Star-Studded Line Up at Fasig Sunday

LEXINGTON, KY–Fasig-Tipton’s November Sale, known as the “Night of Stars,” will live up to its billing again when it kicks off Sunday at Newtown Paddocks with a sensational line-up of top race mares, broodmares and weanlings.

“We have a tremendous catalogue this year with fillies and mares coming off the racetrack, a tremendous group of in-foal mares and the best group of weanlings we’ve ever had,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “We are very, very pleased and enthusiastic about the quality of our 2020 catalogue.”

Top Breeders’ Cup contenders like champion and now two-time GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff heroine Monomoy Girl (Tapizar) (Hip 192), Got Stormy (Get Stormy) (Hip 168), narrow GI Breeders’ Cup F/M Turf runner-up Rushing Fall (More Than Ready) (Hip 205), Uni (GB) (More Than Ready) (Hip 228), Distaff runner-up Valiance (Tapit) (Hip 231) and Point of Honor (Curlin) (Hip 198) will be making the trip up Newtown Pike after their tilts in the World Championships at Keeneland Saturday afternoon. Champion Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute) (f2Hip 185), who was forced to miss the Distaff due to an injury, will also go through the ring Sunday.

It was announced late Saturday evening that Flawless (Mr. Greeley), the dam of Saturday’s GI Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and GI Kentucky Derby winner Authentic (Into Mischief), has been supplemented. Catalogued as Hip 288, she will be consigned by Bridie Harrison, agent for Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds. Flawless is in foal to Into Mischief on a Feb. 18 cover carrying a full sibling to Authentic. Flawless, a TDN Rising Star, hails from a deep female family of top producers, including Holiday Runner, the dam or granddam of Grade I winners Seventh Street, Reynaldothewizard, and American Gal.

“Flawless is an exciting late addition to our November Sale,” Browning said. “Authentic is just the fourth horse ever to win the Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic in the same year, and she is carrying his full sibling. To be able to add a mare of Flawless’s qualifications to our sale on the eve of the auction is unprecedented and provides buyers one of the more unique buying opportunities in recent memory.”

Some outstanding mares who have already made the transition into motherhood will be on offer at Fasig, such as Flirt (Kitten’s Joy) (Hip 164), the dam of GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf upsetter Fire at Will, who is carrying a foal by Lemon Drop Kid. Other top producers in the catalogue include Breeders’ Cup heroine Shared Account (Pleasantly Perfect) (Hip 207), who is carrying a full-sibling to 2019 Breeders’ Cup winner Sharing (Speightstown); Melody Lady (Unbridled’s Song) (Hip 183), who produced GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt S. victor Volatile (Violence); Paris Bikini (Bernardini) (Hip 196), who is responsible for GI CCA Oaks scorer Paris Lights (Curlin); and Cara Marie (Unbridled’s Song) (Hip 254), dam of GIII Pocahontas S. winner Girl Daddy (Uncle Mo).

Two other relatives of 2020 Breeders’ Cup winners are available Sunday in Voting Agreement (More Than Ready) (Hip 280), a half-sister to GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine Vequist (Nyquist), who sells as a broodmare prospect; and Indelible (Tiznow) (Hip 269), a half-sister to GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile victor Essential Quality (Tapit), who is in foal to Nyquist.

The first 159 hips of the 287-head catalogue are weanlings, including nine from the first crop of undefeated Triple Crown hero Justify (Scat Daddy). One of those Justify foals is a half-sister to MGISW sprinter Lord Nelson (Pulpit) (Hip 109). Another weanling likely to prove popular Sunday afternoon is an Into Mischief colt out of MGISP Miss Besilu (Medaglia d’Oro) (Hip 272).

“I think we are going to see quality sells or quality has maintained its market value for the most part at all levels in 2020,” said Browning. “Hopefully every horse we have in the catalogue is quality. We feel very good about the overall prospects coming into the sale, the response pre-sale from buyers, both domestically and internationally, has been very encouraging.”

Last year’s Fasig-Tipton November Sale was topped by 2019 GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff heroine Blue Prize (Arg) (Pure Prize), who summoned $5 million from Larry Best of OXO Equine. The top weanling was a $750,000 filly from the first crop of Horse of the Year Gun Runner. Overall, 128 horses changed hands for a gross of $68,011,000, an average of $531,336 and a median of $300,000.

Japanese and European buyers usually make a strong showing at the November sales. COVID-19 has made travel difficult for international buyers, but thanks to online bidding, virtual inspection videos and travel visas, the international contingent has adapted.

“I think arrangements have been made,” Browning said. “There were already Japanese buyers on the grounds looking at horses and they will participate online. There is traditionally a stronger Japanese participation at the November sales than September because these are the factories they want to buy. There has been a significant number of travel waivers for buyers from Europe.”

‘Very Courageous’ Audarya Runs Down Rushing Fall To Win Filly & Mare Turf

The French-bred mare Audarya (11-1) upset heavy American favorite Rushing Fall (5-2) to win Saturday's Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf by a neck, providing the second European victory of the 2020 World Championships. The 4-year-old daughter of Wootton Bassett set a course record of 1:52.72 for 1 3/8 miles over Keeneland's “good” turf course, eclipsing the previous record of 1:53.01 set on July 11, 2020 by Speedy Solution.

It was the first Breeders' Cup entrant for ecstatic trainer James Fanshawe, the former assistant to stalwart Sir Michael Stoute. He'd traveled to the Breeders' Cup once before with Stoute, in 1986.

“First of all thanks to all the team at home,” Fanshawe said. “The (traveling crew) has looked after her superbly since she's been here. She's done everything right since she's been here. I just can't believe it, some race to win. I'm just so thrilled. PC gave her a superb ride. Breeders Cup has looked after us amazingly.”

Owner Allison Swinburn was unable to attend the race, but Fanshawe said she'd be celebrating at home.

Audarya was ridden to victory by Pierre-Charles Boudot, taking the place of regular rider Ioritz Mendizabaz, who was unable to compete due to not passing a test for COVID-19. It was also Boudot's first win in the Breeders' Cup.

“She did it well and she was very courageous,” said Boudot, who shares an agent with Mendizabal.

Starship Jubilee appeared to stumble at the start of the Filly & Mare Turf, losing rider Florent Geroux. The mare was corralled by outriders on the backstretch, and Geroux escaped from the incident uninjured.

Mean Mary was the quickest off the blocks, streaking to the front along with Cayenne Pepper. Boudot crafted a beautiful trip from the 11-post in the 14-horse field, pushing Audarya through the pack to make it to the rail by the first turn. She settled beautifully in mid-pack down the backstretch, tracking fractions of :23.50 and :47.44, before pulling Boudot up into fifth position before the final turn.

“I said to Pierre-Charles to get a bit of cover because she might be a bit keen, but the way he got to the rail from stall 11 was just incredible,” Fanshawe said.

Rushing Fall had been tracking the pace from third and challenged Mean Mary around the turn, taking over near the sixteenth pole. Boudot tipped Audarya out toward the center of the course and began asking the filly for run. While she didn't show a big turn of foot, Audarya kept inching into Rushing Fall's lead and was able to wear down the favorite to win by a neck on the wire. Rushing Fall held second by a head in her final career start, while Harvey's Lil Goil checked in third. Lady Prancealot finished fourth and Civil Union was fifth.

The remaining order of finish was: Sistercharlie, Mean Mary, Nay Lady Nay, My Sister Nat, Cayenne Pepper, Peaceful, Mucho Unusual, and Terebellum.

Bred in France by S.A.R.L. Haras D'Ecouves, Audarya is out of the Green Tune mare Green Bananas. The filly commanded $147,475 at the 2017 Arqana yearling sale, and has compiled a record of six wins from nine starts overall with earnings of $1,289,046.

Brown’s Filly & Mare Turf Quartet: Sistercharlie ‘Really Coming Around,’ Rushing Fall ‘Drew Well’

Chad Brown will start an enviable quartet of starters in an attempt to win his fifth Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Keeneland this Saturday. Brown previously won with Zagora (2012), Dayatthespa (2014), Stephanie's Kitten (2015 at Keeneland) and Sistercharlie (2018). All four of his runners galloped a routine circuit of the Keeneland main track Thursday morning.

Sistercharlie once again leads the charge, being arguably the most accomplished of his runners and a seven-time G1 winner. She hopes to improve upon her third at 4-5 odds in last year's edition, while also improving from her two disappointing runs this season – thirds in both the Ballston Spa and Diana at Saratoga.

“I see her really coming around and is training as well as she has all year,” Brown said. “Her last three breezes in particular have been excellent. I think she's going to really appreciate the mile and three-sixteenths and having enough ground to get there. She drew well (in post two).

“I just think she was really rusty that first start back and had not run in a really long time,” Brown continued. “I probably undertrained her knowing that she's six and knowing in the back of your mind that she's had a lot of career breezes and I don't want to get her injured in the morning, so I probably undertrained her a little bit and that was fine, because I knew that first race back wasn't in any way a goal of ours. I think her second race she really ran well (post six) and it set her up for this.”

Rushing Fall, also a previous Breeders' Cup winner when taking the 2017 Juvenile Fillies Turf, is a six-time G1 winner who will be closing out her career by running the farthest she has attempted (9.5 furlongs) in the Filly & Mare Turf. A winner of 11 of 14 lifetime, she has won five of six over this turf course and three of her four attempts at nine furlongs, just short of this trip.

Brown: “I think Rushing Fall drew well and is another one where unfortunately this is it for her. She's had a nice career and hopefully she breaks well and has a nice trip from there. You do (worry about the distance), but we've been in this position before – Dayatthespa comes to mind and she had never tried a mile and a quarter – but sometimes the first time you try it is the best time you'll ever run at it. Frankel used to tell me that.”

My Sister Nat and Nay Lady Nay both exit the Flower Bowl Invitational at Belmont, finishing second and third behind Civil Union, who reopposes on Saturday. My Sister Nat is a half-sister to Sistercharlie with proven G1 form on both sides of the Atlantic, while Nay Lady Nay is the youngest of the quartet, at four years old, and has been incrementally stepping up in class in 2020. Both are graded winners who appear to be in top form, but must take on the tall task of beating their aforementioned stablemates and others at the G1 level.

“(My Sister Nat) may have to be used a bit early to get some sort of position (from post 13 of 14),” Brown said. “I think that's the key. It took her a while to acclimate, but she's coming around quickly and I have never seen her doing this well. On numbers, she's going to have to really take a jump forward to land in the winner's circle. She's very different from Sistercharlie. They might both come off the pace, but that's where it ends. They look different and I think Sistercharlie can get into gear quicker and has a bigger stronger better turn of foot, but My Sister Nat is trying to close the gap a little bit and get into the Grade 1 races now. She's turning six next season and it's quite possible she could run next year.

“(Nay Lady Nay) is going to have to tuck in early,” Brown continued. “She's a long shot as it is. At a mile and three-sixteenths it might be stretching it for her. I think her only chance to grab a piece of this is to tuck in off the break and kind of work her way through traffic during the course of the race. I do think there's a little more there. She just continues to grow and get stronger and does everything you like to see year to year. Some of these horses, they look the same as when they were babies, so I think there's a little more in the tank. Ultimately, I think she's best at a tick shorter than this, which is where we see her fastest numbers.”

Lucky 13? Brown Puts Breeders’ Cup Arsenal Through Final Rehearsals In New York

Trainer Chad Brown will be sending out a baker's dozen in pursuit of victories at the Nov. 6-7 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky. The four-time Eclipse Award-winning conditioner breezed the bulk of his Breeders' Cup contingent on Sunday morning at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

Rushing Fall, an aspirant for the Grade 1, $2 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf for e Five Thoroughbred Racing, went a half-mile in 50.69 seconds in company with Peter Brant's Sistercharlie [50.66] over a soft inner turf.

Rushing Fall, a 5-year-old bay mare by leading Breeders' Cup producing stallion More Than Ready, will look to become only the fifth horse to notch victories in two different Breeders' Cup races. During her juvenile campaign, Rushing Fall won the 2017 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar.

Rushing Fall is unbeaten this year in three starts, all at different tracks, while garnering triple-digit speed figures. Following a 2020 debut win in the Grade 3 Beaugay on June 3 at Belmont Park, she scored back-to-back Grade 1 wins in the Jenny Wiley on July 11 at Keeneland and the Diana on August 23 at Saratoga.

“She's been training well,” said e Five Thoroughbred Racing owner Bob Edwards. “I've been speaking with Chad quite a bit. She's a mare that works better with breaks, so we gave her a little freshening after the Diana. We know she loves Keeneland. I'm looking forward to the Breeders' Cup and hopefully she gets a good trip.”

Rushing Fall, who has earned $2,553,000 while boasting a 14-11-2-0 record, is scheduled to go through the sales ring at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale following the Breeders' Cup, where she will be consigned by Indian Creek.

“It's kind of bittersweet,” Edwards said. “Regardless of what happens, we're still proud of her. She's sound and she's training well. Coming back after last year's Keeneland race [fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 First Lady] she wasn't herself. We felt we had to race her one more year and it's all paid off.

“She's gotten more mature and confident in herself,” Edwards added. “She has a gorgeous blaze, great head, and great body. It's a test going mile and three-sixteenths since she's never gone that long before, but Chad is a phenomenal trainer and he's won this before.”

Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano has been aboard Rushing Fall in all of her starts and seeks a 13th Breeders' Cup victory in the Filly and Mare Turf.

Sistercharlie is in pursuit of a second triumph in the Filly Mare and Turf. The seven-time Grade 1 winner was third in the Grade 2 Ballston Spa and Grade 1 Diana, both at Saratoga and will attempt to join Ouija Board [2004, 2006] as the only horses to score non-consecutive wins in the Filly and Mare Turf. Brown's remaining Filly and Mare Turf hopefuls My Sister Nat and Nay Lady Nay, the second and third-place finishers last out in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl on October 10 at Belmont, also worked a half-mile on the inner turf Sunday in company with Eliade and Digital Age, respectively.

Also on the work tab for Brown was Uni, the winner of last year's Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Mile, who went a half-mile in 50.60 in company with Domestic Spending. Uni seeks a repeat victory in the event coming off a second consecutive triumph in the Grade 1 First Lady on October 3 at Keeneland.

The four-time Grade 1 winning 6-year-old chestnut daughter of More Than Ready was third to stablemate Newspaperofrecord in the Grade 1 Just a Game on June 27 over the Widener turf at Belmont before an uncharacteristic seventh as the favorite in the Grade 1 Fourstardave over the Saratoga Mellon turf.

“Her last couple of works have shown that she's really starting to show her old self,” said Bradley Weisbord, who manages Uni on behalf of owners Michael Dubb, Head of Plains Partners, Robert LaPenta and Bethlehem Stables. “Going from five to six, some horses may take a few races to knock the rust off. She's got a major turn of foot and it looks like we're going to get firm ground for Saturday. She's won on many different surfaces, but firm turf is where she is best.”

Uni will attempt to become the sixth horse to notch back-to-back Mile victories following Miesque [1987-88], Lure [1993-94], Da Hoss [1996,98], Goldikova [2008-10] and Wise Dan [2012-13].

Digital Age completed his half-mile work in 51.25. Owned by Klaravich Stables, the Irish-bred son of Invincible Sprit won the Grade 1 Old Forester Bourbon on September 5 at Churchill Downs last out.

Peter Brant's Editor At Large [Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf], third in the Grade 2 Miss Grillo on October 4 at Belmont Park last out, worked a half-mile in 50.75 in company with Klaravich Stables' Public Sector [Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf], second in the Grade 2 Pilgrim on October 3 at Belmont Park, who was clocked in 50.69. Brown won the Juvenile Turf last year with Structor.

On the main track, Brown sent out Klaravich Stables' Complexity, winner of the Grade 2 Kelso last out, for a half-mile breeze in 49.21. The son of Maclean's Music, who won the Grade 1 Champagne at Belmont Park as a 2-year-old, has given first preference to the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile over the Sprint. Also for Brown and Klaravich, Reinvestment Risk went a half-mile in 49.04 seconds in preparation for the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, which Brown won with Good Magic in 2017. The son of first-crop sire Upstart was a recent second in the Grade 1 Champagne to likely Juvenile favorite Jackie's Warrior.

Peter Brant's Dunbar Road logged a five-furlong work in 1:00.60 for Brown. The winner of last year's Grade 1 Alabama at Saratoga is targeting the Grade 1, $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff, which she finished fifth in last year.
