Dark Angel’s Real World Too Strong In The Strensall

York's Saturday action kicked off in style, with the apple of Saeed bin Suroor's eye Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) again demonstrating his raw quality as his love affair with the impressive Marco Ghiani continued in the G3 Sky Bet and Symphony Group Strensall S. Dynamic in the June 16 Royal Hunt Cup at a mile and the 10-furlong Listed Steventon S. at Newbury July 17, Godolphin's progressive and as-yet untested 4-year-old was exposed on the wing early racing two lengths off the pace. Carting his rookie jockey to the front two out, the even-money favourite looked vulnerable for a few strides but stayed on again when asked a serious question to power to a 1 1/2-length success from the rock-solid 2018 winner Lord Glitters (Fr) (Whipper). “He might go France or Newmarket next, but his final race is going to be the [Oct. 16 G1] Queen Elizabeth II [at Ascot],” his trainer declared. “We took him to Dubai this year, but he was still weak. He's a nice horse who needs to improve, but every time he has run he has done and will be better next year.”

Real World is now unbeaten in three starts on turf and on Polytrack, with his sole start on that artificial surface coming on debut at Chelmsford in late October. Conversely unable to score on four outings on Meydan's dirt this winter, the imposing bay had managed a third placing in the Feb. 18 Listed Curlin S. but it was not until he stepped onto Royal Ascot's hallowed grass that he showed his true wares with a scarcely-believable 4 3/4-length romp in the always-competitive Royal Hunt Cup. The dam Nafura (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is also responsible for this year's Listed Cheshire Oaks winner Dubai Fountain (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), who was also runner-up in the G2 May Hill S. at two. She is a half-sister to three group winners headed by the stable's G1 Prix Jacques le Marois and G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp-winning sire Librettist (Danzig) and the brilliant G1 Queen Anne S. hero and sire Dubai Destination (Kingmambo).

The third dam Mysteries (Seattle Slew), who was third in the G3 Musidora S., produced three black-type winners including the G1 July Cup and G1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp hero and proven sire Agnes World (Danzig) and the Japanese champion sprinter Hishi Akebono (Woodman). She is also the ancestress of the GI Breeders' Cup Mile winner Tourist (Tiznow). Also connected to another of this stable's luminaries in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner Royal Marine (Ire) (Raven's Pass), Nafura has the 2-year-old colt Home City (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}) who was off the mark last week.

Rose Of Lancaster Headlines Saturday Action

Still an unknown quantity on turf, Godolphin's Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) takes the next step up the ladder in Saturday's G3 Rose of Lancaster S. at Haydock. Coming off an impressive success in Royal Ascot's Royal Hunt Cup June 16 to annexe the Listed Steventon S. over this 10-furlong trip at Newbury July 17, the 4-year-old is the kingpin of the Saeed bin Suroor stable and he said, “He has come back well from Newbury and he's an improving horse. He's been working well and we're happy with him now. We'll see how he gets on, but he's got some options in Group 1 races later in the year. I think good ground will be fair for him and if the rain comes we'll just have to see how he handles it.” Also featuring is the May 27 G3 Brigadier Gerard S. winner Euchen Glen (GB) (Authorized {Ire}), who was second to another bin Suroor trainee in Passion and Glory (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) in the 12-furlong G3 Glorious S. at Goodwood last Friday, and King Power Racing's June 19 Golden Gates H. winner Foxes Tales (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). The latter looks the pick of a pair of 3-year-olds and trainer Andrew Balding said, “I think the track should suit him and hopefully he gives a good performance.”

At Newmarket, there is another Godolphin representative to take centre stage among the 2-year-old fillies in the G3 Sweet Solera S. in the Charlie Appleby-trained Wild Beauty (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Last seen chasing home the unbeaten Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the Listed Star S. over this seven-furlong trip at Sandown July 22, the bay sets the standard on that effort and her handler commented, “I was pleased with the filly last time out and she has come out of that race at Sandown in good form. The winner was very impressive, but she put up another game performance finishing second. If she reproduces that run again, it would make her very competitive and probably the one to beat. She is pretty versatile with whatever ground we encounter at the weekend as she has won on soft ground and run well on quick ground.”

Mark Johnston has won this four times with three of them coming since 2014 and he puts forward the July 17 course-and-distance novice winner Value Theory (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) in the Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) silks. “We could have gone a slightly more cautious route, but the fact she won over course and distance on what is probably going to be similar ground were two positives to come here,” Charlie Johnston said. “I'm not sure of the strength of her win last time out, but she could do no more than beat what was in front of her and I would like to think she would improve again. She is a nice straightforward filly and if she runs into the 90s she should be good enough to reach the frame.” Another 2-year-old filly of note takes part in Deauville's five-furlong Listed Prix de la Vallee d'Auge in Stonestreet Stables' June 16 G2 Queen Mary S. runner-up Twilight Gleaming (Ire) (National Defense {GB}), the first of the meeting's Wesley Ward-Frankie Dettori specials.

Sunday's 6 1/2-furlong G1 LARC Prix Maurice de Gheest will feature a dozen sprinters including Stonestreet and Ward's star performer Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who returns to the scene of her victory in the G1 Prix Morny over six at last year's meeting. She is drawn in six next door to David Ward's G1 July Cup hero Starman (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) in seven, while Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez's 'TDN Rising Star' Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) is widest of all in 12. He re-opposes his July 11 G1 Prix Jean Prat conqueror Laws of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}), who is drawn against the stand's rail in one as the overseas challengers look to dominate.

Flashback: Street Cry Gives Jerry Bailey A Fourth Dubai World Cup Victory

The Dubai World Cup meeting celebrates its historic 25th anniversary on March 27, with six Group 1 races and three Group 2s, including one of the world's premier races, the $12 million Dubai World Cup, sponsored by Emirates Airline.

Over the next three weeks, the Dubai Racing Club will pay tribute to each of the previous Dubai World Cup winners. Today, we rewind to 2002 when Street Cry gave jockey Jerry Bailey his fourth and trainer Saeed bin Suroor his third Dubai World Cup title.

Champion American jockey Jerry Bailey collected his fourth victory in what was the world's richest race as the Godolphin owned and Saeed bin Suroor-trainee Street Cry dominated in the seventh running of the US$6,000,000 Group 1 Dubai World Cup.

Street Cry's success gave Bailey his fourth win in the event after Cigar (1996), Singspiel (1997) and Captain Steve (2001).

“It's great to have won this race four times but it's because I have had some nice horses to ride,” Bailey commented after the win, while for Saeed bin Suroor it was his third success after Almutawakel (1999) and Dubai Millennium (2000).

The seventh running of the Dubai World Cup proved to be a triumph for Middle East-based horses as the first five over the line were trained in either the United Arab Emirates or Saudi Arabia with the Japanese runner Agnes Digital the best from outside the area, finishing sixth. Bailey secured the ride on Street Cry after Godolphin stable jockey Frankie Dettori opted for Sakhee (winner of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe). That horse finishing third, over eight lengths away from the winner.

Street Cry was allowed to settle midfield on the inside of Sakhee and as the field approached and rounded the home turn. Sakhee went around the early leaders Western Pride and To The Victory, while Bailey had no hesitation in keeping to the fence on Street Cry. Sakhee got to the front momentarily, however Street Cry grabbed him quickly and then kicked clear. Sakhee was beginning to labour as Street Cry got a winning break at the 200m and it was Saudi Arabia's Sei Mi (fifth to Captain Steve in the 2001 Dubai World Cup) who came from last to finish second, four and a quarter lengths away.

Street Cry went to America and appeared certain to dominate after an impressive performance to win the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs before a second in the Grade 1 Whitney at Saratoga, and then injury unfortunately brought a premature retirement to Jonabell Farm.
