Irish-Bred Going Global Headlines Saturday’s Honeymoon At Santa Anita

Perfect in three local stakes assignments, trainer Phil D'Amato's streaking Irish-bred Going Global bids for her fourth consecutive turf stakes victory as she heads a field of seven sophomore fillies going a mile and one eighth on grass in Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 Honeymoon Stakes at Santa Anita.

Going Global's primary opposition should come from Simon Callaghan's recent Grade 3 winner Madone and Richard Mandella's Golden, who was a solid second to Madone here in the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes on May 1.

Dismissed at 8-1 in her U.S. debut, the Grade 3 Sweet Life Stakes at six furlongs on Feb. 14, Going Global surged late to win by a half length, and then took the one mile China Doll Stakes by three quarters of a length as the even money favorite on March 6.

Off at 3-5 in the Grade 3 Providencia Stakes and at a mile and one eighth, Going Global was attentive to the pace and prevailed in a hotly contested stretch battle to win by a neck. A winner of her final start in her native Ireland, a seven furlong race versus males over a synthetic surface Nov. 11, Going Global has now won four straight races.

With Flavien Prat engaged to ride her for the fourth consecutive time on Saturday, Going Global, who is owned by CYBT, Michael Dubb, Saul Gervitz, Michael Nentwig and Ray Pagano, will be a short price to improve upon an overall mark of 7-4-0-0 and earnings of $188,792.

Ridden for the first time by Juan Hernandez, Madone surged late to take the one mile turf Senorita by one length at 5-2 and will hope to outrun the top selection as she stretches out a furlong off of five consecutive races at one mile on turf. With the Senorita being her first graded win, Madone, a 3-year-old filly by the Medaglia d'Oro stallion Vancouver, out of the Cherokee Run mare Indian Love Call, has three stakes wins and four victories from five overall starts.

Owned by Kaleem Shah, Madone, who was purchased for $125,000 out of a Florida 2-year-old in training sale a year ago March, has earnings of $211,300.

Next to last early in a field of 10, LNJ Foxwoods' homebred Golden flew the final eighth of mile to finish second, beaten one length by Madone at odds of 29-1 in the Grade 3 Senorita on May 1.

A chestnut filly by Tapit out of the Caerleon mare Gold Round, Golden, who was no match when fifth to Going Global in the ungraded China Doll Stakes two starts back on March 6, is 4-1-0-1 with earnings of $45,940.

Juan Hernandez Voted Jockey Of The Week With Seven Victories

With a determined stretch run aboard Neige Blanche (FR), Juan J. Hernandez won the Grade 3 Santa Barbara Stakes to earn Jockey of the Week for May 3 through May 9. The award, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, is for jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 active riders in the United States as well as retired and permanently disabled jockeys.

Given a leg up by trainer Leonard Powell, Hernandez rode Neige Blanche (FR) for just the second time in the Santa Barbara Stakes after a fourth place finish in the Grade 3 Santa Ana Stakes in March. In a field of seven fillies and mares three-years-old and up, Neige Blanche (FR), which translates to white snow in English, managed to just get up at the wire over Rideforacause in a thrilling renewal of the 1-1/2 mile marathon on the Santa Anita downhill turf course. The final time was 2:28.01.

“It was really close, it could probably go both ways, 50-50, inside or outside and thanks to my filly, we got it,” said Hernandez who chalked up his third win of the day and his seventh stakes win. “It was better, because last time I think we were a little too close to the pace and today, I was a little bit more (relaxed). Two horses in front of me and she relaxed pretty well. Around the quarter pole, when I asked her to go, she responded really well.”

Hernandez, 28 years old, was born in Perote, Veracruz, Mexico where he started his riding career also riding in Puerto Rico. He came to northern California in 2010 and established himself at Golden Gate Fields winning numerous riding titles. He shifted his tack permanently to southern California last summer during the Los Alamitos Thoroughbred meeting. He is currently in second place behind Flavien Prat at the Winter/Spring Santa Anita meeting.

Hernandez's weekly stats were 15-7-1-1 with a 46.6 win percentage and 60 percent in-the-money. His total purse earnings for the week were $256,680.

For Jockey of the Week, Hernandez out polled David Cabrera who was the leading rider by number of wins, Santiago Gonzalez who was second in number of wins, Joel Rosario who was the leading jockey by purses won and John Velazquez who won the Grade 1 Man o' War.

Santa Anita, Del Mar Join Forces To Expand ‘Ship & Win’ Program

Santa Anita Park and the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club have joined forces to expand upon Del Mar's popular “Ship & Win” program, as out-of-state horses who make their first California-based starts in May and June at Santa Anita will still be eligible for the lucrative purse incentives at Del Mar, beginning with their Summer Meet opener on July 16.

Effective May 1, out-of-state horses can now start up to twice at Santa Anita through closing day of the current 2021 Winter/Spring Meet on June 20 and still be eligible for Del Mar's Ship & Win program bonuses.

“This is a great enticement to out-of-state owners and horsemen to bring their horses here in advance of Del Mar,” said Santa Anita Director of Racing and Racing Secretary Chris Merz. “People around the country know Santa Anita and Del Mar provide world class training and racing opportunities. We've very happy the folks at Del Mar and with the Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) recognize the importance of this comprehensive approach to attracting new horses.”

Merz also added that any new horses participating in the Del Mar Ship & Win program will also be eligible for the Santa Anita Sunshine Bonus, which will again be offered at the track's upcoming Autumn Meet, which opens Oct. 1.

Second To Swiss Skydiver Last Out, As Time Goes By Headlines Five-Horse Field In Santa Margarita

Fresh off of a second place finish to the mighty Swiss Skydiver, As Time Goes By looms the horse to beat going a mile and one eighth in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Santa Margarita Stakes at Santa Anita. First run in 1935, the prestigious Santa Margarita, which was not offered last year due to a cessation of racing caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, has attracted a field of five older fillies and mares for what will be its 83rd running.

Trained by Bob Baffert, As Time Goes By was beaten 2 ¾ lengths by Swiss Skydiver, last year's Eclipse Champion Dirt Female, in the Grade 1 Beholder Mile in a very impressive effort. A nine-length first condition allowance winner going one mile two starts back on Jan. 17, As Time Goes By finished strongly in the Beholder Mile at odds of 9-5 and should be ready for her first test at a mile and one eighth.

Owned by Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier and Derrick Smith, As Time Goes By, a 4-year-old daughter of 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah out of the multiple Grade 1 stakes winning Dehere mare Take Charge Lady, is 5-2-2-1 and is seeking her first stakes victory.

A two-time graded stakes winner, Simon Callaghan's Harvest Moon pressed the early pace and tired late to finish fourth, beaten seven lengths by Swiss Skydiver in the Beholder Mile and will be ridden for the seventh consecutive time by leading man Flavien Prat.

A close fourth two starts back to super mare Monomoy Girl in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Distaff Nov. 7 at Keeneland, Harvest Moon, a 4-year-old filly by Uncle Mo out of the Shamardal mare Qaraaba, was bred by Alice Bamford and is owned by Bamford and Michael Tabor. With four wins from seven starts, Harvest Moon will try a mile and one eighth for the second time.
