Medoro Stays Perfect In Blue Norther

Medoro's first stakes race looked eerily similar to her Del Mar debut Dec. 1 with both resulting in narrow, hard-closing wins. Stretching out from five furlongs to one mile Friday, the Peter Eutron trainee broke from an outside gate and was content to settle off the speed while kept wide and in the clear by Antonio Fresu. Racing in the back half of the field of nine, the 2-1 favorite began to make up ground into leader Chatalas and drew alongside that rival at the head of the lane. Unleashed into the final furlong, Medoro swept onto even terms on the outside and just out-dueled the runner up for the win. The stewards looked into a pair of events during the race, one involving Zona Verde (Ire) (Calyx {GB}) and the third-place runner Mo Fox Givin in the stretch, but opted to let the order of finish stand.

“I would have liked to stay third or fourth and not wide,” said Fresu. “Unfortunately I was caught wide around the first turn and I didn't have any place to go, so I just tried to reduce pace, just to hold her there to save some energy and just give her a breather. At the quarter pole, I asked her because at Del Mar she had an exceptional turn of foot, so I just wanted to see if today at a mile she would have the same. When she switched leads, she just flew home.”

One of 18 stakes winners for sire Honor Code, Medoro is the first foal out of a half-sister to the dam of Perryville S. record-setter and new sire Nashville (Speightstown). Further back in the family is GI Kentucky Derby upsetter Giacomo (Holy Bull) along with MGISW Tiago (Pleasant Tap) and GSW/MGISP Stanwyck (Empire Maker). The winner has a Speightstown yearling half-brother and a weanling half-brother by Honor A.P. while her dam is pregnant to Not This Time. Pegasus Preview Day at Gulfstream Park Saturday

Gulfstream Park's Saturday program will offer four stakes races– three graded–including the GIII Harlan's Holiday S., a prep for the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational, and the GII Fort Lauderdale S., a prep for the GI Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational.

The Harlan's Holiday drew a field of 11, including last out GII Hagyard Fayette S. winner and 5-2 morning-line favorite O'Connor (Chi) (Boboman); last year's GII Remsen S. winner Dubyuhnell (Good Magic), who returned from the shelf with an optional claiming win at Keeneland Oct. 28; and the streaking $1.7-million OBS April graduate and 'TDN Rising Star' Signator (Tapit), who makes his stakes debut for trainer Shug McGaughey following two straight wins at Aqueduct Oct. 21 and Nov. 12.

“In the Keeneland race, he was off the pace, but he was handy the whole way. He was into the bridle and traveled well for Tyler (Gaffalione),” trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. said of O'Connor's win in the Fayette. “If he can travel the same way, it will increase his chances Saturday.”

The Fort Lauderdale has attracted a field of 10, including the Chad Brown-trained duo of 2-1 morning-line favorite Running Bee (English Channel), who resurfaced from a lengthy layoff with a wire-to-wire victory in an optional claimer at Aqueduct Nov. 17; and Stone Age (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), runner-up in the 2022 GI Breeders' Cup Turf. The latter adds blinkers following a fifth-place finish in the GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic S. Oct. 7.

The 11-race card at Gulfstream also includes: the GIII Suwannee River S. and the Rampart S.

Santa Anita, meanwhile, boasts a pair of grassy graded races Saturday, the GII Joe Hernandez S. and the GIII Robert J. Frankel S.

Friday Insights: American Pharoah Filly Unveiled At Santa Anita

TAHINI (American Pharoah) debuts Friday afternoon for Kretz Racing. Initially sold for $200,000 at Keeneland September, the filly went for $475,000 at the OBS March Sale after a 10 flat breeze during the under tack show. The George Papaprodromou trainee is out of SP More Fun Again (Arch), whose own graded stakes winning dam Silver Reunion (Harlan's Holiday) produced GII Lake Placid S. heroine Speaktomeofsummer (Summer Front).

Also making her first start is Ms Bo J (Mitole), who was purchased for $70,000 as a weanling during Keeneland November. The Peter Eurton trainee recorded her own 10 flat during the OBS March Sale before going to Exline-Border Racing for $350,000. Daddysruby Leads Home Cal-Bred Exacta One-Two in the La Brea

In a battle of Cal-bred fillies, it was Jethorse, Wachtel Stable and Gary Barber's Daddysruby (Frac Daddy) who just got the bob over the late-closing Big Pond (Mr. Big) in a thrilling finish to the GI La Brea S. at Santa Anita Tuesday. Though not the quickest into stride from her inside post, Daddysruby rushed up along the rail to take the early lead. She was pressed by favored Howl (Practical Joke) through a quarter in :22.21, but opened a clear lead as the favorite–unbeaten in a pair of lifetime starts coming into the La Brea–faltered after a half in :44.49. Daddysruby was still in front at the top of the lane and looked home free, but Big Pond loomed a threatening presence to her outside and closed with determination under Frankie Dettori to just miss on the line.

“We just wanted to get a good position because we were on the rail,” said winning rider Juan Hernandez. “I watched the other horses break and I knew we didn't need to go right to the lead. We broke quick. She's so game. She gave me a couple of more jumps in the lane. I wasn't so sure when we crossed the wire, but when my number went up, I was so happy.”

Co-owner Gary Barber admitted he wasn't sure his filly had come out on top in the photo finish.

“That was a close one, I didn't know who got it,” Barber said. “It was really tough. It looked like we were going to come second but winning like that, it's thrilling and were very happy.”

Daddysruby won her maiden impressively at first asking over the Tapeta at Golden Gate in January for her breeder, Steven Reger's Jethorse, and trainer Tim McCanna before Adam Wachtel and Barber joined the ownership line and the filly was transferred to trainer Peter Miller's barn. Winner of consecutive state-bred races–over the main track at Santa Anita in March and over the lawn at Del Mar in August–the gray filly was fourth in an age-restricted two-turn allowance on the grass at Del Mar Sept. 3, but atoned with a 5 1/4-length victory against older fillies and mares sprinting on the dirt last time out at Santa Anita Oct. 27.

“She is just all heart, and she was just a warrior today,” said Barber. “There's nothing better than winning a Grade I on opening day. We put a lot of money into this game and these are the moments we want to enjoy and share the victory with all of the partners and friends.”

Pedigree Notes:
Daddysruby is the first graded winner for her Ontario-based sire, Frac Daddy. She is the stallion's fifth black-type winner overall and first outside of Woodbine. Reger, a realtor based in Billings, Montana, campained Daddysruby's dam, Youtheprizeandi. The mare's first foal was stakes-placed Daddysprize (Scat Daddy), who was second in the 2018 Real Good Deal S. in the Jethorse colors. She has a yearling filly by Conquest Farenheit, but her 2023 foal by Smiling Tiger died.
