Galileo’s Savethelastdance Leaves It Late In The Irish Oaks

It was a case of save it until the last minute as Savethelastdance (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}–Daddys Lil Darling, by Scat Daddy) left hearts in mouths en route to delivering Aidan O'Brien a record seventh G1 Juddmonte Irish Oaks at a rain-soaked Curragh on Saturday. Failing to match her 22-length Listed Cheshire Oaks success when second in the G1 Oaks in June, the 10-11 favourite enjoyed the perfect trip until the straight and looked flat-footed and beaten as the sponsors' TDN Rising Star Bluestocking (GB) (Camelot {GB}) swooped on the Ballydoyle pace-setter Library (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) approaching the furlong pole.

Rescuing a seemingly hopeless cause with Ryan Moore conjuring the surge that had taken her into clear daylight at Chester, she reeled in that pair inside the last 50 metres for an ultimately cosy half-length success. Bluestocking forged 1 3/4 lengths clear of the 80-1 outsider Library, who showed again what an advantage it is to be on the front end at this track.

“It's been a long time since she ran and we were treating this as her first run back for an autumn campaign,” O'Brien said. “Ryan gave her a brilliant ride. When she was in a little bit of trouble, he kept her coming forward without panicking and got her out then re-motivated her. She's a big relaxed mare and obviously the ground was way different than what she ran on the last time. It's a very difficult thing to motivate a horse on that type of ground, but she did answer for him.”

 

Savethelastdance had offered only a slight glimpse of her inherent piledriver finish when fifth over a mile at Thurles in October, but must have shown the right stuff at home to suggest she should be lining up for the 10-furlong Leopardstown maiden in early April that the stable have used for their Oaks aspirants in recent years. Belying odds of 20-1 there, she saw off all threats from the front to book her place in the Cheshire Oaks and with the perfect easy ground and race set-up there killed substandard opposition to become one of the shortest-priced favourites at Epsom in recent years.

On this evidence, her subsequent defeat by Soul Sister (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) on a surface riding on the fast side there makes sense as she clearly needs a distance of ground and is one of the stouter winners of this for some time. After tracking the front duo looking comfortable, she was under the pump turning for home and had received three smacks with Moore's whip by the time she reached the two pole.

Bluestocking got at least two lengths on her there and it looked all over bar the shouting, but then came the rampant closing sectionals which had so astounded at Chester but which, for whatever reason, are still not available in 2023 from Irish racing. That is a shame, as even visually it was clear that Savethelastdance had stormed through the final furlong in impressive fashion to not only catch the Juddmonte filly but beat her all ends up at the line.

“Obviously we know she stays very well and I'd say she's going to sharpen up a good bit from today,” O'Brien added. “You can bounce her out as forward as you want and I'd say she will find plenty and save plenty. She's a massive big masculine filly, she's unusual as she's a filly but she has a pair of horns on her head which is very unusual for a filly. She has a big, strong backside on her and a typical Galileo–when all the others are down on their knees that's when they kick in. She could go on to York for the fillies' race [the G1 Yorkshire Oaks], she could go to the Leger and the Arc on soft or heavy ground–all those races are open to her. It's very possible she will stay in training next year.”

Of Library, he added, “She ran over a mile-and-six last time and ran better than anyone thought, she was just getting into gear off the bend when her rhythm got broken and was probably better than her run. She's a very well-bred filly as well and another Galileo. Gavin [Ryan] gave her a lovely ride. Seamie [Heffernan] said Warm Heart wasn't acting on the ground from the time he jumped off and ground is probably the key to her.”

Also runner-up in the GI Kentucky Oaks, GI Ashland S., GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup and GI Alcibiades S. as well as bolting to the start of the 2017 Oaks as Olivier Peslier ejected, she is a half-sister to the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint and GIII Woodford S. winner Mongolian Saturday (Any Given Saturday), to the Luther Burbank H. scorer Victoryasecret (Victory Gallop) and to the dam of the GII Saratoga Special S.-placed Momos (Distorted Humor). A daughter of the stakes winner and GII San Clemente H. runner-up Miss Hot Salsa (Houston), Daddys Lil Darling's 2-year-old full-brother to Savethelastdance named Mr Hampstead was bought by Robson Aguiar for Amo Racing for $575,000 at the Keeneland September Sale. She also has a filly foal by Into Mischief and has been bred to Gun Runner.

Son Of Minding A New TDN Rising Star In Ireland

Aidan O'Brien had annexed six of the last 10 renewals of the Curragh's Juddmonte Irish EBF Maiden, among them 2013 winner Australia (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), and he claimed Saturday's latest edition with Henry Longfellow (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who collected a 'TDN Rising Star' rosette with a taking performance in the seven-furlong test.

The eventual winner was steadily away and raced in a close-up third initially and eased into second approaching halfway. Hitting the front soon after passing the quarter-mile marker, the well-backed 5-4 favourite was never seriously threatened thereafter and kept on powerfully under mild coaxing inside the final furlong to easily outpoint G2 Railway S. fifth Mythology (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) by 1 3/4 lengths.

“He's an exciting type of horse and I'm delighted with him,” the winning trainer said. “He's a Dubawi out of Minding and he looks a lovely horse. Minding handled that [soft] ground and he does bend his knee a bit, but he quickens. Ryan [Moore] said it was very easy, he didn't touch him with the stick and was very happy with him. He had been working well and he just came on the scene lately. For the last three weeks, week after week, he was working well.”

Henry Longfellow is the second of four foals and first runner produced by seven-time Group 1 heroine Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), herself a full-sister to G1 Oaks and GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf victrix Tuesday (Ire), G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Empress Josephine (Ire) and G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial winner Kissed By Angels (Ire). The January-foaled bay is full to a yearling filly and half to a weanling filly by Wootton Bassett (GB). Minding, herself a daughter of G1 Coronation S. and G1 Matron S. winner Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), was bred to Gun Runner this year.

Justify’s TDN Rising Star City Of Troy Emphatic In The Superlative

They may have missed out on the English Triple Crown this year, but Team Ballydoyle have another contender for that mythical pursuit in 2024 after TDN Rising Star City Of Troy (Justify–Together Forever {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) destroyed the opposition in Newmarket's G2 Superlative S. on Saturday. Allowed to stride to the fore by Ryan Moore with only Spanish Phoenix (Ire) (Phoenix Of Spain {Ire}) ahead, the heavily-supported 4-6 favourite took command three out and went through the gears from there to issue a punishing 6 1/2-length defeat to Haatem (Ire) (Phoenix Of Spain {Ire}), with another 3 1/4 lengths back to Oddyssey (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) in third.

“He's a very unusual and special horse,” Aidan O'Brien said of the winner, who had impressed with his attitude as well as his stride during his Curragh maiden win at the start of the month. “He has loads of speed and is happy to do whatever–he can go from the front or take a lead and can go with anything at home. He has that unbelievable rhythm and seems to just keep pushing it out and there doesn't seem to be any limit to his trip. He's a lovely-natured horse with that unusual demeanour and temperament. He has the stride and ability, speed and stamina all rolled into one.”

 

“Ryan said what happened at The Curragh had never happened to him before–he galloped out after the line down to the wall as if it wasn't there and I knew he'd go early today as there isn't too long a run to the pull-up here!,” O'Brien added. “Then going by the line he started to go again and was heading off and I thought 'oh no!' I wasn't going to run him when the rain came, as he's a real good-ground horse but the lads said to run and find out how he goes on it with the future in mind.”

“Dean [Gallagher] has done an unbelievable job with him at home and he looks an incredibly special horse. He's exactly what John [Magnier] wanted from Justify, a true Classic horse. The [G2] Futurity, [G1] National and [G1] Dewhurst are all open to him. We backed him up a little bit quick here because the race came up for him and Little Big Bear was coming. The experience of coming over will stand him in good stead and we always like to try and travel them at two. He's got loads of speed and will go any distance, so there are many roads open to him.”

Together Forever, who captured the G1 Fillies' Mile on the other course in town, was not a big mover during her Classic campaign and managed a fourth in the G1 Irish Oaks having trailed in seventh at Epsom. Her first three visits to War Front resulted in three black-type performers in Military Style, Absolute Ruler and King Of Athens with the former the most accomplished due to his success in the G3 Tyros S. Her fourth foal and first by Justify is the stable's high-class handicapper Bertinelli, the London Gold Cup winner who proved what talent he possesses when third under a stopping weight in Royal Ascot's ultra-competitive King George V S.

The second dam Green Room (Theatrical {Ire}) was out of a full-sister to the illustrious Al Bahathri and also produced Lord Shanakill (Speightstown) and Together Forever's full-sister Forever Together (Ire). The former was the winner of the G1 Prix Jean Prat, G2 Lennox S. and G2 Mill Reef S. and was also placed in the G1 Dewhurst S., G1 Prix Morny, G1 St James's Palace S. and G1 Lockinge S., while Forever Together was one of Ballydoyle's Oaks heroines. Together Forever also has a yearling filly by Uncle Mo and a filly foal by Dubawi (Ire).

Kingman’s TDN Rising Star Nostrum Back With A Bang In The Henry Cecil

Thursday's Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. at Newmarket looked every bit as strong as the card's group races and so it proved as Juddmonte's G3 Tattersalls S.-winning TDN Rising Star Nostrum (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Mirror Lake {GB}, by Dubai Destination) put his season on track with a performance that confirmed him as another elite runner for the Sir Michael Stoute stable. Last seen finishing third in the G1 Dewhurst S. on the Rowley Mile, the 11-10 favourite took Ryan Moore straight to the lead and one by one broke the hearts of his highly-regarded rivals en route to a three-length success in a fast time. Second was Embesto (GB) (Roaring Lion), who had 2 1/4 lengths to spare over the fellow Roger Varian-trained New Endeavour (Ire) (New Bay {GB}).

“We've never made any bones about the fact that we think this is a very good horse and it was a frustrating start to the season, but this will hopefully be the springboard for the rest of the season,” Juddmonte's European racing manager Barry Mahon said. “We probably could have been back for [Royal] Ascot, but it made more sense to wait and come here. This has been won by some good horses and it looked a deep renewal and a pretty tight race, so the way he went away from them he has to be a top-class horse. He's in everything, so we'll see how he comes out of it but hopefully it'll be sooner rather than later that he'll be back in group one company. This is a very special race for the Abdullah family to win and it makes it a poignant moment today.”

 

With fellow TDN Rising Stars Mostabshir (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Imperial Emperor (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) disappointing but well-beaten here, Nostrum's performance suggests a tilt at Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) et al in the Sussex is a live topic for conversation. Sir Michael Stoute was not dismissing the prospect immediately post-race. “He will tell us if he is ready to go back into group one company, but on today's evidence you would think he is,” he said, before adding, “We might get windy closer to the time!”

“He knocked a hind leg and needed a little time to get the infection out and to get moving again, but had been working very well,” Stoute explained. “He had been off for nine months and it looked a competitive field, so we weren't confident of winning but he was most impressive and I'm thrilled with him. We could go a mile and a quarter when we want, so we have just got to think about it. His two-year-old career was brimmed full of promise. Things didn't go right in the Dewhurst and he has come here today and won impressively. We can only be very happy, as he is a nice progressive horse.”

Roger Varian trained the second and third Embesto and New Endeavour and said, “Credit to the winner, he must be a very good horse because I think Embesto is very good. We had a lovely toe into the race and we couldn't run him down, but I'm very pleased with both horses and I think both have nice futures. Embesto is a pretty smart horse and he might be ready to step up to ten furlongs now. Let's see how they come out of it–they haven't won but they haven't lost much in defeat and I think the winner must be very good.”

Nostrum, whose success means that Kingman now has a dozen 3-year-old Northern Hemisphere stakes winners in 2023 and more than any other sire, is a half-brother to the G2 Ajax S. and G3 Gladness S. winner Imaging (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) who was also runner-up in the G1 C F Orr S. The dual listed scorer and G3 Select S. runner-up Mirror Lake, who also produced another Australian stakes winner in Titus (GB) (Dansili {GB}), hails from the family of the G3 Criterion S. scorer Vortex (GB) (Danehill) and his G3 Prix Minerve-winning full-sister Danefair (GB) who was in turn responsible for the sire Trade Fair (GB) (Zafonic) who also took the Criterion here. Also connected to the four-times grade I-winning Ventura (Chester House), her unraced 2-year-old filly by Frankel (GB) is named Imitate (GB).
