Multiple Graded Stakes Winner Owendale Dies After Bout With Colic

Multiple graded stakes-winning millionaire Owendale has died after a bout with colic, trainer Brad Cox told bloodhorse.com on Wednesday.

The 5-year-old son of Into Mischief earned $1,538,435 on the track, with a record of six wins, five seconds, and four thirds from 23 career starts. He most recently finished fourth in the G2 Oaklawn Handicap on April 17.

Campaigned by Rupp Racing after commanding $200,000 as a yearling at the Keeneland September sale, Owendale earned Grade 1 placings when finishing third in the 2019 Preakness, second in the 2019 Clark, and third in the 2020 Clark. His graded stakes wins came in the G3 Lexington (2019), the G3 Ohio Derby (2019), and the G3 Oklahoma Derby (2019).

Bred by Stonestreet, Owendale is out of the unraced Bernardini mare Aspen Light, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Great Hunter.

By My Standards Joins Clark Probables Following Friday Work

Allied Racing Stable's multiple graded stakes winner By My Standards is probable to enter next Friday's $500,000 Grade 1 Clark presented by Norton Healthcare following a half-mile move in :49.40 Friday at Churchill Downs.

Also donning the Friday morning work tab was Rupp Racing's three-time Grade 3 winner Owendale who worked an easy half-mile in :49.20 for trainer Brad Cox.

On Friday morning, trainer Bret Calhoun reported via text that By My Standards, the recent eighth-place runner in the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic, would likely be his lone entrant to the 1 1/8-mile race.

The Clark is the centerpiece of a fantastic Thanksgiving week of racing beneath the Twin Spires. Inaugurated in 1875, the Clark will be the featured race on the Friday program at Churchill Downs. Entries will be taken Sunday. The likely entrants to the race include Bodexpress, By My Standards, Code of Honor, In Love (BRZ) and Plus Que Parfait. Coastal Defense and Mr. Freeze are possible to enter the race, according to trainer Dale Romans.

One day prior on Thanksgiving will be the 105th running of the $200,000 Falls City (GII) for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles. Entries for Thursday's card will be drawn Saturday.

On Saturday, Nov. 28, the card will feature all 2-year-olds races for “Stars of Tomorrow II.” The headlining races will be the 94th running of the $200,000 G2 Kentucky Jockey Club and its counterpart for fillies, the $200,000 G2 Golden Rod.

The likely field for the Kentucky Jockey Club includes Arabian Prince (trainer Dallas Stewart), Inspector Frost (Brad Cox), King Fury (Kenny McPeek), Super Stock (Steve Asmussen) and Swill (Cox).

The likely field for the Golden Rod includes Coach (Cox), Lady Traveler (Dale Romans), Roc's Princess (Billy Gowan), Simply Ravishing (McPeek) and Travel Column (Cox).

Entries for Saturday's program will be drawn Wednesday.

Out of an abundance of caution, there will be no turf racing at Churchill Downs through the remainder of the meet because the course has not satisfactorily responded to this fall's climate. Grass racing will resume next spring when the conditions become more optimum. As a result, there will be no turf entries taken for races scheduled to be run on turf from Nov. 25-29. All scheduled turf races in the condition book during this time period will be transferred to the main track and entries taken for the same conditions will be dirt only. Additionally, the $100,000 G3 Cardinal and $100,000 G3 River City will be put on hiatus this year.

Cox Confident Owendale Will Take ‘Next Step Forward’ In Stephen Foster

Rupp Racing's multiple Grade III winner Owendale (by leading sire Into Mischief) will attempt to take a step forward to become one of the top older horses in the country in Saturday's $500,000 Stephen Foster (GII) at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

“He's only had one start this year (in the $100,000 Blame) but his victory was visually very impressive for us,” trainer Brad Cox said. “It's only one race but we're hoping he keeps showing that positive progression from a 3-year-old to an older 4-year-old. The Blame was a one-turn race, which is not his preferred distance and a distance he hasn't run at in several starts. The 1 1/8-mile distance in the Stephen Foster should definitely suit him better and we're confident he can take that next step forward to becoming one of the top handicap horses in the country.”

Saturday's Stephen Foster is the marquee race of the 2020 Spring Meet at Churchill Downs with the winner receiving an automatic berth to the Breeders' Cup Classic (GI) on Nov. 7 at Keeneland.

The Stephen Foster has had a strong influence on the Breeders' Cup Classic and Horse of the Year honors. Four horses used victories in the Stephen Foster as part of their résumés in Horse of the Year campaigns: Black Tie Affair (1991), Saint Liam (2005), Curlin (2008) and Gun Runner (2017). In addition, two runner-ups were crowned Horse of the Year: Mineshaft (2003) and Wise Dan (2012). Also, Awesome Again (1998) and Blame (2010) completed same-year Foster-Classic doubles. Fort Larned won the Classic in 2012, and won the Foster the following year prior to a fourth-place run in his bid for a second Classic win.

Owendale was made the 4-1 third choice on the morning line for Saturday's Stephen Foster and his regular pilot Florent Geroux will be in the irons. The Stephen Foster is carded as Race 10 of 11 with a post time of 5:47 p.m.
