Santa Anita ‘Good Neighbor’ Policy Provides Spacious Grounds For Community Organizations

In what has been an incredibly challenging year for all segments of society, Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., has been quick to assist a number of schools, local service organizations and others in need of open space for a wide variety of needs, including fund raising, small animal veterinary care, driver training, fire evacuation, E-Waste collection and much more.

One recent example of Santa Anita's community service came this past September, when the track assisted the American Red Cross and the city of Arcadia by serving as an evacuation site for the  Bobcat Fire which was raging in the nearby San Gabriel Mountains.

“Being a good neighbor is something we take great pride in,” said Pete Siberell, Santa Anita's longtime Director of Community Services and Special Projects.  “With the on-going Covid crisis, there has been an increased need for open space and we're very fortunate to be in a position to assist a number of local entities, including schools, Arcadia Fire, Methodist Hospital, the Girl Scouts of America, small animal veterinary needs and many more.

“Horse racing is obviously our core business and although we remain open for training and look forward to our traditional Winter/Spring Meet opener on Dec. 26, we are still not allowed to admit the general public, so this has opened up our parking lots and Grandstand areas throughout the year for a variety of projects and community oriented events.”

One very significant recent development has been the on-site establishment of not-for-profit Free Animal Doctor, which began operating a small animal veterinary clinic in Santa Anita's parking lot 7 this past September.

“Free Animal Doctor (FAD) has been a great addition for us,” said Siberell.  “Our backside community is populated by hundreds of animal lovers and FAD recently performed 30 low cost spay and neuter procedures, primarily for those folks that work in the Stable Area.  FAD is going to be partnering soon with the Pasadena Humane Society, so their positive impact on the community at large is going to become even greater.”

In terms of fund raising activities, in the month of November alone, Santa Anita has hosted a Drive-in Movie Night for the Sierra Madre-based Gooden School (K-8), a Family Gratitude Drive Through Event for Highland Oaks (middle school) PTSA/Arcadia, a Food Distribution Event for Girl Scouts of America/Arcadia, a Crystal Ball Fundraiser Drive-Through for the (Arcadia) Methodist Hospital Foundation and a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club of the Foothills, sponsored by the Fellowship Monrovia Church.

Santa Anita has always served as a year-round Driver Training facility for the Arcadia Fire Department and has traditionally provided acreage for Rose Parade Band training for out-of-town universities.  This past December, Pasadena City College and the Alhambra Unified School District also came to Santa Anita to help train their respective bands in advance of Pasadena's annual New Year's Day extravaganza.

This past February, Santa Anita facilitated Driver Training for the Sierra Madre Fire Department and did the same for Monrovia Fire July.

Additionally, Santa Anita assisted the LA County Sanitation Department this past August as they hosted an E-Waste collection event in the track's Infield parking lot.

Santa Anita Announces Sunshine Bonus To Draw Out-Of-State Horses To Winter Meet

With its traditional Winter/Spring Meeting set to begin Saturday, Dec. 26, Santa Anita Park has announced a lucrative Sunshine Bonus, which is intended to attract out-of-state horses throughout the meet, which concludes on June 20.

“Along with the 10 percent raise in our average daily purse distribution which now totals  $533,000, we're hopeful this new Sunshine Bonus program will help to attract horses that have not run in California over the past 12 months,” said Chris Merz, Santa Anita's Director of Racing. “With a guaranteed bonus of $3,000 to be paid to the owners of any eligible horse making their first start here, excluding stakes races and first-time starters, this is a very significant enticement to train and race at what we believe is a magnificent year-round facility.”

In addition to the initial $3,000 starter's bonus, Merz pointed out that sizable bonuses will be paid to those same horses predicated upon where they finish in their Santa Anita debuts.

“Excluding stakes and first-time starters, the Sunshine Bonus will also offer a 35 percent bonus to the owners of those horses finishing first through fifth in their first starts here. So for instance, if a horse ships in and wins a $61,000 maiden special weight race, the owner will not only receive the standard winner's share of $36,600, he'll get the first time Santa Anita starter bonus of $3,000 as well as the 35 percent bonus of $12,810.

“This adds up to total money-won of $52,410 in a $61,000 race.  The numbers speak for themselves and we're hoping horsemen nationwide will take this into account when they consider sending horses here this winter and spring.”

Santa Anita Releases Winter-Spring Stakes Schedule; Overnight Purses Increased 10%

Santa Anita Park will raise the daily overnight purse distribution 10% for the 2020-21 season which begins on Saturday, Dec. 26.  The increase will bring the average daily purse money available to horsemen to over $533,000, totaling more than $43-million for the season which runs through June 20, 2021.

Santa Anita's 84th season will be highlighted by a diverse stakes schedule offering over $15-million. The prestigious Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, which has produced 19 winners of the Kentucky Derby, including recent Breeders' Cup Classic hero Authentic, will be run on Saturday, April 3, 2021.

“Building Santa Anita's aggressive overnight purse schedule is a reflection of the confidence that we have in California racing even in the midst of a pandemic,” said Craig Fravel, CEO of 1/ST Racing.  “Nothing has been easy about this past year, so we are thankful to the horsemen who have continued to support our program on a daily basis.  We've missed the fans who have been absent from our track since March 12th, but we are grateful to be able to bring them the consistent top-quality racing that has been synonymous with Santa Anita since 1934.”

The racing program at Santa Anita has continued to evolve over the decades, and another innovation will be on display this winter.  The first major remodel of the Santa Anita turf course since the 1950s, a new turf chute will allow races up to 6 1/2 furlongs to be contested on the flat oval.  Installed and covered with sod in September, the course will be ready for use on Opening Day and greatly increases the turf distance options for horsemen.

Purses at Santa Anita, like all California racetracks, are derived from a percentage of the handle wagered on the track's races, as opposed to other jurisdictions where purses are supplemented with casino revenue and other forms of wagering.

Santa Anita Wraps Autumn Meet With Zero Racing Or Training Fatalities

Santa Anita Park concluded the Autumn meet as the safest racetrack in the nation, without a single racing or training fatality since the horses returned from Del Mar on Sept. 5. During that time period, which includes the 16-day Autumn racing meet which was delayed because of the Bobcat Fire in the neighboring San Gabriel Mountains, 1,106 horses raced over the dirt track and turf course. Additionally, horses recorded over 51,200 training sessions, including 3,771 timed workouts over the main track and 487 over the training track.

The main dirt track has not had a racing fatality in 2020, including the 2019-20 Winter/Spring meet which began in December.

In 2020 there have been five racing fatalities from 5,069 starts, or 0.98 fatalities per 1,000 starters, well below the national average.

In addition to hosting some of the most prestigious races in the nation, Santa Anita is home to the largest training facilities in the country, operating nearly year-round with over 400,000 annual training sessions.

“These results are the efforts of the racing community to put the safety of the horse first at every turn, including additional veterinary regulations and observations, training approvals and analysis of entries,” said Aidan Butler, Chief Operating Officer of 1/ST Racing. “Last year, we set a course to reform the sport of horse racing for the next generation. This year, we are seeing the results of the hard work everyone has put into this effort.

“We especially appreciate the dedication of the owners, trainers, veterinarians and hardworking men and women who care for the horses, of the jockeys who have adapted their riding styles, the California Horse Racing Board which regulates the sport, and veteran trackman Dennis Moore and the entire Santa Anita track crew, who tirelessly work the surface day and night with safety top of mind.

We acknowledged last year that this modernization would likely lead to a short-term impact on Santa Anita's field size, but as these reforms become the national standards, California is ahead of the implementation curve which strengthens the sport in our state. We sincerely thank the bettors who have continued to support our racing product during this transition.

“On behalf of everyone at Santa Anita, we'd also like to let our fans know how much we've missed their passionate voices cheering these horses at The Great Race Place and we look forward to welcoming everyone back just as soon as we are able to do so.”

Live racing will return to the Arcadia oval at Santa Anita Park as tradition dictates on Dec. 26.
