Racing League Team Managers Announced Ahead of Jockey Draft

The seven team managers for this year's Racing League were announced on Tuesday just days ahead of the jockey draft, which is set for Saturday, Apr. 1 at Doncaster.

Frankie Dettori was added to the roster of seven managers attempting to win this year's competition and leads a strong East team which will be one of the favourites to wrestle the title from last year's winners, Jamie Osborne's Wales & The West.

“Racing League brings something different into racing and I've really enjoyed being part of it for the last two years,” Dettori said. “The format adds a fun element while still being ultra-competitive. I will be doing everything I can to be the first player-manager to win it.”

Over £2m in prize-money will be up for grabs, with an additional £50,000 for the winning team, a £35,000 prize pool for the winning team's jockeys and £20,000 to the jockey who scores the most individual points over the competition. Among the 108 riders to have signed up for the draft are last year's leading jockeys Saffie Osborne and Sean Levey, with Oisin Murphy a noteworthy addition. Each team manager will select seven jockeys via the draft and may add a wildcard selection at any time during the competition.

A total of 135 yards have registered to compete, up from 125 in 2022. Among those set to have their first Racing League runners this year are Sir Michael Stoute, joining Frankie's ranks in The East; Michael & David Easterby extending their family ties in Yorkshire and Hughie Morrison adding strength to Scotland.

The seven team managers are:

• London & The South–Matt Chapman
• Scotland–Linda Perratt
• The East–Frankie Dettori
• The North–Mick Quinn
• Wales & The West–Jamie Osborne
• Yorkshire–Leonna Mayor

Racing League kicks at Yarmouth on July 27 and continues at Chepstow, Windsor, Newcastle and Wolverhampton before concluding at Southwell on Sept. 13. All six fixtures will be shown live on ITV Racing and Sky Sports Racing.

Bahrain Turf Series Draws UK Raiders

The inaugural £550,000 10-race Bahrain Turf Series begins in the Kingdom of Bahrain on Dec. 10, and several UK trainers are sending runners to compete. Consisting of 10 £50,000 handicaps, the series will last through Feb. 18, 2022.

Based in Lambourn is trainer Jamie Osborne, who will ship in the pair of Brains (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) and Peerless (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}). His daughter Saffie will help manage the horses with Osborne's assistant trainer Jimmy McCarthy.

Jamie Osborne said, “Brains will run at the first meeting on Dec. 10 in the 2000m race. He's been in good form and has won three of his last five races, so he goes there at the top of his game. He will be competing from the bottom of the handicap which gives us a bit of room to manoeuvre and I think he's going to be pretty competitive.

“Peerless was bought specifically with the Bahrain Turf Series in mind. He's bang on the 85 mark, so he will be right at the bottom of the handicap. He'll run in the six-furlong races, and is a horse that is more of a five-furlong horse in Britain, but given the configuration of the track in Bahrain, hopefully six furlongs will be his optimum trip.”

Osborne added, “We were keen to get some horses to go. I've been everywhere in the Middle East except Bahrain, so I'm very much looking forward to seeing it.”

Some of the other trainers sending horses are: Derby-winning trainer Michael Bell with Ace Rothstein (More Than Ready) and five-time winner Natural Path (Ire) (Toronado {Ire}), while Charlie Hills is represented by King's Knight (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) after running seventh with Pogo (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}) in the G3 Bahrain International Trophy last month.

Team TalkSPORT Triumphs as Racing League Concludes

The William Hill Racing League ended at Newcastle on Thursday evening with Team talkSPORT crowned the winner. A total of 12 teams competed in the weekly Thursday races that began six weeks ago, with Gosforth Park, Doncaster, Windsor and Lingfield (twice) all hosting a night. Each race carried a £50,000 purse, with 25 points awarded to the winner, with points available through 10th place. Besides the £1.8 million in prizemoney on offer throughout the contest, another £200,000 in bonuses was on off with £150,000 going to the winning team.

At the top of the table with 368.5 points, Team talkSPORT consisted of trainers Michael Bell, Ed Dunlop, James Fanshawe and Roger Varian. They will split £60,000 between them. Team talkSPORT's jockeys, led by Jack Mitchell, will divide £30,000, as will the yard staff of the trainers and the owners whose horses made up the successful team.

Michael Bell's brother Rupert Bell, who co-managed the winning team with fellow broadcaster Alan Brazil, said, “I think it's been fantastic. I'm the Pep Guardiola of the racing manager world–Alan Brazil had absolutely nothing to do with it. I've been at every meeting and well done to the trainers and all their staff. Fair play to them.

“You can't knock the stable staff getting £30,000–that's fantastic. There'll be one hell of a party at Fitzroy House [Michael Bell's yard]–I better get invited.”

In second place at the end of the evening was eToro Racing with 359.5 points and Team ThoroughBid was third with 351 points. Thursday's two-time winner Jack Mitchell (276.5 points) was top of the standings among jockeys and earned £25,000, with six wins overall. Hayley Turner was runner-up with 231 points. Her prize was £15,000. In third place was Saffie Osborne, who took home £10,000.

Team Swish Leads Racing League After Week Three

Halfway through the six-week season, Team Swish leads the William Hill Racing League with 188 points. They are 10 points ahead of Team ThoroughBid after winning with The Attorney (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and Menai Bridge (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) later on the Lingfield card both for Charlie Hills. Jockey Saffie Osborne is in front of all other riders with 132 points, one point better than Jack Mitchell, and she was aboard Menai Bridge.

“We are smashing it tonight,” Team Swish racing manager Rosie Tapner told Sky Sports Racing. “I'm going to go over the top here because it's so exciting, two winners and we are flying above the leaderboard, it's great!

“I have ridden both horses, I can't take credit for them but I'm going to tonight. They're such lovely horses, I am so thrilled and Saffie must be as well. She has done amazingly, she's just absolutely flown and we've loved having her.

“We can give it over to Kieran Shoemark and Adam Kirby as well, we've got a great team. I'm hoping we can keep on flying up and if we dip down, we'll give others a chance and then throw it back at Newcastle.”

Team ThoroughBid jockey Hayley Turner booted home Richard Hannon trainee Typhoon Ten (Ire) (Slade Power {Ire}) for her second win of the series, while Team talkSPORT's Mitchell was aboard another winner with Lydford (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) from the yard of Roger Varian. In third place is Goat Racing, and they had a winner with Billhilly (Ger) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) from Charlie Fellowes's yard.
