Sam Houston Postpones Interstate Simulcast Wagering

Despite previously announcing that interstate simulcast wagering would resume Friday, Feb. 3, Sam Houston released a statement Friday morning postponing it.

“We have determined that more time is needed to fully evaluate the many legal complexities surrounding recent court decisions and the HISA amendment enacted by Congress at the end of last year,” the statement read. “While we are eager to export our signal across the country, our commitment to maintaining federal and state compliance remains our top priority. We will export our signal across state lines when we are confident that it can be done in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. Until then, we will only broadcast our signal throughout Texas and to approved international locations but will not simulcast to any other locations in the United States.”

Sam Houston, Lone Star Apply For 2023 Race Dates

Edited Press Release

During Wednesday's meeting of the Texas Racing Commission meeting, Sam Houston Park General Manager Dwight Berube confirmed that the Houston-area track will apply for 43 live race dates in 2023, beginning Jan. 6, 2023. The 2023 Texas live racing schedule will be similar to 2022, as Lone Star Park has already applied for 48 days.

While plans for the overall stakes program have not been finalized, the 2023 race meet at Sam Houston will feature the inaugural running of the $100,000 Texas Thoroughbred Association Derby and Oaks for graduates of the 2021 TTA Yearling Sale and 2022 TTA Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale.  The schedule will also include 10 Texas-bred stakes and two legs of the Clarence Schaubauer, Jr. Texas Stallion S.

“With Monday's Texas Thoroughbred Association Yearling Sale on the immediate horizon, we appreciate the continued support of the Texas tracks,” TTA Executive Director Mary Ruyle said.  “On Monday, we will offer more than 200 yearlings, which is the most in recent history. Over the past couple years, we have made great strides in the quality of racing in Texas.”

Handicapper, Sam Houston Racecaller Nick Tammaro Joins Bettor Things

Nick Tammaro has been known in public handicapping and tournament circles for nearly a decade now, having proven his sharp opinion on the New York Racing Association's Talking Horses pre-race handicapping show and in contest spots as prominent as the Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge. But Tammaro took on what he calls the “biggest professional challenge” of his life earlier this year at his hometown track, Sam Houston Race Park, when he started his first job as a full-time racecaller.

Tammaro just wrapped up his first Thoroughbred meet as the announcer at the player-friendly track and took a break before calling quarter horses Friday night to join the third episode of Bettor Things with Joe Bianca, TDN's handicapping-focused one-on-one conversation podcast. Bianca and Tammaro had an engaging, funny and illuminating 40-minute discussion that touched on a wide variety of topics: the debate over the Triple Crown's spacing, sports betting, fixed-odds wagering, how to keep your mind focused during the chaos of a major handicapping tournament, their shared schadenfreude for James Harden's playoff failures, what the racing and handicapping landscape will look like in 10-15 years and much more. Then, in his future bets segment, Bianca gave out bets for the French Open, two each on the men's and women's sides.
