Relative Of Eminent Debuts At Sandown

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Thursday's Observations features a relative of Group 2 winner Eminent (Ire) (Frankel {GB}).

4.38 Deauville, Debutantes, €27,000, 2yo, c/g, 6fT
WILLIAM TELL (FR) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) at €420,000 was the joint-second highest-priced lot at last year's Arqana Deauville October Yearling Sale and debuts days after that auction's topper Denmark (GB) (Camelot {GB}) made an impressive winning racecourse bow. Trained by Andre Fabre for Godolphin, the January-foaled Ecurie Des Monceaux-bred black colt is out of a half-sister to the triple Group 1-winning sire Charm Spirit (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

6.36 Sandown, Mdn, £9,900, 2yo, 8fT
HIGH HONOUR (GB) (Frankel {GB}) debuts in the maiden won in recent years by the sire's Westover (GB) and also by Too Darn Hot (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and made a splash at the Book 1 when selling for 900,000gns, being out of a half-sister to Frankel's G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano and G3 Craven S.-winning sire Eminent (Ire). Starting for Godolphin and Charlie Appleby, who have won this twice in the past five years and whose first-string Desert Order (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) will be a warm order having been third in a strong Newmarket July Festival maiden, the February-foaled bay is also up against another experienced rival who carries gravitas in Juddmonte's Arrest (GB) (Frankel {GB}). One of three to top the 2020 Goffs November Foal Sale, the John and Thady Gosden-trained colt will give an early indication as to the merit of the operation's TDN Rising Star Nostrum (GB) (Kingman {GB}) who beat him into third over seven here last month.

Dance In The Grass A Stakes First For Cracksman

Jaber Abdullah's Dance In The Grass (GB) (Cracksman {GB}–Dance The Dream {GB}, by Sir Percy {GB}) became the fifth winner for her freshman sire (by Frankel {GB}) when snagging her June 10 debut, going seven furlongs at Sandown in her only prior start, and registered a first stakes win for the Dalham Hall Stud resident in Thursday's Listed European Bloodstock News EBF Star S. over the same course and distance. The eventual winner was squeezed for room during the initial exchanges and raced off the pace towards the rear through the early fractions. Making headway out wide in the straight, she was shaken up to go second soon after passing the quarter-mile marker and kept on in determined fashion to deny Fairy Cross (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) by 3/4-of-a-length nearing the line, with the duo pulling six lengths clear of the remainder.

“It was Plan Z as she missed the break and was a lot further back than intended, but I was impressed as she had to make a lot of ground up,” said Charlie Johnston. “Because she made such a big effort I thought she was going to pay for that in the last 150 yards, but she managed to find even more so it was impressive. She's by Cracksman so you wouldn't expect her to be doing this already and, even though it's a small sample size, the Cracksmans are making an impression. We've got three, two have won and the other will be out soon. She's in the [G2] Debutante and [G1] Moyglare in Ireland and I suspect her next run will either be the Moyglare or the [G2] May Hill at Doncaster. Those look the two best options for her. They are in September which is a far way away, but if anything you'd think she would improve for going [up to] a mile.”

Dance In The Grass, half-sister to a yearling colt by Ulysses (Ire) and a weanling colt by Too Darn Hot (GB), is the first of three foals produced by Listed Daisy Warwick S. third Dance The Dream (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}), herself a half-sister to G3 Dee S. placegetter Rasmy (GB) (Red Ransom) out of stakes-winning G1 Vodafone Oaks third Shadow Dancing (GB) (Unfuwain). Shadow Dancing is a daughter of Listed Cheshire Oaks victrix and G2 Park Hill S. runner-up Salchow (GB) (Niniski), herself a half-sister to G3 Chester Vase-winning sire Gulland (GB) (Unfuwain).

Kingman Colt A New Rising Star At Sandown

Juddmonte's hitherto unraced 2-year-old colt Nostrum (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Mirror Lake (GB) (MSW & GSP-Eng, $113,061), by Dubai Destination) was let go at odds of 13-2 for Thursday's Martin Densham Memorial EBF Maiden S. at Sandown and came home with a 'TDN Rising Star' after producing a taking display in a contest won last year by subsequent G2 Queen's Vase second Zechariah (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}). The homebred bay was bustled along from the gates to occupy a forward pitch in second after the initial strides of the seven-furlong test. Making eyecatching headway from the three-furlong pole, he powered to the front passing the quarter-mile marker and was pushed out inside the final furlong to easily defeat Golden Speech (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) by an impressive three lengths.

“He's a big horse and had been doing well at home,” said Ryan Moore. “I thought he might be a little raw and if he started slowly he might not get organised at all, but I was able to get him into a good position and get a lead. He was left in front a long way out, which I didn't want to be, and every time I asked him he kept lengthening. There's plenty of improvement in him and I'd say he's more of a 3-year-old than a 2-year-old. He'll have no problem going a mile and may get a little further. He's a nice colt.”

Nostrum is the seventh foal and scorer produced by the dual stakes-winning G3 Prestige S. runner-up Mirror Lake (GB) (Dubai Destination), herself a half-sister to the dam of Listed Lanwades Stud S. victrix Hateya (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}). The March-foaled homebred bay is a half-brother to dual Group-winning G1 C F Orr S. runner-up Imaging (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and Listed Heatherlie S. victor Titus (GB) (Dansili {GB}). Descendants of his third dam Roupala (Vaguely Noble {Ire}) include this term's G1 Saudi Cup hero Emblem Road (Quality Road), multiple Grade I-winning distaffer Ventura (Chester House) and dual elite-level winners Queen Supreme (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and Harlem (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}).
