Equibase Adds Filtering Options To North American Entries Section

The ability to filter entries by a variety of categories has been incorporated within the North American entries section on equibase.com, it was announced today by Equibase Company President and Chief Operating Officer Sal Sinatra.

“People who use equibase.com view entries information more than any other section of our website, so we are pleased to be able to add this feature for those who want to see only a particular category of upcoming races,” Sinatra said. “As an example, a handicapper who enjoys betting on races with large fields can now easily find races that fit those criteria.”

With this new feature, users have the ability to filter entries for all tracks with current entries or entries specific to their favorite track. There are six race types that can be filtered: maiden, maiden claiming, claiming, allowance, stakes and handicaps, and graded stakes races. The other categories users can now filter through when viewing entries are distance, surface, purse, ages of the horses entered, and number of starters in the race.

Equibase Company is a partnership between subsidiaries of The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Racing Associations of North America and serves as the Thoroughbred industry's official database. Through its website and mobile applications, Equibase offers a comprehensive array of free statistical information as well as premium handicapping products and reports in support of the North American Thoroughbred racing industry.

Sinatra Named Equibase President

Sal Sinatra has been named the next president of Equibase Company LLC by the Equibase Management Committee, effective June 21. Sinatra succeeds Jason Wilson, who departed Equibase to join The Stronach Group this past April.

Sinatra, who completed a double major in Mathematics and Statistics from Rutgers, was an assistant clerk at the Daily Racing Form and in 1985, he became a racing official at Monmouth Park and the Meadowlands. He was also the assistant racing secretary at Beulah Park in Ohio.

Between 1990 and 1999, Sinatra was president and ownership partner of TSNS, which was acquired by The Jockey Club as part of InCompass Solutions. He then spent 15 years as vice president of Racing and racing secretary at Parx Racetrack and Casino in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, before becoming president and general manager of Maryland Jockey Club in 2014.

“Sal is a longtime participant in the Thoroughbred industry, and the Equibase Management Committee knows he will be a valuable asset to the Equibase team,” said Ian D. Highet, chairman of Equibase. “His analytical background, management experience, and firsthand knowledge of every aspect of racing will guide Equibase in developing a strategic path forward for its products and services.”

Added Sinatra: “I have spent my entire career in Thoroughbred racing and have worked with Equibase since its inception. I have tried to be an innovative leader and that will be reflected in my leadership of Equibase,” Sinatra said. “My experience as a technician and working at racetracks puts me in a unique position to maximize what Equibase has to offer the industry.”

Sal Sinatra has been named president of Equibase Company LLC by the Equibase Management Committee, effective June 21, 2021. He succeeds Jason G. Wilson, who left Equibase in April to join The Stronach Group.

Laurel Park Adds Seven Thursday Programs To Make Up For Lost Dates

The Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and Maryland Jockey Club have agreed to add racing days over the next several months to make up for multiple cancellations in the winter and early spring because of weather conditions and equine herpesvirus (EHV-1) restrictions.

MJC earlier announced that the Spring Stakes Spectacular program originally scheduled for April 17 at Laurel Park has been moved to the following Saturday, April 24. Extra races listed for Thursday, April 15, will move to Saturday, April 17, and racing will not be held April 15. The program slated for Friday, April 16, has been moved to Monday, April 19. So racing will be held April 17-19 instead of April 15-18.

Only horses stabled at Laurel Park are eligible to enter and race through the end of the EHV-1 quarantine April 17. The quarantine at Pimlico Race Course is scheduled to end April 12.

Live racing had been scheduled for three days a week—Friday through Sunday—at Laurel Park in June and July. Seven Thursday programs have been added on June 3, 10, 17 and 24; and July 1, 8 and 15. The summer meet concludes with racing on a Friday-through-Sunday schedule until Aug. 22.

“We're trying to make up days for the world's trifecta—Mother Nature, COVID-19 and the EHV-1 quarantine,” MJC President Sal Sinatra said. “We'll make up the opportunities as the races fill. And hopefully, we'll be back to normal operations with our turf course in June after the Pimlico meet.

The Laurel Park spring meet ends Sunday, May 2. Pimlico will race 15 days from May 5-31. The Laurel summer meet begins Thursday, June 3.
