Walsh-Trained Extravagant Kid Tunes Up At Keeneland For Upcoming Royal Ascot Trip

DARRS Inc.'s veteran Extravagant Kid, who last won the $1 million Al Quoz Sprint (G1) Sponsored by Azizi Developments during the March 27 Dubai World Cup card, is preparing to compete at another prestigious international racing event: Royal Ascot in England. The 8-year-old gelding, who has won 15 of 50 starts and earned $1.58 million, is being considered for two races at Royal Ascot: the five-furlong King's Stand (G1) on June 15 and the six-furlong Diamond Jubilee (G1) on June 19.

Trained by Brendan Walsh, Extravagant Kid on Saturday turned in his third work at Keeneland since his Dubai performance, covering 5 furlongs in 1:02.20 in company with stakes-placed winner Lontano over a fast dirt track.

Clockers caught him in fractions of :11.80, :24, ;36, :49.60 and 1:02.20.

“He worked great. He's doing good,” Walsh said about Extravagant Kid, who would be the trainer's first starter at Royal Ascot. “Looks like he came out of the race in Dubai good and got back in good shape.”

The fact that Extravagant Kid handled the trip to and from Dubai so well gave his connections confidence in sending him to Royal Ascot.

“If it worked out good going to Dubai, why wouldn't it work out going to England?” Walsh said. “He shows that he's good enough to take on those kind of horses.”

Walsh said Ryan Moore, who rode Extravagant Kid to his Dubai victory, will ride the gelding at Royal Ascot. Extravagant Kid is to accompany the contingent of horses trained by Wesley Ward on the flight from Indianapolis.

Another Saturday worker at Keeneland for Walsh was Godolphin's Maxfield, who was clocked in :49.80 for a half-mile in his first work since winning the April 30 Alysheba (G2) Presented by Sentient Jet at Churchill Downs. The 4-year-old son of Street Sense is scheduled to make his next start in the June 26 Stephen Foster (G2) at Churchill.

“Maxfield is doing great,” said Walsh, who has around 40 horses stabled at Keeneland. “He worked nice, and we're back on the go and on to the next spot.”

Galileo’s Armory Clear Best In the Huxley

Like Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) on Thursday, Ballydoyle's Armory (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) also got his campaign off to a flyer on Chester's “Roodee” 24 hours later with a smooth success in the G2 Melodi Media Huxley S. Settled last of the four who tackled the extended 10-furlong contest, last year's G3 Royal Whip S. winner, G1 Cox Plate runner-up and G1 Irish Champion S. third swept around the outside to take over a furlong out en route to a three-length defeat of Sangarius (GB) (Kingman {GB}). “He is a very good colt with a lethal turn of foot,” Ryan Moore said of the 6-5 favourite. “It was a steady pace and a messy race, but he has such a big change of gear he could overcome that.”

One of the best of his stable at two, Armory had won Leopardstown's G3 Tyros S. and The Curragh's G2 Futurity S. and placed in the latter venue's G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. and G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at ParisLongchamp. Fourth in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas back at The Curragh last June and in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup also there in July, the bay has turned things around from that point and Aidan O'Brien is confident there is more to come. “He's really matured and has an unbelievable turn of foot,” he said. “He's done very well over the winter, he had a lovely run in Australia last year but things didn't really work out for him so we're delighted. We were thinking after this he might go for the [May 23 G1] Tattersalls Gold Cup or the [June 16 G1] Prince of Wales's [at Royal Ascot], but probably the latter. He has plenty of pace, but we always thought he'd get 10 furlongs.”

The dam After (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) descends from De Stael (Nijinsky II) whose descendants include the champion grass mare Wandesta (GB) (Nashwan) and sprinting sire Deportivo (GB) (Night Shift). A smart performer over six and seven furlongs, placing in the G3 Ballyogan S., G3 Anglesey S. and G3 Brownstown S., her first of five foals by Galileo was the useful handicapper Bond Street (Ire) while her third is the stable's 3-year-old maiden colt HMS Seahorse (Ire). A daughter of the GI Garden City Breeders' Cup-placed Noahs Ark (Ire) (Charnwood Forest {Ire}) who also produced the listed scorer Temps Au Temps (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), her 2-year-old daughter of the Coolmore great is as-yet unnamed, while her 2021 progeny is a colt.

Galileo’s Japan On Top In the Ormonde

First time over further than a mile-and-a-half facing a serious rival in Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) meant that Thursday's G3 Ormonde S. at Chester represented a tough ask for Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), but in the end his class told as the Ballydoyle stalwart opened his 5-year-old campaign on the right note. Enjoying a perfect trip on the rail nestled behind the leading duo early, the 13-8 favourite was angled out by Ryan Moore to come around Trueshan on the home bend and began to assert from the furlong pole for a 3/4-of-a-length success.

Japan Gets His Campaign Underway

Ballydoyle missed out with an unusually low-key representation at the Chester May meeting on Wednesday, but one of their big guns is rolled out on Thursday as Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) is relaunched in the G3 Ormonde S. Tackling the extended 13-furlong trip which is the furthest he has gone so far in his career, the 2019 G1 Juddmonte International and G1 Grand Prix de Paris hero looks to put a disappointing end to his 2020 season behind him. Tailing off following his third placing in the G1 Eclipse at Sandown in July, the 5-year-old will have his stamina tested by the impressive G2 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup winner Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}), who races under a five-pound penalty due to those exploits.

Ryan Moore is looking forward to being reunited with Japan. “Ideally, we probably could have done without all the recent rain, but he finished fourth in a deep ground Arc a couple of years ago and is pretty versatile and hopefully his Group 1 class will see him through,” he said. “This is the longest trip he has faced, but the way in which he has finished off his races over a mile and a half when at his best suggests it should not be an issue. It'll take a very good one to beat him if he is on his A-game.”

In the Listed Dee S., Godolphin's Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) bids to build on his comeback effort when third in the Apr. 23 G3 Sandown Classic Trial. “He's sharpened up for that run at Sandown quite noticeably at home,” trainer Charlie Appleby commented. “We're putting the cheekpieces on him, just because he's got similar characteristics to his sister [Wild Illusion]–it's not that he's ungenuine, it's just to keep him focused. We didn't want to put the cheekpieces on and step him up to a mile and a half at the same time, so we opted to keep him to 10 furlongs.”

With eight wins in this, Aidan O'Brien knows what kind of material is required and last year's G2 Royal Lodge S. runner-up and G2 Futurity S. third Ontario (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is the stable pick. Third over seven furlongs on his return in Newmarket's Listed European Free H. Apr. 14, he should appreciate this step up in trip. “He looks to hold pretty strong claims,” Ryan Moore said.  “He finished a good third in what appears a decent Free Handicap on his return, and his pedigree would give you every encouragement that the step up from seven to 10 furlongs or so here will suit this Galileo colt a lot better. He finished second in a Royal Lodge at two, while he also finished third to Mac Swiney in soft ground in the Futurity at The Curragh, so you'd have to be pretty hopeful, though his draw [in stall seven] could have been better, obviously.”
