Retired Racehorse To Again Compete In Sagamore Farm Silks

Barry Lee, a 6-year-old son of Violence foaled by Machmer Hall, has made his way back to the Bluegrass, this time as a competition mount. Purchased by Sagamore Farm for $380,000 when he was two, Barry won his debut under the Sagamore banner, was claimed twice and was slated to run at Fonner Park (NE) in early 2021 for a $2,500 claiming tag.

Jordan Sigmon had been keeping an eye on horses running in the claiming ranks when she came across Barry. She figured he must be a quality horse if he had sold for so much as a 2-year-old. In hopes that she could buy him before he started again, she called his owner and offered $3,200 – money she had been saving to buy a Thoroughbred weanling.

The gelding shipped to Sigmon's barn in Kentucky, where he had some down time to get used to the laidback lifestyle retired racehorses enjoy.

Sigmon is competing Barry Lee in the virtual Real Rider Cup, a charity jumping competition featuring retired racehorses. Sigmon noted that Barry Lee had less than 20 rides before the competition. Sigmon reached out to Sagamore Farm to see if they would sponsor Barry in the competition. The farm immediately signed on, donated to the fundraiser and sent Sigmon farm silks to wear while competing.

Hunter Rankin Named Churchill Downs’ Senior Director Of Racing

Churchill Downs Incorporated announced Tuesday that Hunter Rankin has been hired as Senior Director of Racing for the Company. The role was recently vacated following Mike Ziegler's promotion to General Manager of Churchill Downs Racetrack in December 2020.

As CDI's Senior Director of Racing, Rankin will act as a representative and liaison to the U.S. Thoroughbred racing and breeding industry and champion Company initiatives aimed at supporting and enhancing the racing and breeding landscape. He will focus on the implementation of standards and processes outlined in the Horse Racing Integrity and Safety Act (“HISA”) across all of the Company's racing properties while representing CDI's interests as an advocate for important issues and policies within the racing and breeding industry.

“Hunter brings to this role a breadth of relationships he has developed with key stakeholder groups within the racing and breeding industries,” said Bill Mudd, President and Chief Operating Officer of CDI. “His keen familiarity with HISA will help lead the Company and its racing assets into a successful future within a continuously-changing and evolving industry.”

Prior to this role, Rankin was the President of Sagamore Farm where he oversaw all farm and Sagamore Racing operations while also building Sagamore Farm as a hospitality asset. He previously served as Executive Vice President of Sagamore Development (now known as Weller Development) and as a Partner at Sterling Thompson Company where he managed commercial insurance profiles for large real estate, construction and equine businesses.

Rankin holds a bachelor's degree in public relations from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and is the son of R. Alex Rankin, chairman of the board of Churchill Downs Inc.

Across The Board With Andy Serling: Horacio DePaz

Following an extended hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Across the Board with Andy Serling podcast returns this week featuring an interview with trainer Horacio DePaz.

The 35-year-old DePaz, who grew up watching Quarter Horses as a teenager in his native Texas, discusses his life in racing including working on the backstretch of Louisiana Downs; serving as an exercise rider and assistant for Kentucky Derby-winning trainers John Servis and Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas; as well as assisting Todd Pletcher, where he looked after accomplished runners Rags to Riches, Devil May Care and Quality Road.

DePaz went out on his own in 2015 setting up shop on the Mid-Atlantic circuit training horses for Kevin Plank's historic Sagamore Farm.
Now based in both Maryland and New York, DePaz also discussed training horses for owner Barry Schwartz and making an impact on the NYRA circuit with Sharp Starr, winner of the Grade 3 Go for Wand in November at the Big A, and stakes-winning New York-bred Amundson, who is entered in the Hollie Hughes on Monday at Aqueduct.
