Friday’s Card At Santa Anita Features $555,554 Jackpot Pick Six Carryover

There were no perfect tickets in Santa Anita's popular 20 cent Single Ticket Rainbow Pick Six Jackpot on Monday, resulting in a sizeable Jackpot carryover of $555,554 into an eight-race program on Friday. First post time is at 12:30 p.m.

With a carryover from Sunday of $481,864, there was $321,913 in new money wagered Monday, resulting in a total Rainbow Six Jackpot pool of $803,777.

Although there was no Single Ticket winner, there were 48 consolation tickets with six winners, each worth $3,602.05.

Friday's Rainbow Six will be comprised of races three through eight. Approximate post time for Friday's third race is at 1:30 p.m. PT.

Santa Anita Launches ‘The Tin Man Turf Starter Distance Series’ This Saturday

Santa Anita's inaugural “The Tin Man Turf Starter Distance Series” will debut this Saturday, as older horses will be provided an opportunity to run in a series of four races, beginning at a mile and one eighth on up to a mile and three quarters on grass. In addition to the opportunity to earn substantial purse money, horses will also be competing to earn a free berth in a pair of marathon turf stakes, either the Grade 2 Charles Whittingham Stakes May 29, or the Grade 3 San Juan Capistrano Stakes on June 20.

The series is named in honor of Ralph and Aury Todd's homebred son of Affirmed, The Tin Man, who was foaled in 1998 and raced through age nine in 2007. Trained by Hall of Famer Richard Mandella, The Tin Man was a multiple graded stakes winner who was a two time Grade 1 winner at age nine. Retired following his 9-year-old campaign, The Tin Man banked more than $3.6 million.

Leg One of The Tin Man series on Saturday will be contested at a mile and one eighth on turf. Leg Two, on Feb. 20, will be run at a mile and one quarter, Leg Three, on March 20 will be run at a mile and one half and the fourth leg will be contested at a mile and three quarters down Santa Anita's Camino Real Hillside Turf Course on April 17.

The Tin Man Starter Distance Series will be open to older horses which have started for a claiming tag of $40,000 or less from 2019 to the present.

“Our hope is that this distance series will serve as a throwback to some of the legendary horses that have competed here at Santa Anita and that these races are going to provide good betting opportunities,” said Santa Anita's Director of Racing and Racing Secretary Chris Merz. “I think our fans and horsemen are going to be excited to see these races run over the downhill Camino Real Course, which has such a rich history.”

Entries for this Saturday at Santa Anita will be taken Wednesday morning. Although there is still no public admittance, fans can view all Santa Anita races free of charge at santaanita.com/live and they can watch and wager via several ADW platforms, including 1st.com/Bet.

Late-Developing Idol, Runner-Up In San Antonio, Has Connections Thinking Big ‘Cap

Richard Baltas, an active participant at Santa Anita Park's entry box, has San Antonio runner-up Idol pointed to the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes on Jan. 30, a major steppingstone to the G1 Santa Anita Handicap on March 6.

Owned by Calvin Nguyen, the son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin had won two overnight races at Churchill Downs by daylight margins as a 3-year-old before tackling older in the San Antonio on Dec. 26.

Out of stakes-winning A.P. Indy mare Marion Ravenwood, Idol commanded a final bid of $375,000 at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The late-developing colt did not debut until Sept. 5 of his sophomore season, then broke his maiden and won an allowance, both at Churchill Downs, by a combined 8 1/4 lengths. Idol's second-place finish in the San Antonio came in just his fourth career start.

Through 12 racing days, Baltas has run 42 horses to rank third behind perennial category leader Doug O'Neill (55) and Peter Miller (44).

Meanwhile, Venetian Harbor is “almost ready to come in” from Kentucky after a three-month freshening following her race in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Keeneland on Nov. 6, in which she finished far back after attending the pace early in the seven-furlong event.

“We gave her 90 days off at the farm and she's coming back into training,” Baltas said of the daughter of Munnings, winner of two Grade 2 stakes last year, the Las Virgenes at Santa Anita and the Raven Run at Keeneland.

No Winners In Friday’s Stronach 5, $97,891 Carryover To Jan. 22

The Stronach 5 will have a carryover of $97,891.79 Jan. 22 after there were no winning tickets in Friday's popular wager.

The Stronach 5, with an industry-low 12-percent takeout and featuring races from Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields, started with a bang Friday when Step by Step won the opening leg and the eighth race at Laurel and returned $54.

That longshot was followed up by Katniss Kas ($17.20) winning Gulfstream's eighth race and the second leg of the Stronach 5 and Spanish d'Oro ($20.20) winning Laurel's ninth race and third leg of the sequence.

The Stronach 5 moved to California for the last two legs. Bang for Your Bucks ($23.60) won Santa Anita's third race before Colavito ($9.20) took the final leg and third race from Golden Gate.

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.
