Bumper Saturday For Juveniles at HQ and Beyond

Newmarket's three-day Cambridgeshire meeting's titular event, the annual nine-furlong cavalry charge boasting a purse of £200,000, is overshadowed by two Group 1 championships on a bumper Saturday of juvenile action at Headquarters and beyond.

First of the elite-level heats is the six-furlong G1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park S., with ante-post markets pointing to an effective match between Coolmore and Westerberg's Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never) and Rockcliffe Stud's homebred Trillium (GB) (No Nay Never). In reality, it is an open edition which also features G2 Lowther S. victrix Swingalong (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), G3 Round Tower S. winner Treasure Trove (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) and a Group 3-winning duo, Juliet Sierra (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) and Lezoo (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}), from the Ralph Beckett stable. Meditate forfeited her unblemished record when her standard was lowered by Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. on Irish Champions Weekend and this swift-draining surface offering more bounce will bolster her chances of redemption. August's G2 Debutante S. heroine also revisits the distance of Royal Ascot's G3 Albany S., over which she outshone 'TDN Rising Star' Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and Sydneyarms Chelsea (Ire) (Sioux Nation), but opposition is deep and she must draw from the well once more.

Trillium Nearing Full Bloom

Richard Hannon resident Trillium (GB) (No Nay Never) has displayed plenty of zip in all four prior starts and embraces a return to six furlongs after annexing Goodwood's G3 Molecomb and Doncaster's G2 Flying Childers over five. She shed maiden status in style when tackling a downhill six at the Sussex track in July and her trainer expects a reboot to suit the April-foaled bay.

“She held the track record for a matter of minutes [after the Molecomb],” he revealed. “Then, at Doncaster, she beat the filly [The Platinum Queen] who beat her track record. I won this in 2014 with Tiggy Wiggy and she had a lot of speed, but Trillium has a lot of scope and only gets going a furlong out. I've always thought she wants six furlongs and I'm very hopeful.”

Blackbeard To Plunder More Booty

Saturday's £275,000 G1 Juddmonte Middle Park S. is also blessed with quality and a field of eight will assemble for another dash across the final three-quarters of Newmarket's Rowley Mile. Coolmore and Westerberg's G3 Marble Hill and G2 Prix Robert Papin victor Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never) will bid to become the ninth colt this century to have garnered France's G1 Prix Morny en route to glory here, a list which includes former Ballydoyle luminary Johannesburg (Hennessy). The February-foaled bay, whose year-younger full-sister is catalogued as lot 93 on day one of Goffs' forthcoming Orby sale, renews rivalry with Amo Racing's ultra-consistent G2 July S. winner Persian Force (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), who ran second in the G1 Phoenix S. before occupying the same slot in the Morny.

“I'm going in there with a horse we know is good enough,” insisted the latter's trainer Richard Hannon. “He has lasted all year and he has proved himself at the top level. Blackbeard is a very good horse who probably beat us fair and square in France, but half a length is the sort of margin to have another go at him with. We have everything to gain and nothing to lose.”

Strength in depth is provided by Prix Morny third The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Godolphin's G3 Sirenia S. winner Mischief Magic (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), G2 Gimcrack S. runner-up Marshman (GB) (Harry Angel {Ire}) and impressive Yarmouth novice scorer Zoology (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}).

The Zousome Twosome

Widden Stud's antipodean sire sensation Zoustar (Aus) (Northern Meteor {Aus}) has hit the ground running with his first Northern Hemisphere crop, striking for 11 individual winners headed by Marc Chan and Andrew Rosen's G3 Princess Margaret S. victrix Lezoo (Ire). The €110,000 Arqana Breeze-Up graduate, whose lone defeat in four outings was a G2 Duchess of Cambridge second at the town's summer venue, takes her place alongside nine for the G1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park.

Qatar Racing's four-length debut winner Zoology (GB), who was a 90,000gns Tattersalls December foal and trainer James Ferguson's first juvenile scorer of the campaign, doubles up for the sire and flies the Southern Cross in the G1 Juddmonte Middle Park. Bold shows from either, or both, should cap a fine week for the Tweenhills operation which recently revealed the G1 Golden Rose S. and G1 Coolmore Stud S. hero is to shuttle this way for the 2023 breeding season.

Earning Your Wings

Opening HQ's seven-race programme, the one-mile G2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge S. has attracted a field of four, with the winner entitled to a fees-paid berth in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland in early November.

With three 'TDN Rising Stars', all subsequent multiple Group 1 winners, already in the race's hall of fame–Jukebox Jury (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and Best Of Days (GB) (Azamour {Ire})–Godolphin's Flying Honours (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) qualifies as the only contender attempting to become a fourth such victor. He carries the best form into this test and ratified a 9 1/2-length demolition at Sandown in July with another daylight exhibition in last month's Listed Stonehenge S. at Salisbury. Aidan O'Brien, on the lookout for a record-equalling eighth renewal, is represented by Roscommon maiden scorer Greenland (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}).

Getting Two Little Ducks In A Row

Of the many records Aidan O'Brien does not track, none matches his vice-like grip on Saturday's seven-runner G2 Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford S. at the Curragh, with the modern maestro poised on an astonishing 21 wins in the one-mile juvenile test. Azamour (Ire) (Night Shift) and Sea The Stars (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) are two of just four to have interrupted the sequence since Johan Cruyff (GB) (Danehill) set the ball rolling in 1996, that first win coming five years after the trainer's namesake and original Ballydoyle denizen, Vincent, claimed the last of a then-record 15 with El Prado (Ire) (Sadler's Wells).

In the quest for 22 overall and 12 straight, O'Brien has clipped his five-day entry of 21 down to two, Wayne Lordan taking the mount on this month's G3 Prix des Chenes second Adelaide River (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and Emmet McNamara aboard last month's landmark winner Continuous (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}).

Later on the Co. Kildare card is a €1,234,000 reincarnation of the Goffs Million, which appears at the mercy of Teme Valley Racing's G3 Tyros S. runner-up and Listed Churchill S. winner Hellsing (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) and Ballydoyle's lone nominee Hiawatha (Ire) (Camelot {GB}).

Sunday Cracker In Store

Sunday's European highlight is a mouthwatering edition of Cologne's G1 60th Preis von Europa, with seven declared for a 12-furlong cracker at the Weidenpescher venue.

Bidding to follow in the hoofprints of last year's champion Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}), 2022's star-studded cast includes this term's G1 Deutsches Derby and G1 Bayerisches Zuchtrennen hero Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), last season's Deutsches Derby first and second Sisfahan (Fr) (Isfahan {Ger}) and Alter Adler (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}), respectively, Godolphin's G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin victor Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and G1 Bayerisches Zuchtrennen runner-up Amazing Grace (Ger) (Protectionist {Ger}).

Sacred Moments

While Saturday sees the hosting of the signature race of Newmarket's three-day Cambridgeshire meeting, the card is mostly about the 2-year-olds with the venue staging its pair of six-furlong jewels in the G1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park S. and G1 Juddmonte Middle Park S. In the former, Ger Lyons will be hoping that his stable's current purple patch can continue with the sponsors' unbeaten Sacred Bridge (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) who looked to be moving still upwards in the G3 Round Tower S. at The Curragh Aug. 27. That form has taken a couple of knocks subsequently, so she will need to raise her game again to justify her current cramped odds but as a full-sister to Viadera (GB) she is about more than just precocity.

“I wouldn't change her for anything,” Lyons said ahead of the race that launched him onto a bigger stage via the exploits of Lightening Pearl (Ire) (Marju {Ire}) in 2011. “What other trainers are doing is their business and my job is to get this filly there on Saturday in good health and if she rocks up and does what she has been doing all summer then happy days. This is her sternest test, she's stepping into the big leagues now in Group 1 level and invariably they fail and that's not to be negative. In the Round Tower, I thought the way she did it in group company was visually spectacular and it was also fast ground, which I think is the key to her. She hasn't let me down yet. After the Round Tower, I don't think she's out of her depth.”

Primed to prolong Kirsten Rausing and Andrew Balding's season of seasons is Sandrine (GB) (Bobby's Kitten), whose G3 Albany S. win at Royal Ascot June 18 received a boost on Friday with the performances of Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) in the G2 Rockfel S. She again had that pair behind when denying Desert Dreamer (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in the July 9 G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. on this surface at the July festival before going down by a length to Zain Claudette (Ire) (No Nay Never) in York's G2 Lowther S. Aug. 19. Racing under a penalty there and giving away valuable ground at the start, the homebred comes into the rematch with confidence behind her. “She's done nothing wrong this year,” Balding commented. “It was probably too quick a test and the draw didn't work out as we'd have wanted at York. She doesn't have to carry a penalty in this and she seems in good form, so we're hoping she'll run well.”

Zain Claudette, who also nosed out Desert Dreamer in the G3 Princess Margaret Keeneland S. at Ascot July 24 prior to the Lowther, will be bidding to provide trainer Ismail Mohammed with a red-letter day and he said, “She has very good recovery and she is handling everything so well. It's the same fillies, it's only the Irish fillies that she hasn't beaten. In the end, we will see if she is the champion or not, but from my side I feel she is already a champion.”

Westerberg, Coolmore and Merribelle Stables's 'TDN Rising Star' Tenebrism (Caravaggio) has a tall task attempting to overcome a 181-day absence since her visually stunning debut success at Naas Mar. 28, but as the sole Ballydoyle representative warrants respect. “Obviously, things haven't been straightforward for her since then,” Ryan Moore said. “However, she's been doing things nicely at home and I'd be hopeful she'd run well but I do think it's a very strong Cheveley Park.” Another 'TDN Rising Star' Flotus (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) relished the switch to front-running tactics when winning the Aug. 30 Listed Ripon Champion Two Yrs Old Trophy and she is right in the mix on that form.

In the Middle Park, Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum's June 17 G2 Norfolk S. and Aug. 22 G1 Prix Morny hero Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) looks poised to continue his momentum with the stiff six certain to play to his strengths. Trainer Richard Fahey is confident. “Whatever beats him wins,” he said. “He's pretty smart and has a great mind. He does everything right at home and is easy to train. He goes fast easily which makes my job very easy in turn. I've got every piece of work into him that I needed to and feel he's still progressing. Like all the other good ones I've had, he's very straightforward.”

Perfect Power, who handled this good-to-firm ground when powering home at Royal Ascot and good-to-soft in the Morny at Deauville, may have one achilles heel according to his trainer. “My one concern for Saturday is the draw, I hate being in stall one on the straight course at Newmarket, it limits your options and things can happen away from you,” Fahey explained. “I just hope we're in the right place, because we have the right horse if we are.”

Peter Brant's 'TDN Rising Star' Dr Zempf (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) had his June 26 G2 Railway S. conqueror Go Bears Go (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) and the May 22 G3 Marble Hill S. winner Castle Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) behind when second to Ebro River (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) in the G1 Phoenix S. at The Curragh Aug. 8. Judged by the way Ebro River performed in the G1 National S., that may be strongest piece of six-furlong juvenile form to date and the Ger Lyons trainee looks to have abundant improvement as a strong stayer at the trip.

“His work has always been impressive, but we've always trained him with next year in mind,” Lyons said. “I'm happy going into the Middle Park–I'm not saying he'll win it, but he'll be competitive. He's always showed quality. I would much rather be going over seven furlongs with him, but we are erring on the side of weakness at the moment. Colin [Keane] has always said 'stick to six with him for the moment'. I think it is the six furlongs that has been getting him beat up to now. Colin said he would reverse the form of the Railway S. and he was right, but then we bumped into one in the Phoenix. The Dewhurst is not out of the question. We'll see what happens on Saturday–he's had a light season and I can't wait to see him over seven.”

Go Bears Go, who was also second in the Norfolk before his Railway win and Phoenix third, is looking to bring up a notable double for Amo Racing and David Loughnane following the success of the combination's Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in Friday's G2 Rockfel S. “He's not let us down yet, so it's all systems go,” Loughnane commented. “He was my first runner in a Group 1 in the Phoenix when he was third and he's my only one. The winner franked the form in the National S., so we'll be going confident that he's a Group 1 horse. He seems in a great place. We gave him a little break for a freshen-up after the Phoenix and I couldn't be happier with him at the moment.”

From Ballydoyle is Smith, Magnier, Tabor, Westerberg and Sikura's progressive HMS Endeavour (War Front), who has fast ground in his favour in a race his trainer has won with 25-1 and 10-1 shots in the last 10 years. Considering the depth of experience in pattern-race company that his rivals boast here, the son of Lady Eli (Divine Park) has to progress markedly on his latest success in a five-furlong conditions race on Dundalk's Polytrack Sept. 17. “This looks a very competitive race,” jockey Ryan Moore admitted. “HMS Endeavour has been progressing with each start, but this is a step up in class and he'll have to improve to be in the mix here.”

On a card where only the Cambridgeshire and the closing handicap are not for juveniles, Classic clues are in abundance with the G2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge S. seeing Mick and Janice Mariscotti's Masekela (Ire) (El Kabeir) tackle Godolphin's July Course debut winner Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's Aug. 18 G3 Acomb S. scorer Royal Patronage (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). Beaten a short head by Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in the G2 Superlative S. at the July festival July 10, Masekela has since denied Bayside Boy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) in the Listed Washington Singer S. also over seven furlongs at Newbury Aug. 14 and both pieces of form have been subsequently boosted.

Oisin Murphy's enthusiasm for the Kingsclere runner was obvious on Friday. “Masekela is the one I'm looking forward to most this weekend in the Royal Lodge,” he said. “I've loved him since the first time I saw him and although he's a horse for next year, hopefully we can get one more run out of him as a 2-year-old. All the signs have been good at home, if anything he's got quite lazy, but a mile will suit him well. Royal Patronage brings strong form into the race, he'll probably go forward again and hopefully Masekela can follow them along and show them how good he is.”

Having a line on Masekela through Native Trail, Charlie Appleby is happy to pitch in Coroebus, whose Aug. 13 win over this trip has also been boosted. “Coroebus won his maiden in a raw style, but did it well and has come on for the run,” he said. “We have been pleased with him going into this and feel that he is ready to test himself in pattern company.”

Royal Patronage looks certain to improve for an extra furlong following his dominating York success from the front and Harry Herbert said, “He was impressive last time at York, I don't think there was any fluke about that and he's now put together two very good performances. He's improving rapidly, so we're hopeful that he'll give everyone a big shout on Saturday. If he's come on the same amount as he has been showing in all of his races then you'd have to hope he'd be right up the sharp end–we love the horse and it's great to hear he has been working impressively.”

In between the Cheveley Park and the Middle Park, The Curragh stages the G2 Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford S. where the Westerberg-Coolmore-Ballydoyle alliance is represented by the July 14 Killarney conditions winner Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}). He beat the re-opposing Tuwaiq (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) in convincing fashion there and that rival has since added substance to the form by finishing runner-up in the Listed Churchill S. at Tipperary Aug. 6, while Joseph O'Brien saddles the five-length Galway maiden scorer Swan Bay (Ire) (Australia {GB}) for the Lloyd J Williams Syndicate and said, “He's a horse that we always hoped would be stakes class and we are looking forward to seeing how he fits into this company.”

Majestic To Bid For Rockfel Glory

Day two of Newmarket's Cambridgeshire Festival plays host to five black-type heats with the Unibet-sponsored G2 Rockfel S. and G2 Joel S. sharing top billing on the seven-race card. The former contest's honour roll features a swathe of subsequent Group 1 winners since the turn of the century, headed by Classic heroines Speciosa (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), Finsceal Beo (Ire) (Mr. Greeley) and Just The Judge (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}). However, the seven-furlong juvenile fillies' prize has never made its way to Kingsclere, and last month's G3 Sweet Solera S. victrix Majestic Glory (GB) (Frankel {GB}), acquired by Doreen Tabor from Gearoid Costelloe in the interim, bids to break that sequence for the Andrew Balding stable in an open renewal. The 350,000gns Tattersalls December foal will head postward as the likely favourite.

George Boughey is set to saddle G3 Prix Six Perfections winner Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}), who also ran third in the G2 Prix du Calvados, and Listed Empress Fillies' S. and Listed Winkfield S. third Cachet (Ire) (Time Test {GB}). The trainer has enjoyed a banner campaign with his juvenile band and has high hopes for both. “Oscula just got caught late on last time, but she got bumped into and that lit her up and she ran keen, which she's never done before,” he said. “I think she's up to this level and I think she'll run a massive race, but she's got to handle Newmarket. She wouldn't have done a huge amount of work on the track so that's a little bit new to her, but her style of racing should suit it. Cachet and Oscula both worked nicely on Tuesday morning. Cachet was slow out of the gate and unlucky in France. She jumps out fine at home so hopefully we'll tidy that up before this. I think you'll see a different Cachet as the race wasn't run to suit her in France, but she looks great now.”

Cachet's first-crop sire (by Dubawi {Ire}) gets two shots at the prize with G3 Dick Poole Fillies' S. winner Romantic Time (GB) (Time Test {GB}) seeking to push conditioner William Stone another rung up the ladder after achieving a career high in that Salisbury contest earlier in the month. Amo Racing's Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) has finished just off the board in two outings for David Loughnane since placing in both the G3 Albany S. and G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. for Ralph Beckett. She goes postward coming back from a close-up fourth in last month's G3 Prestige S. at Goodwood. “Hello You is improving with every run,” explained Loughnane. “She's starting to settle down as she's been overly keen on her last two starts and was arguably a bit unlucky in running. She's definitely up to this level and deserves to get a group win beside her name. She's been very consistent and has run some solid races so hopefully we'll have a good run.” Other contenders of note include the hitherto undefeated duo Jumbly (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}, who snagged wins at Leicester and Kempton for Roger Charlton, and John and Tanya Gunther's Girl On Film (Fr) (Dabirsim {Fr}), a Ralph Beckett trainee coming back off a seven-furlong maiden win at the town's Summer venue last month. “It's a big ask, but her homework indicates she's ready for it and we'll see what happens,” said Beckett. “She's a big, raw-boned filly and I'm very hopeful that it works out on Friday. If it doesn't, she'll be a better filly next year. I'm looking forward to it.”

Benbatl Seeks Joel Record

Godolphin's three-time top-level scorer Benbatl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) annexed the penultimate renewal of his home town's G2 Joel S. and, if successful this time around, will become the first dual winner of the one-mile contest. The Saeed bin Suroor-trained veteran globetrotter also ran third last year and came back off a 337-day break to be denied by pixels in last month's G2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood in his only subsequent outing. “He has done well since his last race and he's in good form,” said bin Suroor. “He ran a big race in the Celebration Mile after missing the break from the stalls. This has been his target since Goodwood and his last piece of work was very good. It's going to be a good race, but we are looking to see a big run from him.” His seven rivals include the Charlie Appleby-trained 3-year-old Master Of The Seas (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who garnered last term's G2 Superlative S. and this year's G3 Craven S., lining up off a short-head second over course and distance in May's G1 2000 Guineas. “Master Of The Seas was unfortunate to meet with a setback after the 2000 Guineas, but his preparation into this has gone well and we are very pleased with him,” revealed Appleby. “There will be improvement to come on whatever he does here as we have an eye on the Breeders' Cup or Champions Day afterwards.” Former Mike de Kock trainee and dual winner of South Africa's G1 Paddock S. Queen Supreme (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) adds flavour to an already spicy affair and makes her debut for the Andrew Balding team. “This is her first run since January, but she was a Grade 1 winner in South Africa when trained by Mike de Kock,” said rider Ryan Moore. “She would have had a tough trip over here and would have had to spend time in quarantine. She's running against two very good horses in Master Of The Seas and Benbatl so it's a tough ask, but we'll see how she goes.”

Albaflora A Late Bloomer?

Kirsten Rausing's Lanwades Stud nursery has enjoyed a season for the ages and is represented by homebred G1 Yorkshire Oaks and G2 Lillie Langtry S. placegetter Albaflora (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) in the G3 Princess Royal S. over 12 furlongs. The 4-year-old distaffer, who also ran fourth in this term's G1 Coronation Cup, will go postward as a likely warm order and faces a competitive cast of 10 in a sixth attempt to break her pattern-race duck. Elsewhere on the card, Charlie Appleby and Saeed bin Suroor join forces to launch a three-strong Godolphin assault on the one-mile Listed Rosemary S. with last year's G3 Prix Six Perfections second Wedding Dance (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) coming back off a 419-day sabbatical and representing the former. Dubai Love (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire}), who has had a wind procedure since earning minor prizes in this year's G2 Cape Verdi and G2 Balanchine at Meydan, returns for this distaffers' test off a 218-day break of her own. Her Saeed bin Suroor-trained stablemate Soft Whisper (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is another on the comeback trail after finishing lame in Meydan's Mar. 27 G2 UAE Derby and makes her first start since. Appleby's G2 Princess of Wales's S. third Star Safari (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) encountered soft ground for the first time when a close-up seventh in last month's G3 Prix de Reux at Deauville and is back on a sounder surface for the Listed Godolphin S. over 12 furlongs.

HQ Juvenile Contests Take Shape

Newmarket's week of bloodstock sales and racing builds to a crescendo on Saturday with a trio of Juddmonte-sponsored juvenile contests–the G1 Cheveley Park S., G1 Middle Park S. and G2 Royal Lodge S.–sitting alongside the Cambridgeshire meeting's titular event. The six-furlong Cheveley Park has attracted a 13-strong field, headed by the hitherto undefeated Ger Lyons trainee Sacred Bridge (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), who has drawn stall three, with last month's G2 Lowther S. exacta of Zain Claudette (Ire) (No Nay Never) and Sandrine (GB) (Bobby's Kitten) in one and two, respectively. Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum's G1 Prix Morny hero Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) is the one to beat in the 10-runner Middle Park and has drawn the one hole while Mick and Janice Mariscotti's Masekela (Ire) (El Kabeir) will be up, up and away from stall five in the seven-runner Royal Lodge.
