Dr. Schivel Guts It Out In Santa Anita Sprint Championship

In a battle of raw speed, Dr. Schivel (Violence) proved to be too much to beat as he outlasted a returning Speed Boat Beach (Bayern) to take the GII Santa Anita Sprint Championship S.

Last seen running a close-up third in the GI Bing Crosby S. at Del Mar over the summer, Dr. Schivel had plenty of back class to call on here: third last year at Meydan in the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen for his only start of the season, second to Aloha West (Hard Spun) in the 2021 Breeders' Cup Sprint, and victorious in that year's GI Bing Crosby. He was also a winner of the GI Del Mar Futurity as a juvenile, making him one of very few runners who can claim Group or Grade I black-type every year he's raced.

Sent to the blocks here carrying 2-1 odds against a well-traveled line up of challengers, Dr. Schivel was quickly sent along after a light bobble at the jump to garner a forward position as Sir Atticus (Gormley) sailed though the early fractions in company of Speed Boat Beach, who was returning from the bench for the first time in almost 10 months. With that trio making all the running passing the three-furlong pole, Dr. Schivel took the inland route as the longshot pacesetter continued fighting off challenges to both sides but Speed Boat Beach looked intent on making a race out of it from the grandstand side. With Sir Atticus tiring by the furlong marker, the top two locked horns for the money and the race's 2021 champion would not be denied despite a valiant effort from the Bob Baffert trainee. Fort Bragg (Tapit) made a belated rally to pick up third.

“The whole plan was to take the same path we did in 2021 and it worked really well that year. It was within an inch of working terrific, but you know I think these sprinters want to run a little fresh and at the same time I like the four weeks out from the Breeders' Cup. Four or five weeks. He got a good race under his belt,” said winning trainer Mark Glatt.

He added: “The ownership group is wonderful to train for they always allow me to do what is good for the horse, he's had his vacations and we've had to be patient. In some cases at times we had to be double patient and that's why he is around still because he wasn't pushed once he gave us the warning light. Hopefully he has one more good one in him and then he gets to go on to his second career.”

When asked if Dr. Schivel will be seen again at the Breeders' Cup, Tim Cohen was very clear: “But of course!”

Pedigree Notes:

The most accomplished of his family, Dr. Schivel hails from a racing one as seven of his siblings have all made it to the races, more than half being winners themselves. Their dam is a winning half-sister to millionaire GISW Ultra Blend (Richly Blended); MSP Swing Thoughts (U S Ranger); and to the dam of MSW Lakerball (Lakerville). The most recent sibling to the races 2-year-old Lil Anthony (Anthony's Cross) is unplaced thus far, and Lil Nugget did produced a 2023 full-sister to Dr. Schivel. She went to Volatile for 2024.

APBs: Forbidden Kingdom Gearing Up for Santa Anita Sprint Championship

MyRacehorse and Spendthrift Farm's Forbidden Kingdom (American Pharoah), a powerful wire-to-wire winner of the GII San Vicente S. Jan. 29 and GII San Felipe S. Mar. 5, could return to action against older horses in the GII Santa Anita Sprint Championship S. Oct. 1.

Knocked off the Triple Crown trail after finishing last of six as the favorite after setting a fast pace in the GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby Apr. 9, the chestnut has posted three breezes since returning to the worktab in August, most recently firing a four-furlong bullet in :46 (1/65) at Hall of Famer Richard Mandella's Del Mar base Aug. 26.

“He just had a handful of setbacks–a succession of bad luck, bad timing type of things,” Spendthrift's General Manager Ned Toffey said.

“The most recent was a little bout with colitis and it just took a little bit for him to bounce back. Richard is such a great caretaker and he's given him plenty of time and let him get back to the horse that we know he is. He's starting to remind us of what we saw earlier in the year. We know he's fast. We know he's talented. It's just been a frustrating year. We're always gonna do what's right for the horse and give them the time that they need. Hopefully, he's gonna reward us for it.”

Bred in Kentucky by Gabriel Duignan's Springhouse Farm, Forbidden Kingdom brought $300,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase. He is one of 16 graded winners worldwide for Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. Duignan purchased Forbidden Kingdom's dam Just Louise (Five Star Day), winner of the 2010 GIII Debutante S. and a half-sister to MGSW Sara Louise (Malibu Moon), for $150,000 at the 2013 FTKNOV sale.

Forbidden Kingdom, a debut winner at two at Del Mar, was also second in last term's GIII Bob Hope S. and third in the grassy Speakeasy S.

“When we bought him at the sale, he very much had a look of an American dirt speed horse,” Toffey said.

“And not that he can't stretch out. We still feel like the jury is out on that subject. They need to do it on the track and build that resume before getting admitted to the stud barn, but he certainly is the kind of horse that I think breeders would really respond well to. We want to try to enjoy some more success with him first.”

CHRB Settlement: John Sadler Fined $5,000 Over 2020 Bisphosphonate Positive

Trainer John Sadler has been fined $5,000 by the California Horse Racing Board, according to a ruling published on Friday, relating to his trainee Flagstaff testing positive for clodronic acid, a bisphosphonate sold under the brand name Osphos, in a post-race sample after finishing second in the Grade 2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes on Sept. 27, 2020, at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif.

Bisphosphonates are a class of drug approved by the FDA in 2014 and prescribed to prevent bone loss in people and to treat navicular syndrome in horses, a common cause of forelimb lameness. The drug is not approved for horses less than four years old.

Equine surgeon Dr. Larry Bramlage of Rood & Riddle warned about the use of bisphosphonates Osphos and Tildren in young horses during a client education seminar in 2018, saying the drug can have unintended, detrimental side effects. Many racing states moved to ban the drugs.

The CHRB banned bisphosphonates effective July 1, 2020, saying that any horse administered the drug in the previous six months – effectively a cutoff date of Jan. 1, 2020 – was prohibited from stabling on CHRB regulated grounds.

When the positive test was first made public in May, Sadler's attorney Darrell Vienna said Flagstaff was legally treated with Osphos on an unspecified date “late in 2019,” when Flagstaff was 5 years old. Vienna cited the extended half life of Osphos as an explanation for the positive test, saying it can linger in a horse's system for many months or even longer than a year.

Flagstaff was ordered unplaced in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship by a ruling released on June 19, 2021.

Friday's ruling specifies that Sadler entered into a settlement agreement with the CHRB, and that the fine is for violation of rule #1867.1(b), which states: “No licensee shall bring into a CHRB enclosure a horse known to have been administered a bisphosphonate within the previous six months.”

At the time the positive was announced, clodronic acid was not included on the CHRB's current list of prohibited substances, so under the regulatory body's rules it automatically falls under the most severe drug category, Class 1. Today, current CHRB regulations list bisphosphonates as Drug Class C, Penalty Category A.

Penalty Category A requires a one-year suspension, absent mitigating circumstances, along with a minimum fine of $10,000, again absent mitigating circumstances. Owners face loss of purse and potential placement of a horse on the vet's list for up to 90 days.

Dr. Schivel Overcomes Adversity and Runs Them Off Their Feet

Broken right rein, no problem for Flavien Prat.

Dr. Schivel (Violence), already guaranteed a spot in the starting for the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint via a win in the GI Bing Crosby S. July 31, added a second straight 'Win and You're In' tally over his elders in Saturday's GII Santa Anita Sprint Championship S.

Drawn on the fence while facing five rivals, last term's GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity S. winner showed much more speed than usual, forcing the issue from an inside–and tight second–in the early stages and had to tap on the brakes slightly at the five-eighths marker when Prat's right rein came undone from the strap.

Undeterred, the 9-5 favorite took charge through an opening quarter in :21.87, began to edge away approaching the quarter pole, and, with Prat, essentially riding with one rein and giving his charge right- and left-handed reminders, had five lengths in the stretch before being geared down late in an ultra-impressive performance.

“I had just the left rein after we left the chute at around the five and half mark,” said Prat. “It was kind of scary. This has never happened to me before. The horse was very proficient. Everything was normal otherwise. I let the other jock [Abel Cedillo, aboard Vertical Threat] know that I only had one rein and to stay out of the way. Everything worked out great and we got home safely.”

A maiden winner at third asking for former trainer Luis Mendez and for his co-breeders William A. Branch and Arnold R. Hill,

Red Baron's Barn, Rancho Temescal and William Dean Reeves joined the ownership group ahead of his score in Del Mar Futurity and was given the balance of the year off.

Programmed for a late-season sophomore campaign under the tutelage of Mark Glatt, he returned to action with a tough neck victory in a six-furlong Santa Anita allowance June 18 prior to his Bing Crosby score.

Pedigree Notes:

With his Futurity victory late last summer, Dr. Schivel became the third of three Grade I winners in 2020 for his sire, joining 'TDN Rising Star' No Parole and Volatile. One of 32 stakes winners (12 graded) for Violence, he is the only black-type winner from a daughter of former Jeff Bonde trainee Mining for Money (Mining), a half-brother to MGSW Intrusion (Top Command), who was a maiden winner and stakes placed in two trips to the post. A half-sister to GI Clement L. Hirsch S. winner Ultra Blend (Richly Blended), Lil Nugget is the dam of the 2-year-old colt Barsini Red (Midshipman), did not produce a foal in 2020 or this year and was most recently bred to Anthony's Cross.
