Jack Wolf Joins the TDN Writers’ Room Podcast

As the managing partner of Starlight Racing, Jack Wolf is a part of a team that can always be counted on to have several prospects for the GI Kentucky Derby. That's the case again this year as the trio of Starlight, SF Racing and Madaket Stables will have horses in Saturday's GII San Felipe S., the GIII Gotham S. and the John Battaglia Memorial. To discuss those runners and Starlight's philosophies when it comes to trying to acquire Derby candidates Wolf was the Green Group Guest of the Week on this week's TDN Writers' Room podcast presented by Keeneland.

As was the case last year, the Starlight horses have been transferred to trainer Tim Yakteen, who is taking over for Bob Baffert. Baffert, due to a ban imposed by Churchill Downs, is not eligible to run horses in this year's Derby.

“We sort of went down this road last year and it seems to be working,” Wolf said. “The transfer seems to be working a lot more smoothly than last year. Last year, Bob was also serving a suspension (from the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission). We're fortunate to have Bob working with us and trying to continue on to have these particular horses be eligible for the Derby points. Bob, (SF Racing Managing Partner) Tom Ryan and Tim have done a great job working together to try pull this off up to this point.”

Among the four Starlight horses that will be running in Derby preps this weekend, Wolf wasn't shy about listing who he believes is the best. It's San Felipe starter National Treasure (Quality Road), who is coming off a third-place finish in the GIII Sham S.

“I got on him as a Derby horse a couple of months before the end of the year,” Wolf said. “I just like how things are setting up for him, hopefully, for the next three races. I just really like the horse. He's not peaking too soon. Bob Baffert always says you get Derby Fever in January and February. But you don't know what you have until April comes around. So even though this horse may have a little case of second-itis, I think from a pedigree standpoint and the way he's been set up for the San Felipe he's our best hope.  That's who I have my money on.”

Starlight, SF Racing and Madaket were among the first major owners to pool their resources at the sales, which mas become a growing trend in the sport. That means more competition for the trio when it comes to acquiring expensive horses, but Wolf said he believes his team can outperform their rivals.

“We've got better bloodstock agents and better operation than the other ones,” he said. “But, yes, they're buying a lot of stock.  Mike (Repole) and Vinnie (Viola) put a little bit more money into it than we do. Maybe we put a little bit more money into it than the group Brad Cox has assembled. I like those guys. It's fun to compete with them and have at it.”

Elsewhere on the podcast, which is also sponsored by Coolmore, Lane's End, the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders AssociationXBTV, and West Point Thoroughbreds, Randy Moss, Zoe Cadman and Bill Finley took a look back at the win by Confidence Game (Candy Ride {Arg}) in the GII Rebel S. and trainer Keith Desormeaux's knack for developing modestly priced sales horses into stars and a looked ahead to this week's major races, including the GII Fountain of Youth S., the GII San Felipe S. and the GI Santa Anita H. In other news, the team discussed the reinstatement of controversial trainer Rick Dutrow and a TDN column by Sid Fernando that reasons that SGF-1000, the drug Jason Servis has admitted to using on his horses, is not a performance-enhancing drug.

American Pharoah Colt Takes No Prisoners in San Felipe

MyRacehorse and Spendthrift Farm's Forbidden Kingdom (American Pharoah) ran off from his rivals at the start and never looked back, dominating Santa Anita's GII San Felipe S. Saturday while picking up 50 GI Kentucky Derby points. Last seen besting GISW and next-out Saudi Derby scorer Pinehurst (Twirling Candy) in the seven-furlong GII San Vicente S. here Jan. 29, the even-money faorite out-footed two foes into the first turn and zipped along through splits of :22.66 and :45.90 as Armagnac (Quality Road) gave chase a few lengths behind and very far in front of the rest of them. Forbidden Kingdom's advantage was approaching double digits rounding the home bend, and while for a stride or two there was at least a question of whether Doppelganger (Into Mischief) could possibly reel in his rival, Forbidden Kingdom rode the leader out with just hands and heels to cruise under the line 5 3/4 lengths to the good.

“I was anxious to see this race and see if he would get two turns. He looked even better,” Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella said. “I was a little nervous when I saw the :45 on the board for the first half. He just did what he likes to do. The next step is the [GI Runhappy] Santa Anita Derby next month.”

Hernandez said, “It worked out pretty well. Mr. Mandella had the horse ready. He's really fast. A couple of jumps after we broke, he was in front already. I let him run because if you fight with him he tries to go faster… I let him have fun. I turned him loose and he never stopped, he kept going the whole race. He proved how good he is today.”

A debut winner in fairly fast time at Del Mar last August, Forbidden Kingdom tried a turf dash when third in the local Speakeasy S. in October before returning to the main track to complete the exacta behind highly regarded Messier (Empire Maker) in Del Mar's GIII Bob Hope S. Nov. 14. He earned a strong 92 Beyer Speed Figure when taking the San Vicente off the bench.

“It's unbelievable,” said MyRacehorse founder and CEO Michael Behrens. “We were at the Derby and Breeders' Cup with Authentic [in 2020] and that was amazing. But to have this one and pick this horse as a baby. To go through the whole journey.  To watch Mandella see him through his maturation and control his brilliant speed…And to do this today with all of these people, it's a touchdown.”

Forbidden Kingdom is one of 13 graded/group winners for Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year American Pharoah, who was represented later on the card by GI Beholder Mile heroine As Time Goes By. Five Star Day is the broodmare sire of five graded/group winners.

Dam Just Louise took the 2010 GIII Debutante S. before selling for $270,000 in 2012 and then to Gabriel Duignan for $150,000 while in foal to Malibu Moon at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton November sale. The half-sister to MGSW Sara Louise (Malibu Moon) has provided a solid ROI for Duignan under his Springhouse Farm banner and through his Paramount Sales consignment–an Orb colt fetched $300,000; a Malibu Moon filly cost $310,000; and, following Forbidden Kingdom, a Bolt d'Oro colt cost $275,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale. Just Louise produced a filly last year by the white hot Not This Time, and most recently visited Tiz the Law.

O’Neill Hoping The Great One Can ‘Rebound’ In Santa Anita Derby

Doug O'Neill hopes The Great One rebounds from his disappointing fifth-place finish behind recently sidelined Life Is Good in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes on March 6 when he runs in the Grade 1 Runhappy Santa Anita Derby next Saturday, April 3.

Named for NHL superstar Wayne Gretzky, The Great One was coming off a smashing 14-length maiden win prior to the San Felipe, in which he finished almost 17 lengths behind Life Is Good after bumping a rival at the start and going four-wide into the stretch before weakening.

“The Great One is scheduled to work tomorrow and as long as that goes well and he comes out of it in good shape, that's the plan,” said O'Neil, who posted back-to-back Santa Anita Derby victories with eventual Kentucky Derby winner I'll Have Another in 2012 and Goldencents in 2013.

“Abel (Cedillo) will be back on him and we're excited about getting another chance against these caliber of horses,” O'Neill said. 'We're real happy with The Great One and think he can rebound and run a big race.”

Team O'Neill obviously was delighted with Hot Rod Charlie's dominant triumph in the Louisiana Derby on March 20. The son of Oxbow will train up to the Run for the Roses, which the trainer also won in 2016 with Nyquist, 2020's leading freshman sire.

“He's back here at Santa Anita and looks great,” O'Neill said of Hot Rod Charlie. “We're optimistic about the first Saturday in May with him.”

The Runhappy Santa Anita Derby headlines six stakes next Saturday, four of them graded and two showcasing California-bred or sired runners.

In addition to the Runhappy Santa Anita Derby, they are the Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles; the Grade 2 Royal Heroine for fillies and mares four and up at one mile on turf; and the Grade 3 Providencia Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/8 miles on turf.

Also, two Golden State Series races, the $150,000 Echo Eddie Stakes for 3-year-olds at 6 ½ furlongs and the $150,000 Evening Jewel Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at 6 ½ furlongs.

In all, the six stakes offer $1,750,000 in purse money.

Unbeaten Life Is Good to Miss Runhappy Santa Anita Derby

Unbeaten star 3-year-old 'TDN Rising Star' Life Is Good (Into Mischief) came out of a workout Saturday at Santa Anita with what appears to be a minor problem, one that will keep him from starting in the GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby.

According to Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, the horse was off in his left hind leg.

Baffert said it was too early to tell if Life Is Good could still make the GI Kentucky Derby. But Elliott Walden, the president and CEO of WinStar Farm, the co-owners of the horse, told horseracingnation.com that Life Is Good would be “out for a few months.” If that turns out to be the case, he will not make the Derby. In the last round of betting in the Derby Future wager, Life Is Good was the 2-1 favorite.

Life Is Good worked six furlongs in a bullet 1:11.40 Saturday. Initially, Baffert was pleased with what he saw.

“He breezed really well,” he said. “Cooling out, we noticed the problem. Something is going on. It's nothing obvious. It's not that he's lame. He just isn't 100%.”

Baffert said the recent runaway winner of the GII San Felipe S. may be sent to Dr. Larry Bramlage for tests.

“The timing is bad,” Baffert said. “It's disappointing and frustrating. He is such a brilliant horse. At least this is not something that should be career ending.”

While Baffert may not be able to run what is considered his best 3-year-old in the Derby, he has a powerful bench. He has four other horses that have enough points at this juncture to make the Derby.

That group is led by GII Rebel S. winner and fellow 'Rising Star' Concert Tour (Street Sense).
