Above The Curve Makes All For Prix Corrida Triumph, Nashwa Eclipsed In Fourth

Last term's G1 Prix Saint-Alary and G2 Blandford S. heroine Above The Curve (American Pharoah–Fabulous {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) encountered stellar opposition in Sunday's G2 Prix Corrida at Saint-Cloud and halted a three-race losing streak with a pillar-to-post victory in the 10 1/2-furlong contest.

Coolmore and Westerberg's 'TDN Rising Star' was undone by Saint-Alary runner-up Place Du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and the reopposing Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}) when third in October's G1 Prix de l'Opera before running seventh in both November's GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf and this month's G2 Mooresbridge S. on seasonal return last time.

The eventual winner was swiftly into stride and held sway at a comfortable pace. In command throughout, the 47-10 chance was shaken up when threatened at the top of the straight and stayed on relentlessly under a drive inside the final quarter-mile to hit the line strong with a two-length buffer from Mqse De Sevigne (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}). German raider India (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) kept on well to finish one length adrift third while 'TDN Risng Star' Nashwa, who held every chance turning for home, faded out of contention in the latter stages and finished another 1 1/4 lengths back in fourth.

“I am delighted to win this race for Joseph O'Brien and in these famous silks too,” said Maxime Guyon. “We used to ride together and know each other very well indeed. He said that she is a very straightforward filly with a huge action and to go on if nobody wanted the lead. She travelled beautifully and quickened well. She had the race in the bag quite early.”

Hollie Doyle, reflecting on a satisfactory return to action for G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Nassau S. heroine Nashwa, added, “She's a big, burly mare and I think she just got tired. She's grown a lot and has put on a lot of weight. She had a busy year last year and was coming back off her first proper break. She probably needed the run and I think she'll come on for it.”

Pedigree Notes
Above The Curve is the third of six reported foals and one of two scorers produced by an unraced sibling of eight black-type performers headed by MG1SW sire Giant's Causeway (Storm Cat). Godolphin’s Tribalist Dominates Saint-Cloud Feature

Godolphin's Tribalist (GB) (Farhh {GB}–Fair Daughter {GB}, by Nathaniel {Ire}), who hit the board in last term's G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains, took care of business in Saint-Cloud's G3 Prix Edmond Blanc on seasonal return last month and revisited the Parisian venue to dominate Monday's G2 Prix du Muguet.

The 27-10 second choice broke smartly from the inside stall to gain early control and held a two-length advantage into the home straight. Untroubled throughout, he was shaken up with 300 metres remaining and ridden out inside the final furlong to easily hold the late threat of familiar rival Facteur Cheval (Ire) (Ribchester {Ire}) by 1 1/4 lenths for a second pattern-race score. It was the same margin back to 27-10 favourite Erevann (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) in third.

“Tribalist is a very consistent horse and goes on any ground,” insisted trainer Andre Fabre. “He always gives his best and, all being well, he will go for the [May 20 G1] Lockinge S. at Newbury.”

Pedigree Notes
Tribalist is the first of four foals and lone performer produced by an unraced half-sister to five black-type performers headed by G1 Racing Post Trophy-winning sire Crowded House (GB) (Rainbow Quest). Descendants of his second dam Wiener Wald (Woodman) also include multiple Group 1-winning sire Reckless Abandon (GB) (Exchange Rate), multiple Grade I-winning distaffer Ticker Tape (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}) and G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest hero Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). The February-foaled chestnut, who hails from the family of GISW sire Storm Cat (Storm Bird), is a full-brother to the unraced 2-year-old filly Fair Point (GB) and half to a yearling filly by Make Believe (GB).

Saxon Warrior’s Greenland Prevails In Greffulhe Thriller

Aidan O'Brien trainee Greenland (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}–Aktoria {Fr}, by Canford Cliffs {Ire}) lined up for Monday's G3 Prix Greffulhe coming back off a third in last month's G3 Prix La Force at ParisLongchamp and dipped into deep reserves to prevail in a thrilling finish to the 10 1/2-furlong test. He had concluded a five-race juvenile campaign with a fourth in Newmarket's Sept. 24 G2 Royal Lodge S. in his penultimate start and stalked the pace in second for the most part. Readied for his challenge passing the quarter-mile marker, he joined long-time leader Harry Way (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) approaching the final furlong and was driven out to deny that tenacious opponent by a nose in a nip-and-tuck tussle.

“He is a physically imposing colt who, gave me a great feeling going to post on the dirt surface,” said winning rider Christophe Soumillon. “It wasn't easy on that very soft ground today, which is why I didn't want to come too late and I anticipated the move early in the straight. He will come on for that and no doubt that he will be among the favourites for the [G1 Prix du] Jockey Club.” Coolmore representative Hermine Bastide added, “We are very happy to win as it is quite important for Saxon Warrior. Soft ground is not what he prefers and, all being well, he will come back to France for the Prix du Jockey Club.”

Pedigree Notes
Greenland, who becomes the fourth pattern-race winner for his second-crop sire, is the third of five foals and one of two scorers for Listed Prix Six Perfections victrix Aktoria (Fr) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}). Aktoria is kin to G3 Prix d'Arenberg third Galaktea (Ire) (Statue of Liberty), the dual stakes-placed Now You're Talking (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and to the dam of stakes-winning GII Santa Ana S. placegetter Sweet Charity (Fr) (Myboycharlie {Ire}). Greenland's stakes-winning third dam Epagris (GB) (Zalazl), who also ran second in the G3 Nell Gwyn S., is the leading performer for Trikymia (Final Straw {GB}) and thus hails from the family of G1 Irish Derby-winning sire Tyrnavos (GB) (Blakeney {GB}), G1 Dewhurst S. hero Tromos (GB) (Busted {GB}) and G1 Middle Park S. victor Tachypous (GB) (Hotfoot {GB}). Aktoria also has the unraced 2-year-old colt Benimaru (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) and a yearling colt by Starspangledbanner (Aus) to come.

Dubawi’s The Revenant Registers Listed Prix Altipan Hat-Trick

Al Asayl France's homebred 2020 G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. hero The Revenant (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}–Hazel Lavery {Ire}, by Excellent Art {GB}), returning off an Oct. 15 seventh when making his fourth start in the Ascot benchmark last time, registered a hat-trick in Saint-Cloud's Listed Prix Altipan with a comfortable win in Thursday's latest edition of the one-mile test. It was the 8-year-old gelding's sixth success in eight outings over the track's course and distance. Settling into a smooth rhythm racing at the tail of the eight-runner field into the straight, the 3-5 favourite made relentless progress saving ground along the far-side rail to launch his challenge with 300 metres remaining and was pushed out to defeat Anthorus (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) by 1 1/4 lengths in snug fashion.

“He is such a special horse for us and by winning this race for the third time shows us that he can still compete at a high level at the age of eight,” commented Francis Graffard. “That's what I wanted to find out with this first start, to see if he still possessed his fighting spirit, because he had a hard race last time out at Ascot. The race unfolded perfectly for him. He settled into a great rhythm, it was a ground-saving trip on the inside and he idled once in front because he knows the job. I didn't work him too hard at home and he will come on for the run. The program is straightforward and it should be the [G3 Prix] Edmond Blanc and then the [G2 Prix du] Muguet. However, he will not run if the going is not soft enough. He needs that ground, more than ever, and didn't really get it last year.”

The Revenant, a half-brother to the hitherto untried 3-year-old filly Andraste (GB) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), is the second of five foals and lone winner produced by G3 St Simon S. victrix Hazel Lavery (Ire) (Excellent Art {GB}), herself a half-sister to MGSP Czech champion Leo Gali (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The April-foaled chestnut's third dam Rapid Repeat (Ire) (Exactly Sharp) is kin to four black-type performers headed by G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial-winning sire Artema (Ire) (Common Grounds {GB}).
