Savethelastdance Routs Cheshire Oaks Rivals

Aidan O'Brien trainee Savethelastdance (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}–Daddys Lil Darling, by Scat Daddy) shed maiden status with a game frontrunning display over 10 furlongs at Leopardstown last month and stormed to the head of ante-post betting lists for Epsom's G1 Oaks after unleashing a spectacular performance in Wednesday's Listed Weatherbys Digital Solutions Cheshire Oaks at Chester.

The 8-11 favourite's only moment of worry came at the break, when hampered as the gates opened, and she was bustled along early to retain contact with the main cluster. Inching forward inside the last half-mile, she powered to the front rounding the home turn and surged ever clear into another county in the straight, hitting the line with a scarcely believable 22-length margin in hand on There's The Door (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}). Ermesinde (Ire) (Golden Horn {GB}) ran on to finish 3 1/4 lengths further adrift in third. Savethelastdance's victory was a record-breaking eighth Robert Sangster Memorial Cup for O'Brien, a contest won in recent years by subsequent Oaks winners Light Shift (Kingmambo) and Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}).

“I was very impressed and you can only be impressed by what she's done there,” said Ryan Moore after annexing a sixth edition of the contest. “They kind of all gave up with a half-mile to go and she was just getting going, but she gave me a very good feel. She's probably given me as good a feel in this race as the ones I've ridden in it before. She stepped a little slow, but they went very hard early on and she just relaxed and followed them round. I thought I'd just make sure she knew what she had to do and she stretched all the way to the line and ran right through the line.”

Pedigree Notes
Savethelastdance is the first of three reported foals produced by GI American Oaks victrix Daddys Lil Darling (Scat Daddy), herself a half-sister to GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint hero Mongolian Saturday (Any Given Saturday). The March-foaled chestnut is a full-sister to the hitherto unraced 2-year-old colt Mr Hampstead and half to a weanling filly by Into Mischief. Daddys Lil Darling, of course, won infamy when sent over from the States by Ken McPeek to contest Enable's 2017 G1 Oaks and was scratched in a thunderstorm after unshipping Olivier Peslier in the preliminaries and bolting to the start.

TDN Rising Star Badge For Sea The Stars Filly

One of Newmarket's Spring talking horses, Oaks entry Infinite Cosmos (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}–Waila {GB}, by Notnowcato {GB}) duly opened her account with comfort in the 10-furlong Nyetimber Maiden Fillies' S. on QIPCO Guineas Friday to become her sire's 17th TDN Rising Star. Representing the longstanding Rothschild-Sir Michael Stoute connection, the relative of Sea The Stars' high-class Crystal Ocean (GB) had been second to the subsequent G3 Prix Penelope runner-up Sea Of Roses (GB) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) in a Doncaster maiden in October and started as the 8-11 favourite with Ryan Moore engaged to give connections the lowdown.

Racing prominently, the homebred had the measure of long-time leader Therapist (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}) passing two out and found her feet on the climb to the line to score by 4 1/4 lengths from Strong Impact (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), who denied Therapist by a neck. Stoute was keeping a lid on things, despite some bookmakers promoting her to favourite for the Epsom Classic. “I didn't think she was impressive there, only workmanlike, but she is still learning on the job,” he said. “We'll run her in a trial and make a decision after that, but I don't think she's going to be sparkly at this stage of her career–she needs to grow up and is taking time to learn. She may be impervious to ground conditions.”

Infinite Cosmos has some big shoes to fill, with her sire's impressive TDN Rising Star haul including Crystal Ocean himself, as well as the star fillies Emily Upjohn (GB) and Star Catcher (GB) and the G1 Deutsches Derby-winning sire Sea The Moon (Ger). She is the fourth foal out of Waila, who was also under Ryan Moore when recording a career-best 10-length success in the 12-furlong Listed Aphrodite S. on the July Course here 10 years ago and who was third in the G3 Lillie Langtry S.

Waila, who was sold to BBA Ireland for 550,000gns at the most recent Tatts December Sale, also has a yearling full-sister to the winner who was also purchased at that auction for 400,000gns by McKeever Bloodstock for Ballyhimikin as part of Southcourt Stud's partial dispersal. She is a daughter of Crystal Cavern (Be My Guest), a half to the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Rose Gypsy (GB) (Green Desert) whose daughter Crystal Star (GB) (Mark Of Esteem {Ire}) captured the Listed Radley S. and was second in the G3 Fred Darling S.

Before her death in 2015, Crystal Star proved a rich font of successful runners for Southcourt Stud, producing four black-type performers beginning with Crystal Capella (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) who captured two renewals of the G2 Pride S. as well as the G2 Princess Of Wales's S. and G3 Middleton S. Her next big-time personality was the GI Canadian International and G2 King Edward VII S. scorer Hillstar (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), before Crystal Ocean arrived on the scene with wins in the G1 Prince of Wales's S. and G2 Hardwicke S. and five other group races and five second placings at the highest level including two in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S.

Wootton Bassett’s River Tiber A New TDN Rising Star

Some TDN Rising Stars are marginal calls, but Ballydoyle's River Tiber (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}–Transcendence {Ire}, by Arcano {Ire}) entered the “no-brainer” category at Navan on Saturday with a 10-length blitz of his rivals in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden. Always travelling strongly for Ryan Moore tracking the leader in the five-furlong 164 yards contest won by fellow TDN Rising Star and stablemate Aesop's Fables (Ire) (No Nay Never) 12 months ago, the 5-6 favourite was let loose approaching two out and devoured the uphill climb to the line to leave the well-fancied Ken Condon-trained Zona Verde (Ire) (Calyx {GB}) in his wake.

“His homework has been strong at home and it is great that he brought the same to the track,” stable representative Chris Armstrong said. “He's a lovely horse and you love everything about him–athletic, physical and a good mind. He's one that could go to the winners' race in Naas or maybe something like the Marble Hill at the Curragh, and then hopefully on to Ascot. Something like the Coventry.”

“He's very exciting and another nice horse hopefully for Wootton Bassett,” Armstrong added. “It is unfortunate the rain coming today, but Navan is a lovely track to start them. Aidan has brought a lot of good horses here before–we start them here and they have always progressed plenty from it. It is a lovely track and always well-presented. I suppose his class got him through, he travelled very strongly and when Ryan asked him to lengthen and pick up, the response was there immediately.”

River Tiber, who was a 480,000gns Book 1 purchase, is the fourth TDN Rising Star for Wootton Bassett with the promising 3-year-old colt Padishakh (Fr) also in his armoury for this season. He is the second foal and first winner for the unraced dam, a daughter of the Swedish listed winner Cover Girl (Ire) (Common Grounds {GB}) who produced the Listed Harry Rosebery S. scorer and G2 Flying Childers S. and G3 Molecomb S.-placed Mister Manannan (Ire) (Desert Style {Ire}) and his Luther Burbank H.-winning and G3 Cornwallis S. and GIII Senorita S.-placed full-sister Shermeen (Ire).

Shermeen is responsible for a trio who represented Coolmore in some form in the G1 Phoenix S. and G2 Railway S. winner and G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. runner-up Sudirman (Henrythenavigator), the G3 Hampton Court S. runner-up Roman Empire (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and the latter's full-brother Star Of India (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who captured last year's Listed Dee S. and has gone on to add Australia's Listed Rosehill Gold Cup to his tally. Transcendence's yearling colt is by Mehmas (Ire).

First Winner For Ten Sovereigns At Dundalk

Coolmore's first-season sire Ten Sovereigns (Ire) (by No Nay Never) was the latest freshman off the blocks on Tuesday as the Ballydoyle newcomer Brighter (Fr) duelled to success in Dundalk's five-furlong Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden. Sent off the 13-8 second favourite behind the 11-8 choice Vanity Pays (GB) (Kodiac {GB}), the €110,000 Arqana Deauville October purchase who is a half to the listed scorer Charm Appeal (Fr) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}) was swiftly away under Ryan Moore and on the flanks of the leader Love Ya (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}). Left in front as that rival veered towards the far rail after turning for home, the bay battled tenaciously to ward off the Twomey runner Vanity Pays by a head, surviving an inquiry having brushed her inside the last furlong.
