Kingman’s TDN Rising Star Nostrum Dominates HQ Feature

Sir Michael Stoute had not won Newmarket's G3 Tattersalls S. since 1994, Annus Mirabilis (Fr) (Warning {GB}) doing the deed back when it was known as the Somerville Tattersall S., and the local elder bridged a 28-year gap after 'TDN Rising Star' Nostrum (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Mirror Lake {GB}, by Dubai Destination) asserted his superiority in taking fashion to frank the impression given on debut in July. Juddmonte's March-foaled bay had delivered a scintillating performance over seven furlongs at Sandown in that only prior outing and accepted a tow in second after a sharp getaway in this black-type bow. Sent forward to dispute the lead from halfway, the 7-4 second choice was shaken up in front passing the quarter-mile marker and kept on powerfully under mild coaxing on the climb to the line to easily tame Listed Chesham S. winner and G2 Vintage S. second Holloway Boy (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) by 1 1/4 lengths. Godolphin's G2 Superlative S. runner-up and Listed Denford S. scorer Victory Dance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) was unable to land a telling bow from off the pace and finished three lengths further back in third. Rank outsider Abravaggio (Ire) (Caravaggio) made a bold attempt from the front and was outclassed, but not disgraced, once headed and finished 15 lengths adrift of third.

“I thought it was a very warm race, but he did it very nicely first time and was entitled to come and run in a race like that,” said Stoute after notching an overall fourth winner of the race. “We expected a very big run, but for a horse racing for the first time like he was it is always difficult to fathom. It is so far so good and you could only be pleased. I don't know if we will see him again this season. We will take him home and chill him out and relax him and put him back in fast work. It is a difficult time of year, especially for 2-year-olds when the weather turns, so we don't know. I would like to give him one more run [this year].”

Holloway Boy's trainer Karl Burke was not downcast in defeat and commented, “We're delighted with that as he missed eight to 10 days with a dirty scope and missed the [G2] Champagne S. [at Doncaster]. Danny Tudhope said he would be suited by a mile, so we could look at the [Oct. 22 G1] Vertem Futurity Trophy or, beyond that, the Breeders' Cup.”

Nostrum becomes the third black-type scorer produced by the dual stakes-winning G3 Select S. runner-up Mirror Lake (GB) (Dubai Destination), herself a half-sister to the dam of Listed Lanwades Stud S. victrix Hateya (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}). The March-foaled homebred bay is a half-brother to dual Group-winning G1 C F Orr S. second Imaging (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), Listed Heatherlie S. victor Titus (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and a yearling filly by Frankel (GB). Saxon Warrior’s Victoria Road Notches Landmark Score In The Conde

Westerberg and Coolmore's 2-year-old colt Victoria Road (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}–Tickled Pink {Ire}, by Invincible Spirit {Ire}) earned his black-type stripes with a game win in last month's Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage at Deauville and continued his upward momentum with another narrow success, and a first pattern-race victory for his freshman sire (by Deep Impact {Jpn}), in Saturday's G3 Prix de Conde at Chantilly. The 19-10 second choice, who graduated at Gowran Park in his fifth attempt last month, was sharply into stride and settled off the tempo in seventh after the early shuffling. Taking closer order in the home straight, he came under a drive once leaving the quarter-mile marker behind and found extra inside the final 100 metres to edge Rashford (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) by a neck nearing the line, the duo 3 1/2 lengths clear of the remainder headed by Nasomo (Ire) (Australia {GB}).

“We are delighted with the horse and delighted for Saxon Warrior as this is his first Group winner,” reflected Coolmore representative Hermine Bastide. “Ryan [Moore] says that the horse does the minimum, but hasn't stopped improving. He is a late foal, so that is a very good sign. He is in the [G1 Prix Jean-Luc] Lagardere, but that is over seven furlongs. I am sure Aidan [”Brien] will have a look at the programme and decide which race is best for the horse. He will most certainly be entered in the [G1] Criterium de Saint Cloud.”

Victoria Road, the lone black-type scorer for his dam, is one of five winners from many runners out of G3 Abernant S. and G3 Sandown Sprint S. victrix Tickled Pink (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), herself a daughter of multiple Group-winning G1 July Cup second Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}). Camelot’s Luxembourg Prevails In Irish Champion Thriller

Saturday's G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown, a “Win And You're In” for the GI Breeders' Cup Turf in at Keeneland in November, turned out every bit as exhilarating as it had promised, with no hint of fluke or ill fortune and a cluster in contention approaching the furlong pole. That was before Ballydoyle's comeback kid Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) forged ahead late on to deny the TDN Rising Star Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in another stirring finish in which this race tends to specialise. We can now say with more conviction than before that the colt who had the world at his feet after last year's G1 Futurity Trophy was possibly robbed of Classic victory by his injury as he jumped back in during the opening day's feature of his country's biggest weekend. All memories of the heavy weather he had made of marking his return with success in The Curragh's G3 Royal Whip Aug. 13 melted away as the 7-2 shot fought off the ultra-game G1 Grand Prix de Paris hero to prevail by half a length. There was a further 1 1/4 lengths back to Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}) in third as the 3-year-olds dominated in the absence of Shadwell's giant shadow-caster.

Perhaps it is a date with Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) that now awaits Luxembourg, who was providing the Westerberg connection with its greatest day. “The plan was always the Guineas, the Derby, the Irish Derby and then a rest before this and then the Arc,” the ultimate target-trainer revealed as he basked in an astounding 11th Irish Champion for his team. “That was the dream and we felt if we could get him back then it would be three races for him–the Curragh, here and the Arc. We went to the Royal Whip when he was ready to do a piece of work, so that was a massive one–you don't usually send a horse to a group race with 20 to 30 per cent of improvement to come. When he did what he did there, we knew we had a chance.”

Luxembourg, who had dazzled with his sectionals on debut at Killarney in July and in The Curragh's G2 Beresford S. in September, had cut a different figure when less flashy in Doncaster's end-of-term examination but was nevertheless able to safeguard his unbeaten record in comfortable fashion. Stumbling leaving the stalls for the 2000 Guineas before it all unravelled on the Rowley Mile, he was still on the heels of the Godolphin pair at the death that day so it was cruel that the public was denied what would have been a clash to remember with Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) at Epsom. After that contemporary had run away with the blue riband, it was remarkable how quickly Ballydoyle's number one was cast from the story.

With his Royal Whip re-entry only a workmanlike one, he had plenty to prove here against a small but stellar cast who all had the jump on him as far as race-hardening goes. As it turned out, what his rivals both the same age and older had in hand in that regard was negated by the obvious class advantage that he possesses and which was only evident as he crossed the line. As expected, his stablemate Stone Age (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) set a demanding pace as he waited along with the French duo, detached just far enough that there was no slackening of the rope. With the 7-4 favourite Vadeni forced to go towards the inside approaching the furlong pole, it was clear that the Aga Khan's star colt was too far adrift from Luxembourg and Onesto's private argument which the Ballydoyle runner won with a decisive final thrust 50 yards out.

“Since the Royal Whip, he's had tough hard graft and has taken it with a smile on his face which is unusual,” O'Brien added. “He was very much on the back foot the minute he got injured, but we knew that what he did in the Guineas meant that he was really good and a little bit different. He is brave too, he had to take it all and he had to fight again today. This is for a lot of people, for Killian who rides him every day, Stephen who rides his lead horse, Derek who looks after him, Jamie who is in charge of him, Wayne who rides him in all his work and Ryan who gave him an incredible ride. We didn't think we'd get him to The Curragh, but we had to push for it and the team made it happen.”

Christophe Soumillon believed that Vadeni's level dipped slightly from the Jockey Club and Eclipse, “I was very confident throughout the race–he was travelling probably a bit keen but not over-racing, just a bit fresh,” he explained. “He gave a little blow as Mishriff came to my outside and then quickened quite well but I'm sure he was not at 100 per cent and the ground is not for him. It is a little bit loose on top and not like it was at Sandown or Chantilly. If I had been able to stay out there and follow Ryan I would have, but I could feel the horse give a little blow and I wanted to give him a bit longer to recover. You still have to respect him, there are big races coming for him and the French Derby formline is there with Onesto running so well. I would probably have finished a bit closer with a clearer run, but I'm sure the winner is a great horse as well.”

Jean-Claude Rouget revealed that there will be no meeting with the winner and Baaeed in Paris for Vadeni. “He was having to do a slalom, like in skiing, so it was quite a good run,” he said. “He was in front of Mishriff like he was last time and we can't win every race. I think he was a bit unlucky, but I think the result is correct with a very strong pace in front. I don't know what the plan is, but not the Arc. Maybe he goes to Ascot [for the Oct. 15 G1 Qipco British Champion S.] if the ground is better.”

Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), who was an honest fourth without ever threatening, could be Breeders' Cup-bound according to Prince Faisal's racing manager Ted Voute. “Post-race, John Gosden would like to consider the Breeders' Cup Turf over a mile and a half,” he said. “Colin Keane felt the ground was drying and felt a bit dead, which he wasn't happy on. He finished well, considering. Prince Faisal has said that the Breeders' Cup wasn't out of the question, provided he comes out of the race well.”

Deep Impact’s Auguste Rodin Takes The Champions Juvenile

The vibes were strong about Ballydoyle's TDN Rising Star Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) ahead of Saturday's G2 KPMG Champions Juvenile S. at Leopardstown and they proved correct as the son of Rhododendron (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) got his stable off to a strong start to Irish Champions Weekend. Fine-tuned since breaking his maiden over seven furlongs at Naas July 2, the 11-10 favourite was settled by Ryan Moore behind the leading pair early which included his stablemate and fellow TDN Rising Star Tower Of London (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Sent to the front with 1 1/2 furlongs of the mile trip remaining, the bay edged right with the smooth-travelling filly Caroline Street (No Nay Never) in attendance but ultimately had the answers to score by 1 1/2 lengths.

“He's a lovely horse and was a bit idle on ground that is probably a bit slow for him,” the winning rider said of the winner, who had looked unlucky when second on debut at The Curragh June 26. Aidan O'Brien had given the impression beforehand that Auguste Rodin has been sending out the right signals at Rosegreen and said, “He's just back off his break and will come forward plenty from it. He is a horse who probably doesn't want to be in front too long, but his mum was like that, she liked to be getting there late but that's a good thing as those horses tend to last longer. He always showed a lot of pace in his work and he's a good traveller, a lovely mover and will appreciate nice ground when he gets it.”

“He has a beautiful physique and a good nature and always went through his work very impressively,” he added. “To get a horse like him by Deep Impact out of a Galileo champion mare is incredible really. He could be a Futurity Trophy or a Dewhurst horse, he has plenty of class and quality and will probably sharpen up a lot from the race. We thought he could be the type of horse who could do both the Guineas and Derby, he could be a Derby horse that could start in the Guineas. He could get a mile and a half, but he's a mile, mile-and-a-quarter horse we thought.”

Of Tower Of London, who faded in midstraight and finished a disappointing last, O'Brien added, “At home he knew more than the other horse and ideally, we would have preferred to take our time a little bit more with the other horse but there was no pace. Something had to go and it probably didn't really suit him doing that.”

Pedigree Notes

Auguste Rodin, who becomes the 151st group winner for his legendary late sire, is so far the only known foal out of the leading racemare Rhododendron who was able to win a Lockinge at a mile and the Prix de l'Opera over 10 furlongs, as well as finish second to Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in the Oaks. Her dam is the outstanding producer Halfway To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who also captured a trio of top-level contests from a mile to a mile and a quarter including the Irish 1000 Guineas. Rhododendron's full-sister Magical (Ire) was a seven-times group 1 winner, with her conquests featuring the feature race on this card and Ascot's Champion S.

Halfway To Heaven is out of the triple group scorer and G1 July Cup runner-up Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), who is also responsible for the G3 Abernant S. and G3 Sandown Sprint S. winner Tickled Pink (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the G3 Summer S. winner Theann (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire).
