The Chosen Vron Expected to Be Supplemented to Breeders’ Cup

The Chosen Vron (Vronsky) earned a free entry into the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint with his victory in the GI Bing Crosby S. Saturday at Del Mar, but the 5-year-old gelding is not nominated to the Breeders' Cup and will need to be supplemented for $100,000 to make it into championship weekend.

“We definitely are going to supplement for the Sprint,” trainer and co-owner Eric Kruljac said Sunday. “Especially since it's at Santa Anita this year. We'll possibly look for a prep. Long range, you look at your options, but with horses it's a day-to-day thing with their health and such.”

The Bing Crosby was The Chosen Vron's eighth straight victory and first Grade I tally.

“He's perfect this morning,” Kruljac said. “He's a survivor. He had a lot left at the wire. He could have gone another quarter, I think. Watching the replays, he looked the strongest. I think he could be a miler.”

A next start has not yet been determined for Senor Buscador (Mineshaft), who gave trainer Todd Fincher his first stakes victory at Del Mar with his upset score in the GII San Diego H. Saturday.

He's tired,” Fincher said of the 5-year-old. “He ran hard.”

Of his first Del Mar stakes win, Fincher said, “It's great. I mean to win a Grade II at Del Mar is pretty high on your list. It's nice.”

Fincher did not commit to a next start for his charge.

“We don't know,” he said. “We'll either go seven furlongs or the mile and a quarter; we just haven't decided.”

San Diego Top Three Return in Pac Classic

The top three finishers from the July 17 GII San Diego H. line up once again, joined by several fresh faces, in Saturday's GI TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar, a “Win and You're In” for the GI Breeders' Cup Classic. The winner of that event was Express Train (Union Rags), who earned a 101 Beyer Speed Figure for that half-length score. Winner of the GII San Pasqual S. earlier this term, the bay was second in the GI Santa Anita H. in March and third to subsequent GI Met Mile winner Silver State (Hard Spun) in the GII Oaklawn H. Apr. 17. He also completed the trifecta in the GI Hollywood Gold Cup May 31.

San Diego runner-up Tripoli (Kitten's Joy) was making his black-type bow in the San Diego and third-place Royal Ship (Brz) (Midshipman) won the GII Californian S. in April.

Todd Pletcher ships in from New York with a strong contender in Dr Post (Quality Road). Capturing the GIII Westchester S. in his seasonal bow May 1, the dark bay checked in fifth in the Met Mile June 5 and returned to winning ways in the GIII Monmouth Cup July 17.

Tizamagician (Tiznow) has developed into a force to be reckoned with as a 4-year-old and has a shot at Grade I glory here. Romping by nine lengths in the GIII Tokyo City S. Apr. 18, the dark bay was second in Belmont's GII Brooklyn S. June 5 and rebounded with a win in Del Mar's 12-furlong GIII Cougar II S. July 18.

Sheriff Brown To Start In Pacific Classic For Fincher

Trainer Todd Fincher said by phone from his Ruidoso, NM, headquarters that Joe Peacock homebred Sheriff Brown should be counted 'in' for the TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

“He came out of his work well and it looks like it's a go,” Fincher said.

Sheriff Brown, a gelded 5-year-old son of Curlin, shipped in from Texas for the  TVG Pacific Classic prep San Diego Handicap on July 17 and finished seventh of eight, beaten 8 ¾ lengths by Express Train.

“That was pretty much a throw-out,” Fincher said of the San Diego. “He had just shipped in and wasn't comfortable in his surroundings. And he's a horse that needs to be comfortable with his surroundings. We expect a lot better effort this time.”

Sheriff Brown has six wins from 21 lifetime starts and has been second or third on eight other occasions to accumulate earnings of $232,811. Fourteen of those races were at a mile or less.

“I've always wanted to try him at a longer distance, like a mile and a quarter,” Fencher said. “There are a lot of unknowns, but we're going to try it.”

Edwin Maldonado, aboard for the San Diego, has the call in the Classic.

Shirreffs Works Pacific Classic Nominees Express Train, Midcourt

TVG Pacific Classic nominees Express Train and Midcourt recorded six-furlongs workouts for trainer John Shirreffs this morning with Express Train being the fastest, by nearly two seconds, of the pair.

Express Train, under Juan Hernandez, was timed in 1:12.20, fastest of 12 workers at the distance. Toby Turrell caught the 4-year-old son of Union Rags, winner of the San Diego Handicap on July 17, with splits of :24.0, :36.20, :47.60 and :59.80 en route to the official clocking and had him galloping out to seven furlongs in 1:26.40.

Midcourt, a 6-year-old gelded son of Midnight Lute, was timed in 1:14.60 under Edwin Maldonado. Midcourt ended a six-month layoff with an allowance victory at Santa Anita in June.

Shirreffs said he was pleased with both works but was, “leaning” toward running only Express Train.
