Frankie Dettori To Ride Argentine Group 1 Winner Blue Stripe In Distaff

Blue Stripe, the half-sister to 2019 Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Blue Prize, is aimed at this year's edition of the Distaff at Del Mar. According to the Daily Racing Form, jockey Frankie Dettori has been booked to ride the Argentinian Group 1 winner Blue Stripe for local trainer Marcelo Polanco.

The 4-year-old daughter of Equal Stripes won four of her six starts in Argentina for trainer Nicolas Martin Ferro. Blue Stripe won her last start on May 1 in the Group 1 Gran Premio Criadores, a “Win and You're In” for the Distaff, and has since been based in California.

Blue Stripe has been working steadily since June 30 at both Santa Anita and Del Mar, building up to work as far as seven furlongs on both Sept. 3 and Oct. 4.

Blue Stripe and Blue Prize are both out of the Not For Sale mare Blues For Sale, a three-time group winner in Argentina.

Trainer Simon Callaghan Suspended 15 Days, Fined $5,000 For Shock Wave Violation

Santa Anita stewards have issued a 15-day suspension and $5,000 fine to trainer Simon Callaghan, reports bloodhorse.com, for violating the California Horse Racing Board's policy for extra corporeal shock wave therapy. Stewards minutes indicate that Callaghan trainee Federal Bureau worked four furlongs on May 22, 2021, even though the horse had received three shock wave treatments on May 5, 12, and 19.

Federal Bureau is an unraced 3-year-old by Medaglia d'Oro, who sold for $1.2 million at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling sale. He was nominated to the Triple Crown this year with Qatar Racing and Stonestreet Stable listed as owners.

Following a spate of equine fatalities at Santa Anita Park in 2019, the CHRB changed its shock wave policy in early 2020. Shock wave is used to increase blood flow and speed healing, but can have analgesic effects. Horses are now not allowed to resume workouts or racing within 30 days of a shock wave treatment; previously, that spacing had been 10 days.

Callaghan's suspension is scheduled to run from Nov. 14 through 28, and the CHRB has denied his application for a stay of suspension. Attorney Darrell Vienna told bloodhorse.com Callaghan plans to appeal.

$76,823 Carried Over To Next Friday’s Stronach 5

The Stronach 5 will have a rare carryover Oct. 22 of $76,823.80 after there were no winning tickets Friday.

Featuring a low 12-percent takeout, the Stronach 5 proved tough to hit Friday when two races from Laurel Park produced longshot winners of $33.80 and $26. The remaining three races from Santa Anita Park and Gulfstream Park had payoffs of $10 or less.

It was Dance Warrior, a 15-1 shot, who opened the Stronach 5 by winning Laurel's eighth race over a firm 1 1/8-mile course under jockey Jevian Toledo. The lightly raced 3-year-old daughter of Pioneerof the Nile returned $33.80

Gulfstream's eighth race at six furlongs on the main track served as the second leg of the Stronach 5. Gangly, a 4-1 shot racing for the first time since being claimed by trainer Jose D'Angelo, was the winner under jockey Samy Camacho and returned $10.

Laurel's ninth race, a maiden event at six furlongs for 2-year-olds, was the third leg of the Stronach 5 and American Playboy, off at 12-1 under jockey Jorge Ruiz, drove past 3-5 favorite Bust'em Kurt for the victory.

The Stronach 5 went west to Santa Anita for the final two legs. The third race at Santa Anita for maiden 3-year-olds and up going six furlongs went to the 5-2 second choice Miss Tokyo for trainer Leonard Powell and jockey Umberto Rispoli.

Santa Anita's fourth race concluded the Stronach 5 with maidens 3-years-old and up going six furlongs on the main track. Humboldt was a late scratch at the gate and Gerlach's (5-2) lost his rider shortly after the start. It was Pick Your Bid (3-1) and jockey Mario Gutierrez who got up in the final strides to win the final leg of the Stronach 5.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.

Into Mischief Colt Survives Race-Long Duel To Graduate

BAROSSA (c, 2, Into Mischief–Bouquet Booth {GSW, $527,279}, by Flower Alley) was sent off the lukewarm 14-5 favorite in a strong-looking two-turn maiden Friday at Santa Anita got just the better of a race-long tussle with Durante (Distorted Humor) to graduate at third asking. The latter, drawn the inside for his first try at a distance of ground, was aggressively ridden and led into the first turn, but was joined immediately to his outside by Barossa and the two went a swift opening quarter in :23 flat. Still moving along at a good clip through a half-mile in :47.48, Durante retained the call as they hit the stretch, met and held the persistent challenge of Barossa deep into the final furlong and gave way grudingly. The winning margin was a half-length. A $775,000 Keeneland September yearling, Barossa was a well-beaten fourth in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden at Del Mar July 25, but attended a good pace in his two-turn debut at Del Mar Aug. 27 and tired fractionally to finish third to Oviatt Class (Bernardini) subsequently third to 'TDN Rising Star' Corniche (Quality Road) and Pappacap (Gun Runner) in the GI Frontrunner S. at this venue Oct. 1.
