Camelot’s Pensee Du Jour Romps To Rose de Mai Triumph

Ballymore Thoroughbred Racing's undefeated 3-year-old filly Pensee Du Jour (Ire) (Camelot {GB}–Painter's Pride {Fr}, by Dansili {GB}) delivered a spectacular winning debut last month, attaining 'TDN Rising Star' status with a four-length tally atop Chantilly's all-weather surface, and made a smooth transition into black-type company with an impressive pillar-to-post victory on the turf in Thursday's Listed Prix Rose de Mai at Saint-Cloud. The 1-2 favourite broke smartly and held sway throughout the 10-furlong contest. Unflustered and dominating into the straight, she was allowed an inch of rein soon after passing the quarter-mile marker and lengthened clear in effortless style in the latter stages to easily outclass toiling rivals by daylight. At the line, she was seven lengths too good for the overmatched Olkovskha (Fr) (Zelzal {Fr}), herself three lengths clear of Cracksmania (GB) (Cracksman {GB}).

“It was not the plan to make the running, but she has early speed and the idea was to travel handy,” explained rider Mickael Barzalona. “We found ourselves in front and she settled well and travelled smoothly. She is an easy ride, she does what you want and has a nice acceleration. You can feel that she still has a lot to learn, but what she has done so far is very good and most promising. She has all it takes to make a top filly and has a lot going for her, but still has a few steps to climb to get there.”

Pensee Du Jour is the latest of three reported foals, all winners, produced by an unraced daughter of GII Long Island H.-winning matriarch Peinture Bleue (Alydar). The January-foaled homebred bay–who boasts entries in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, G1 Prix Saint-Alary and G1 Prix de Diane–is a half-sister to Group 3-winning G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen third Canvassed (Ire) (Shamardal). Peinture Bleue, in turn, is responsible for a sextet of stakes performers, headed by MG1SW sire Peintre Celebre (Nureyev), G2 Prix de Pomone victrix Peinture Rare (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and G3 Prix de Barbeville winner Pointilliste (Giant's Causeway). Her many black-type descendants also include MG1SW dual South African champion Jet Dark (SAf) (Trippi).

Roaring Lion Colt Battles To Criterium de Saint-Cloud Triumph

Ahmad Al Shaikh's Dubai Mile (Ire) (Roaring Lion–Beach Bunny {Ire}, by High Chaparral {Ire}) backed up victories at Windsor and Kempton in August with a half-length second in last month's G2 Royal Lodge S. at Newmarket and stepped forward to register a determined success in Saturday's G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, becoming the first Group 1 winner from the lone crop of his sire (by Kitten's Joy). The 49-10 chance was swiftly into stride and led through the early fractions of this 10-furlong test. Headed on the turn for home, he came under pressure at the top of the straight to regain a slender advantage passing the quarter-mile marker and was driven out in the closing stages to deny fellow British challenger Arrest (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) by a head after a to-and-fro tussle, the duo six lengths clear of the remainder headed by Adelaide River (Ire) (Australia {GB}).

“He came second in the Royal Lodge so, in that sense, he has exactly the same profile to [2020 winner] Gear Up,” said trainer Mark Johnston after claiming a second win in the contest. “They are similar horses in other ways and this fellow clearly looks like he stays and will stay further. It's sad that the sire's no longer with us and we've had a lot of success with his first crop.”

Reflecting on Dubai Mile's performance, Johnston added, “It's fantastic the way he has come back and it was a tremendous ride by the jockey. I think we all thought we were looking for fourth place on the bend and Daniel [Muscutt] said he felt it would have been a mistake to rush the horse when he was headed and he gradually worked back into it. That was clearly the right decision. The horse has surprised a lot of people, including us, along the way because he has a style of racing where he looks green in every race. That was his fifth race and he still looks a little bit green, but he's clearly got a tremendous attitude. When he's got something to aim at he keeps finding a bit more.”

Looking ahead, the trainer continued, “[Owner] Ahmad Al Shaikh has some very clever ideas and has helped campaign the horse very well. He was due to be sold before the Royal Lodge, but the deal was never completed. He's in the [Tattersalls] Horses-in-Training sale next week and he may yet go there.”

Pedigree Notes
Dubai Mile is the ninth foal and scorer produced by stakes-winning G1 Pretty Polly S. runner-up Beach Bunny (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}), herself the leading performer out of an unraced half-sister to G1 1000 Guineas heroine Miss France (Ire) (Dansili {GB}). Beach Bunny is kin to the dam of G3 Grosser Preis von Lotto Hamburg victor King David (Den) (Elusive City). The March-foaled chestnut is kin to stakes-winning dual Group 3 placegetter Naadirr (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), Listed Naas Fillies Sprint victrix Beach Belle (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and a weanling colt by Sottsass (Fr). Beach Belle, in turn, is the dam of Listed King Charles II S. winner Surf Dancer (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}).

Auguste Rodin Heads Field Of Eight For Doncaster’s G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy

Aidan O'Brien has trimmed his overnight entry of eight down to two for Saturday's £200,000 G1 Vertem Futurity at Doncaster, Europe's final juvenile Group 1 contest of the season. TDN Rising Star and G2 Golden Fleece S. victor Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) is the mount of Ryan Moore and has been allocated stall six for the one-mile test. He is set to be joined by Navan maiden winner Salt Lake City (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who will depart from the eight box. The home defence is spearheaded by John and Thady Gosden's G3 Autumn S. runner-up Epictetus (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), another TDN Rising Star who has drawn post seven. Ballydoyle also sends a contingent of three for the two Group 1 contests at Saint-Cloud, with Espionage (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) set to tackle the one-mile G1 Criterium International earlier in the afternoon and Adelaide River (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and Covent Garden (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) declared for the 10-furlong G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud. TDN Rising Star and G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere third Breizh Sky (Fr) (Pedro The Great) leads the home defence in the former contest while just two French-trained runners–Strako (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) and Sylphid (GB) (Zoffany {Ire})–line up against a seven-strong overseas challenge in the latter.

€1-Million Classic Colt Leads The Way At The Arc Sale

Quality bloodstock has been in high demand at a range of venues and all price points on an international scale despite ongoing political upheaval in 2022, and Arqana's Arc Sale at Saint-Cloud on Saturday evening continued that trend.

Dominating the buyers' sheets was Jean-Pierre de Gaste and Alexandra Saint Martin's International Thoroughbred Consultants (I.T.C.). The duo picked up a quintet of horses, including the Classic-placed Schwarzer Peter (Ger) (Neatico {Ger}) (lot 17)–the €1-million sales topper–exclusively on behalf of Sheikh Haif Mohammed Al Qahtani's Haif Company. Those five lots grossed €2.94 million or 37% of the overall aggregate.

Sold midway through the boutique event, the 3-year-old colt was offered by trainer Markus Klug. A winner as a juvenile and second in the G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten, the son of the listed-placed Sovalla (GB) (Pomellato {Ger}) added the G3 Dr. Busch-Memorial at three, before a career-best effort when second in the G1 Deutsches Derby. Since that race, Schwarzer Peter has placed again at Group 3 level, this time in Baden-Baden's G3 Preis der Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe. The relative of G3 Prix Edmond Blanc winner Silas Marner (Fr) (Muhtathir {GB}) holds entries in several more group races this campaign too, including the G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern at Munich on Nov. 6.

The Aga Khan Studs' Listed Prix Marchande d'Or victor Rozgar (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) (lot 21) also joined the Haif Company fold when making €800,000. The son of the stakes-placed Roshanara (Fr) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) comes from a deep pedigree featuring G1 Prix Marcel Boussac victress Rosanara (Fr) (Sinndar {Ire}), the multiple group winner Rajsaman (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}), and the G1 Caulfield Guineas/G1 Caulfield S. hero Whobegotyou (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}).

Just one lot prior to Schwarzer Peter, I.T.C. shelled out €480,000 for Sept. 1 G3 Prix de Lutece scorer Master Gatsby (Fr) (The Grey Gatsby {Ire}). The 3-year-old colt is out of the Group 3 heroine Moonee Valley (Fr) (Aqlaam {GB}) and was sent through the ring by Fabrice Chappet.

They also picked up lot 9, the winning filly Trop Prete (Fr) (Intello {Ger}), a granddaughter of GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine Halfbridled (Unbridled) from Wertheimer & Frere for €250,000; and Didier Guillemin's lot 45, the Dabirsim (Fr) colt Making Moovies (Fr), who hammered at €410,000. The latter has placed three times in group company and was also second in the Sept. 2 Listed Prix Millkom as a sophomore.

Sam Wright snapped up dual Group 3 scorer Rocchigiani (GB) (Time Test {GB}) for a cool €575,000 from Peter Schiergen's consignment near the end of the day's trade. Sold as lot 43, the 3-year-old son of German listed winner Ronja (El Corredor) has been entered in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot on QIPCO British Champions Day. He is also a half-brother to listed winner Ross (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}).

Dubawi (Ire)'s 5-year-old gelding Dilawar (Ire) (lot 38) caught the eye of Oliver St Lawrence, who paid €500,000 to acquire the 2021 G3 Prix Quincey luminary. This term, the son of G1 Dubai Sheema Classic winner Dolniya (Fr) (Azamour {Ire}) has been runner-up in the G2 Prix du Muguet and, later in the season, the G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil on Sept. 16. The Aga Khan Studs-consigned bay is from the same family as G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hero Dalakhani (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}), who captured the Parisian showpiece in 2003.

“We've bought him for a client of Fawzi Naas, who will be training him in Bahrain,” said Dobell. “He comes from a great place. We're delighted.”

From 34 lots through the ring, the same number as in 2021, 27 found new homes (79.4%) for a gross of €7,880,000. The average and median were both up on 2021, as well, at €291,852 (+11.5%) and €215,000 (+34.4%), respectively.

Arqana President Eric Hoyeau and Executive Director Freddy Powell said, “We would like to thank all our vendors who entrusted us with horses of this quality. For an elite sale, the percentage of horses sold is exceptional, which testifies to the quality of the horses presented and also to the attractiveness of the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe weekend. Every year, the sale attracts an international clientele, as shown by tonight's purchases from Saudi Arabia, Australia, Bahrain, the United States, Europe, Hong Kong etc. We wish them all the best for the future.”
