onto the Golden Gate synthetic Apr. 25.

Cal-Bred The Chosen Vron Has Just Three Rivals In Lazaro Barrera Stakes

Owner/trainer Eric Kruljac's talented California-bred The Chosen Vron heads a field of four sophomores going 6 ½ furlongs in Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 Lazaro Barrera Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

Named for the late Hall of Fame trainer who conditioned 1978 Triple Crown winner Affirmed, the Barrera, originally run at Hollywood Park in 1981, will be run for the 41st time and for the eighth time at Santa Anita on Saturday.

Juddmonte Farms' homebred Laurel River, a sharp 6 ½-furlong maiden winner in his second start on April 3 rates a solid chances as well.

The Chosen Vron, a chestnut gelding by the recently deceased Vronsky, was a scintillating first-out maiden winner at Santa Anita on Dec. 27, taking a 6 ½-furlong maiden special versus California-breds by 6 ¾ lengths.  Subsequently third, beaten 3 ¼ lengths by top sophomore Concert Tour going seven panels in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes Feb. 6, The Chosen Vron was much the best in a 1 ¼-length win versus statebreds in the 6 ½-furlong Echo Eddie Stakes April 3.

Owned by Kruljac, Robert Fetkin, John Sondereker and Richard Thornburgh, The Chosen Vron is out of the Tiz Wonderful mare Tiz Molly.  With two wins and a third from three starts, he has earnings of $150,600.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Laurel River, a Kentucky-bred colt by Into Mischief, out of the Empire Maker mare Calm Water, Laurel River pressed the early pace en route to a resounding 4 ¼ length maiden score, earning a Barerra-best 92 Beyer Speed figure in the process.  In what will be his third start, Laurel River figures to be head and head in the betting with The Chosen Vron.
